Hey Gurlz,

I have a huge favor to ask. My sis is a marketing consultant and has a client (Rika) who lives in South Africa. Rika's brother, Willem, is mentally challenged and has just been diagnosed with Lukemia. Because of his situation he does not get out much and therefore has little contact with people and no friends. According to Rika, Willem LOVES to get mail and walks to the mail box every day in hopes that there might be something for him.

So, here's my favor - can you send Willem some good ole homespun farmgirl cheer? Doesn't matter what it is - a card, letter, pic of animals or your farm, homemade dodad, anything. According to Rika he would love it all. I'm not certain, but from the email Rika sent my sis it sounds like Willem has the mentality of a child, even though he is 41. So maybe your kids can help. This would be a great community service type project for our homeschool families or 4-H Clubs.

Anyway, that's my favor. If you're interested, Willems address is:

Willem Theron
PO Box 745
Caledon
7230
South Africa

Postage is $1.89 for a card or letter.

Thanks Gurls,
Jenn

Would love to send him a card. I will get my 2 boys to send him one too. I will try to send them a week apart so he wont get them all at one time. Do they know how to read English? And do you know if there is anything you cant send. I know most places wont let you send pressed flowers or things like that?
Blessings, Karen

Hi Karen,

Yes, they do speak and read English. I don't know what restrictions there might be on things to send, but I'm seeing sis tomorrow and will ask.

Thanks,
Jenn

Will send a card too.

On another board I used to visit often I had asked the members if they would send a card to my mom. She had severe Dementia, never received any mail etc. SO they sent cards and she loved them. Also when she was in the hospital she received many cards and it made her feel special: they were HER friends :)

Thanks gurlz - Willem's mailbox will be overflowing with joy. I asked a friend who works with teens if they could do this as a communiity service project and he said yes. They're also going touse it as an opportunity to learn about South Africa. Most of these kids haven't been out of the county.

Hi gurlz,

Sorry I haven't responded before now, but it's been crazy busy at work and with the economy everyone is on pins and needles about possible layoffs. BUT, thank you thank you for being soooo generous. I'm sure Willem will be out of his mind excited to receive so many wonderful packages. The middle school kids in the youth or I work for will be sending him a package next week. It's interesting to talk with them 'cause they've researched the area Willem lives in, the other kids in his situation and will develop a kindof penpal thing for a group of mentally challenged kids. I'm surprised at how the kids are really getting into this - but glad to see it as well.

Thanks again, Jenn
