So excited that it's actually working. We built a bin out of pallets and baling wire, and I put a bunch of sticks on the bottom to keep it aerated, and I've been layering kitchen scraps, small twigs, maple seeds (we're in New England) and leaves ever since. I'm pleased to say that it's working.

Takes a real Farmgirl to get excited about finding a worm in the compost!! I love my compost and talk about it often. Then I get people to bring me stuff to put in it. Like I didn't have enough. My neighbor works at a wine shop and told him that I heard dumping wine in the compost will speed up the process. He brings me the few bottles that have gone bad or for some reason can't sell.

We started with pallets and bailing wire. But found that the pallets decomposed faster than the compost. We now use cement blocks. Cost a lot but won't ever have to be replaced.

Congratulations! How exciting. I share in your excitement of finding a worm. I started a compost pile this spring and was so happy to see it is working.

I know, it's like magic. You don't really believe it will work until you see it working. Now that the weather is getting cold, the heat coming off of it is almost shocking.
