I grew up in West Virginia. There, pawpaws grew wild. And it seems everyone knew what they were. Here in South Carolina, no one has ever heard of them. They are a mushy fruit that grows on a tree and tastes similar to a banana. I was just wondering if you gals across the US have heard of them.

i recall the song... ".... way down yonder in the pawpaw patch..." (thats all i can remember)
but i've never actually seen one, much less tasted one...
never thought they were an actual thing/fruit.

Becky, yes we have them going wild here too. Although it's been years since I've had one.
Alison, I remember singing that one in school. Something like, 'where oh where is pretty little Elsie' and 'then picking up paw paws, putting them in your pocket.' Wow, it's been a long time since I've heard that song.

I used to be a pretty serious cyclist(about 40 lbs ago), & my boyfriend at the time was also a cyclist. He could spot a paw paw tree on our rides in places I couldn't believe. THey were a GREAT pick me up ride food, loaded with carbs. I loved them, but the birds usually get them right as they are getting ripe. I keep my eyes out for those trees everywhere & if I see one, I am ON IT..searching for that creamy sweetness.. Yummy. |

I ordered a pair of them one year from Miller Nurseries. I've never eaten one but the description in the catalog made them sound so good. Unfortunately, I have a neighbor who doesn't like trees and was very unhappy about me planting them so close to their property line and all of the fruit trees I had planted that year "mysteriously" died. So, I have yet to order another pair until I decide on a good spot to plant them where they would be safe.

Alison, Elaine, Suzanne: Thank you for refreshing my memory. I had forgotten that song. I went to the sight and listened to the song. Brings back memories.
Lisa: My Grandmother loved them. Anytime someone found them growing, they would bring them to her.
Lisa: I would hate to think that someone would intention kill a tree. That's just evil!!
Alee: Not sure about where they will thrive. We would have to do some research on that subject. Maybe the companies that sell them could give you that information.

OK you guys, I have a paw paw update. I went to the Farmer's Market this morning, & a lady there had a whole basket of paw paws.. She GAVE them to me cause they were getting pretty ripe & they were smaller than the ones that she kept for her own use. I was beyond excited & put them in my car & went on to a quilt show. I came out about 20 minutes later, & my entire car smelled like the most wonderful combo of vanilla custard and a bakery. It was heavenly. I got home & began to work on them; I plan to freeze the pulp. Well, there are multiple seeds & the pulp is hard to work with(of course most of mine were pretty ripe) The only time I have eaten them has been in the wild & we always just put the seeds in our mouth & sucked the pulp off.. So I lost a bunch of pulp to the seeds.. But believe me, I am not complaining. This fruit has an amazing smell of vanilla custard, & tastes like a combo of vanilla, mango & banana.
Here is a pic of the fruit that I got, whole & cut open.  
I have a multitude of seeds & will try to plant some, & if anyone wants some, email me your addy & I will mail out. I also found this online, that gives some detail as to what this plant requires. http://www.crfg.org/pubs/ff/pawpaw.html
Anyway, I am in Paw Paw heaven for the time being, & my kitchen smells heavenly(my goats loved the skins too)

We have them in Ohio and also here in NC
They prefer wooded shady areas.
We never have been able to taste any of the fruits though, too many creatures discover them before we do.
I bet the smell IS good! |

OOO! I would love to try growing one! It can be a house plant until I have a spot that it might survive! Could one of you send me seeds? I would greatly appreciate it!
Also maybe if they grow in your area, you could harvest them and dry them like banana chips! I would buy a bag just to try them!

They transplanted well, at about 8" tall and the one is 4 foot tall now. The 2nd one wasn't doing well so I moved it a second time and it is now happier. They are planted in a semi-shade on the edge of the hardwood forest 40 foot from my front door. I do look forward to their fruit.
