I have been out of touch for seems like forever. DH and I have been on a big cowboy adventure. We left the ranch in Idaho in the care of DD and her family, he is helping our granddaughters cowboy in Wyoming, and I am camp cook. Been using Dutch ovens, and camping in the sagebrush. Soon the cows will be trailed to their home pastures, about 70 miles overland. It is getting cold here in Wyoming

So glad to see you back here Kennie Lyn!! Lucky you to be having such an adventure!!!
I think being a camp cook would be fun..I love dutch oven cooking and don't get to do it very often. I am so glad you checked in with us!!! Hope to see you here alot!!

Thank you ladies for the warm back. DH and I have decided to sell our Idaho ranch. We won't give it away, so are being very patient in waiting for a buyer. But we decided we wanted to travel while we still young enough to do the things we wanted to do. We have grandchildren here in Wyoming that we didn't know very well, so we have spent the summer with them. Our teenaged granddaughters are taking care of 600 cows for the summer, so we are volunteer labor for them. Most of the summer we camped out in the sagebrush sleeping in our 16 foot gooseneck stock trailer. We had an air mattress in the nose of the trailer under our sleeping bags. Our grandson slept on a cot and we used the top of our big dog box as a kitchen counter. The rest of the family slept on top of an aluminum horsetrailer, to keep out of the snakes and bugs. But it does rain in Wyoming in summer. It doesn't much in Idaho, but it does over here, and when it rains it pours. So after having everything wet a couple of times, we bought a horse trailer with an enclosed tack compartment, and we sleep in that. Our SiL built a cowboy kitchen. The fire racks for griddles, bean pots, and dutch ovens, and a chuck box that fits on the outside of the horse trailer. They remodeled the storage compartments on the outside of the horse trailer into a pantry box and an insulated cooler box, a door on each side of the chuck box. Cooking and preping outside is way better than inside our old horse trailer with a million flies. I have found that it is easier to keep a fire going in a pouring down rain, than in a 40 mile an hour wind. We have had the time of our life. The girls, their dad, and DH ride almost all of everyday. DH's horse had gotten tough and learned all about prickly pears. Our old dog is just about wore out everyday, but is ready to go every morning. My little dog, a Jack Russell, has had to be watched very carful. There are big rattlesnakes here, and golden eagles and coyotes and every other thing. She has learned about prickly pear. She lookes so cute running thru the sagebrush chasing rabbits bigger than she is. She comes to a bunch of prickly pear, and tucks her little front legs under and sails over the top of the cactus. I told our
GS when he was here that not everyone gets to live like this and he should appreciate what he got to do this summer. Now he is in Idaho, and is ready to come back and do some more riding and roping with his cousins.
Wyoming is a beautiful state. When we aren't at cow camp we have traveled around looking at stuff. We have been from Jackson Hole to Sheridan to Cheyenne. I am thinking I might be able to get used to this wind.

My in-laws live in Laramie...you ain't a kidding about the wind there, girl. The thing that shocks me is that it blows in winter. Here where we live in Washington we have terrible winds all year EXCEPT winter. I don't know if I could do that wind chill.
But it's beautiful and sounds like you have a great life and lots of adventures. Email me about your ranch, will ya? Thanks. Acreage, amenities etc.

What a wonderful adventure.
When i was little I always wanted to be a chuck wagon cook. There was an old chuck wagon in a local museum and it looked like magic to me. What a wonderful way to connect with your grandchildren, and it sounds like juist the beginning of many fine adventures. Welcome, from Maine. It will be such a treat to hear more from you....

Hey Kennie! Now I just get to meet you here and find out you only live just over the mountain (pretty much) from me and you're going to move away! Sounds like you're having a great time over there in WY, though.

Thanks Ladies. Lisa we are neighbors, our Idaho ranch is on Squaw Butte, just north of Emmett. We probably know some of the same people.
Jami, you can look up the realtors website on the ranch. It is knipeland.com. Click on Idaho ranches for sale. It is Westfork Ranch. There are lots of pretty pictures.
Dutch oven cooking is fun, I am not the most creative cook, so it keeps me thinking trying to come up with different things to cook, with a limited list of ingredients. One of the ovens we have been using is over 100 years old. It is nicer than the 20 year old ovens I bought new.
