I am wondering what to get Nora for Christmas. She will be 2 in March.

She loves coloring and painting, so I am thinking I might get her one of those little kid easels with lots of crayons, paints, markers, stickers and such.

She has wooden blocks, lots of stuffed animals and dollies. The only other thing I was thinking of it getting her a play kitchen, but I think she is still a bit young for that.

Any recommendations?

For my grand daughter and some neices and nephews that are toddler up to 2nd grade age I am making crayon rolls....little mats with pockets inside (sort of like knitting needle rolls) that are in cute quilting fabrics that roll up and tie, together with sketch pads (or color books for the littles) and small tote bags to match. Good for boys and girls both.

Alee!! If there is one thing I've learned from my kids it's that they do not play with things as they are advertised! I got the kids a play kitchen 2 years ago when Aria was 3 and she uses it and loves it but MUCH prefers carting all the play food all over the house and dumping it! I swear...they love loading it up in a picnic basket and pouring it out in a huge heap and making things in the 'air' right then and there. I don't know how Nora is, but Rianna, who will be 2 in December is a complete mess when it comes to coloring or painting. Here's what I've taken to since she LOVES to do it. I have taken tempura paints and big paint brushes...assorted sizes that one might use to paint trim or walls etc...I get her all naked, throw her in the tub, squirt paints and let her have at. She is is hog heaven. Then I just shower the whole mess right down the drain! It is so much fun. The other thing I've learned from the kids about Christmas is that the gift itself is so secondary...it is the ripping into the present and tearing wrapping paper that they love. Last year I gave Rianna I think maybe 1 or 2 new gifts and the rest were things she hardly plays with but already had. I just wrapped them up and she LOVED every moment of it! Reo, who is 7, is just now beginning to get the idea that it is really the gift that is the important thing. Aria isn't quite there yet. For her, tearing into presents is way more of a thrill than the actual gift.

OH, the other thing I've done is I always have a huge roll of butcher paper..you can buy them at costco. I roll out a piece the length of a room and let the kids have at...This has been how I do wrapping paper for the past few years. VERY fun. I let them play with paint, glitter, glue, sequins, crayon, leaves, etc..etc.. It is good messy fun too!

That's my 2 cents.. much warm and laughter to you! ~julia

Thanks Julia! Those are great ideas! I let Nora color on the dining room floor with oil pastels because it washes up really easy and the floor is black, so even if it "stains" you can't tell! LOL

I am making my nephew (who will be 2 in April) a TeePee with some canvas fabric and some wooden broom sticks. It is light weight and can be set up and put away really easily.

Oh you are the coolest Aunt, Julie!! My kids would love that. I just throw a blanket over the table and that's their play thing.

Nora would play with the kitchen now Alee, no worries! I got one for Addy around that age, and even the boys loved it! She also got a washer and dryer that same Christmas, and let me tell you, all the clothes were clean that night! I couldn't believe how much fun they have had with that. Another idea, a stroller. She loved pushing her babies around. And a toy shopping cart. That was a blast for all 3 kids. She would set up the food from her kitchen and go shopping. Just like mom! lol ;)

My grandaughter loved to play "waitress" at that age and I got her pots and pans, dishes and an orderpad and pencil and made a little apron and she played like she was taking everyone's order and delivering their food alot. She LOVED that for a couple years.

When I was a preschool teacher I taught the 2 to 3 years olds. They loved playing in the kitchen. They also loved backpacks that they could put things in and pretend they were going somewhere. Dress up clothes would be another big hit. You could go to a thrift store and get child clothes in a larger size for her. I used to get silky full slips and nighties for Steph to dress up in. Also, I know that tutus are a big thing now. I bet you could find a pattern on the internet and make her a tutu. The tulle netting is very inexpensive. How cute would that be??

I second the stroller idea.

My nieces who just turned 3 are always pushing a stroller around.

I got Lela at easel about that time. It was 20 dollars at Ikea.

I do not think she is too young for a kitchen. I mean maybe a few months. But, it won't be long. Lela turned 2 in Sept, and she is in love with the kitchen. She loves taking cans in and out of the cabinets. So I'm sure Nora would too. (fake cans could be used in her little kitchen). Lela has liked playing with the cans in the kitchen for a while now. (at least since Nora's age). And she also likes playing with pots and pans (making noise).

HAHAH! Nora loves robbing the kitchen cupboards of their canned goods can carrying them around the house. I have found baked bean in the bathroom and tuna in the living room and canned corn all over the place (One of the reasons I realized I need to use up some of these things! LOL

Ok, I love these ideas too, but what about ideas for wild 2 year old boys? he loves to just run the house so anything that keeps his attention for even 15 minutes, my niece would appreciate. She has a new born too and I found a pattern for a crocheted duck. It was so fun! Didn't get the wings quite right, but he'll never know.

LOL Alee! What do you think I run here, a slave camp?!? haha No it's a child size, and it has an ironing board too. I'm serious, that Christmas at my Mom's Addy and Camron washed all the socks and small stuff. You can put things in the little whole and there is a handle so you can 'spin' the clothes.
Even now sometimes. I will find clothes stuffed in the washer and dryer!

And yes, Addy loves bags and purses. She puts everything in them. She's always lugging a bag around full of her treasures. Dress up clothes would be lots of fun too. Play shoes, those little plastic ones.. she clumps around in her's all the time!

Laurie, My boys got tractors and trucks! They have a whole farm of equipment it seems. Also, when Camron was 2.. he got a stick horse and all 3 still play with it. That would give your nephew something to ride while he is running the house! Maybe a little tool set to keep him still? A little belt, hat and a few hand tools so he can fix mom's chairs and doors. Leap Frog makes magnet toys kids can play with. Mine have one with the letters and plays the ABC song. It's ok, but there are 27 pieces to it! And the song gets annoying after awhile! lol But there is one with farm animals that they match up. And when they put a duck and horse together, it says, 'You made a duck horse! That's silly!' They get a kick out of that!

Wow, you girls have it covered! I have a 2 1/2 yr old grand-daughter and everything I was to list is already here, although Gracie might be getting a little washer, dryer and ironing board set this year...I remember having those when I was little!

Alee - if she loves to take food out of the cabinets why not get her a little shopping cart?? Kids love to play with those.

lol Alee, I know me too, I find canned goods under her crib and all over the place! lol haha

Also another gift I want to get Lela, is one of those flapper ducks from Lemahn's. It's like a popcorn popper (the push toy), as you push it the leather feet on the duck twirls around, and "flaps" on the floor. I wish now we would of gotten that instead of the popcorn popper, but I must say Lela does love her popcorn popper! lol

Now a shopping cart, I've been thinking about that too! I think we will get her one! I wish I could find a wood one though instead of these plastic ones around here.

Make her some little flannel cloth napkins like the ones on my etsy store- Bella loves her and using them for all sorts of things. The other fun thing is baskets of plant dyed wool felt pieces, silks, shells and rocks. You can find them on A Child's Dream Come True online under doll making supplies or crafts.
Love- Rebekka

Alee, sometimes the simplest things are the presents that last the longest with the little ones. One of Johns sisters gave Jenna a stuffed kitty pillow. The ones that you get at the fabric store and sew to panels together. She was almost 2 at the time and she loved this pillow until about a year later her big brother who was jealous and cut the thing in two. She still remembers that pillow today and she is 21 years old. I always tried to find things that would give comfort to them as well as things that were learning tools. I even gave them easy read books such as the Dr Suess ones that I read to them until they could read them. Each kid is different. I did get them the art easel at Costco one Christmas and they both loved them to death.
