to be a morning person! Yesterday and today both I got up and milked at 6am. I am just not a morning person and set myself up even just to feed the kids and get them out the door by doing alot the night before. So this is a big adjustment to me. I have LOVED being all done with milking before the kids are done with breakfast! I plan to stay with this, since I can't work on days I DON"T milk early. (I sub at the elementary school) Oldest daughter has been helping me in the morning, since she is aleady doing her chores of feeding anyway and is out there. I tell you what though, this morning when she came in to tell me that it was 5:45 I felt like the Harrison Ford character in "Witness" when the old amish guy comes in each morning and says 4:30 - Time for milking!" (insert Amish accent) ugh! The world is a beautiful place in the early morning. Much like late at night, which I love too. I am really wanting to get in this habit. The hardest thing about it is that I am STILL a night owl too. haha

Uh oh Jenny! Those transitions are hard! Do you drink caffeine? My mom stops having any sort of caffeine by about 3-4 pm because she has found that it affects her sleep otherwise. Hopefully you can get adjusted to the new schedule soon!

I have always been a morning person I love the quiet of the house and the warmth and have time for the stuff I do. Then every body gets up and i'm ready to do what I can for them. I don't stay up late maybe 10 or so but love love love the morning.

Oh Auny Jenny, I am SO with you!. I wish I could get up, but when the morning comes the bed feels so good & I roll over & fall right back asleep. Hubby gets up at 3:30 & never even hits the snooze. When he gets up, I just look up at him & wonder how he does it, then roll over & conk out. But I agree, those few times that I have gotten up, it always feels great to start the day earlier. You are motivating me(a little anyway; but talk to me in a few days & we'll see) |

I hear you, Jenny! I'm neither a morning or night person, though....I just like to sleep. ;) I'm up milking before the sun, though, which is interesting sometimes because we don't have any lights out where I milk. ;) If I don't get it done before the kids are up, then it won't get done or the kids are late for school because I fall so far behind. Good luck getting adjusted!

Jenny I am one of those that would rather stay up till the early morning then drag myself out of bed. The movie reference was perfect - I thought I was the only one who thought of that when she had to get up. I talked myself out of purchasing a milk goat again this year because my hands just can not take the early morning cold and then expect them to spin later on. Now if I had a heated barn I would be right in there with you - that is my excuse. Good luck on the new habit - I will be thinking of you and dreaming of Harrison...

Jenny, Good luck! I am a night owl all the way! I am usually up until at least 11:30! The only problem is that I have to get up at 6:00am to get my son ready for school! I do enjoy the mornings, but as Lisa said it's hard to get out of a warm bed!

Do a google search on "circadian rhythm". Changing your sleeping patterns are not as easy as you think and in some cases, beyond your control. |

I am so with you!! I stay up late and can sleep until 10. But I have too many things to do and also need to get up early and get going. Although not as early as you. Yes, it's after 2 AM and here I am. I went to bed but was too excited about all the election stuff. Couldn't sleep so just got up until I'm sleep. But I do have the alarm set!

I have even more reason to be on this schedule now..just got a call from the school about a possible job for me. It would be part time (mornings 8:30 to noon) doing reading tutoring with kids from all the grades. It pays pretty well and would be a regular paycheck..which we could really use! Being there at 8:30 means I would HAVE to be up early so this would be the ONLY way I could take that job. And I think I will put in for it. I don't know how much competition there will be for the job...if I don't get it that would be okay..I can still sub...but it would be nice for sure! Reading is my favorite thing and it would be fun to be there with regular hours each day. I would be working with gals I know very well and like alot..in fact one of them just called to tell me about the job! I did day 3 of 6 am milking today..it is no easier to get up but easier to get going. I fell asleep in the recliner knitting last night at about 11pm..very early for me so I guess after stumbling to bed at 2am when I woke up in the chair I got more sleep than normal..haha. I am sure glad I am not the only night owl. I don't see that changing...just need to get a nap when I can I guess. I have NEVER been a good sleeper..but I am not as young as I once was!

Well, at least you got more sleep! I went to bed earlier than usual last night even though I didn't feel fall asleep sleepy like I normally wait to feel. I was surprised at how fast I fell asleep. I am going to try to be in bed that early again tonight.
My ideal situation would be waking up naturally and rested before Nora wakes me up in the mornings. :)

Around here we sleep when and where we can - I never worry if I fall a sleep on the couch, in a chair, on the floor, the only time I worry is if I am in the bath tub. Since I do not drive much I don't worry about that.... I have learned to even sleep on hay bales and snuggled in a corner of a kidding jug with the dog and goats. Sleep is best when and where ever you can get it.

I hear ya sister! That's why I don't think I could have dairy animals. I have never been a morning person. Once I get up and get some coffee in me I'm ok, it's just getting up out of my comfy bed! And the colder days don't make it any better! My husband gets up @ 4:30 to go to work and I haven't even rolled over yet! He keeps asking when I'm gonna get up and fix his breakfast for him! So I understand your pain! lol

The great thing about dairy animals is that you can to some degree adjust when you are milking. If you have the ability to milk every day at the 8's (8am, 8pm) then that usually works. :D That is what we did with the dairy goats at that horse ranch.

Oh ladies, it's good to hear there are so many night owls like myself. I also feel great once I get into an early morning routine but it never lasts long and I'm back to the 11 or later bedtime and sleep the morning away. Aunt Jenny, I hope you get used to the early morning hours. Good luck with the job hunt, sounds like a good fit for you.

I agree with Alee..you can certainly adjust the dairy animals to your own schedule. I always milked much later..as long as you milk 12 hours apart it works fine. Even if you milked at noon and midnight the animals wouldn't care if that is how you ALWAYS did it. I just NEED to do the early thing now. I don't know that I will ever be truly used to it..but I am still doing it each morning.

I hate to admit it..I really like getting up early. Usually by 6 am. I do sometimes take a 1/2 hour nap in the afternoon about 3p & I am always ready for bed by 10pm. It is so quiet & peaceful outside at that morning hour. I look out my window and watch the sun come up. Looking for deer that might be hanging around the pond. It was especially pretty when it snowed yesterday. It is just wonderful not having to go to Work. I am Retired now.. no schedules but morning coffee sure tastes good at 6Am.

Morning is my favorite time of day. I get up early and do all the milking and feeding (after a cup of coffee) and then I can rest a while before I start the "people" day. I have always done the animals first. But love mornings!
How's the calf? And how much milk are you getting now?

We are getting about 6 to 7 gallons a day over what the calf drinks...that will go down (the amount WE get to keep) as he gets bigger..but he will go to his new home at about 2 or 3 weeks old. We can start drinking the milk on Saturday...it will be cleared of colostrum by then..I can hardly wait! The calf is doing just great...he runs and plays and jumps. I really need to get more pictures taken..he has grown alot already this week!

Aunt Jenny-
Do you have one of those coffee makers with a timer on it? I'm not kidding! Those things are NICE! We had one for a while and when I had to get up really early in the morning, it was a lifesaver!

I agree with you Alee., I program the coffe to brew at 5:45a every morning.. If i happen to sleep later ( not often) the pot remains hot for 2 hours & then shuts off.. I also grind my own beans so they are fresh.... French roast. Our daughter works at a coffee roaster in Monroe Wa so we get plenty free coffee for Birthdays,Fathers day & Christmas besides when ever we go visit. She is getting married in June so no doubt we get more then. She sends us 10 lb bags. Its wonderful to get. I put the beans in 2 LB airtight bags that I shrink wrap.. They last a long time.
