On page 88 of the next issue of MaryJanesFarm (Dec/Jan 2009), there's a super clever DIY apron-to-go kit that is just itching for a new home. Since we don't have to wait until the magazine comes out to start scouting its new home (due out in maybe 2-3 weeks), post here (as many times as you'd like). MaryJane will put all your names in a hat (multiple times if you post multiple times) and let Stella Jane draw the winner. The winner will receive the apron-to-go kit pictured on page 88 in time for some holiday girlfriend gift giving. Trust me, it's beyond adorable.
OK, so this is what sometimes happens when I try to think and type before my cup of coffee... I left out MY most favorite part. In order to have your names in the hat, you need to tell what "farmgirl plowing thru" means to you.........
Either a time when you had to "Plow thru" or a time when a girlfriend had to "plow thru".. just a little about your farmgirl experiences with "Plowing Thru", let's have fun with it……….

For me, "Plowing thru" has been a life long thing. My dreams for my life have always been bigger then my capabilities. I some times feel like I have had to "play the game" with 1/2 a deck. My love for writing was coupled with a sever case of Dyslexia, My love of people paired with early events that made people scary to me and so on. But I love the visual of "Plowing thru", breaking new ground, preparing the soil for all kinds of possibilities, working through the weeds and "hard ground" to get the "harvest" you want. There is something to be said for taking the "plow into your own hands" and carving out the life you want to live.

My last go round with the plow..... right now I am trying to plow thru bad food. I am so frusterated that raw milk and better food sources can be found on the west coast. I am trying to plow thru the mind sets of fellow Ohioans that our food supply here, with all this pastuerization, homogenazation and whatever-zation, is BAD. I am tired of reading labels. Why should my food have a label? If I want a tomato, it better well be tomato! I just lost a good friend because of this issue and I am plowing thru that as well. But I count on getting "plowed out, under and with" everyday by my Mavens..... wink!!

I finally broke thru! Plowin' thru to me is my marriage, raising of children, and making do until I finally am getting the life and land of my dreams! I Love my husband, children, animals, and the new life I am starting as a true farmgirl!

Plowin' thru, for me, means to take action to give your family and yourself, the very best you can. I rather like the dichotomy of a simpler life being hard work. That said, gardening, raising chickens, canning, quilting, etc, are elevated to a higher place because we do them. It makes you feel as though you have accomplished something important and worthwhile. I like the phrase Plowin' Thru as a statement of what I do every day. Digging deeply inside of myself I find that I have what it takes to accomplish the tasks at hand. They may not always be in order, but they get done.

When I think of a farmgirl plowing through, my mind automatically goes back to my grandma. She was an amazing woman, and I do my best to model my behavior after hers. She was born in 1930 on a farm 25 miles south of Chadron, Nebraska (the middle of nowhere), and persevered through so many trials and tribulations. Just to name a few...During the depression, she was out in the veggie garden as much as possible (they were lucky enough to have a nice large area right next to their windmill to plant a garden), helping her mom. Those veggies are what got them and several neighbors through the depression. Grandma had Alopecia, and had lost ALL of her hair by the time she was 18. It did come back after about 6 months or so (this was an ongoing battle for her), and had a full head of hair when she met my grandpa. In 1954, she was almost 8 months along in her pregnancy when she found out the baby was no longer living. Shortly after my mom was born in 1955, Grandma found out she had ovarian cancer. She fought hard, and beat it temporarily. The cancer came back about 10 years later, and she fought it with everything she had. During this time, she also joined the 4H Extension Club, volunteered at school and church, and moved her ailing mother in with them to take care of. With everything that she had gone through, she was the most optimistic, generous and loving woman I've known, and always made each person in her life feel special. She was a very thrifty and crafty woman, always making us things, and she was green long before it became popular. She passed away when she was 58 (I was 9), and even as she laid on her couch during her last few days, she was concerned with making sure the rest of us were ok. She had completely planned her funeral a couple of months before so my grandpa, mom and uncle didn't have to stress over it.
For me, "Plowing thru" means to draw on my inner strength to get through the hard times, but also finding the courage and the ability to forge ahead with new adventures and experiences. It means to not only use the earth, but also do our best to take care of her.

"Plowing through" has been my motto since my husband deployed 7 months ago. I might have gotten a little dirty and slung some mud, but I had fun and kept going.

Plowing thru for me means putting others ahead of yourself and sometimes doing things that you don't want to do in order to make someone else happy. These days it seems to always be "Do something for yourself! Make Yourself Happy!" While I agree with that it times people seem to be all about "ME, ME, ME" and plowing thru means that in order to be happy ourselves we need to make others happy. Isn't it truely better to give then receive?!

"Farmgirl plowin' through" is going to be my new motto as I race to get the last bits of my house painted before winter hits. I waited patiently for 3 years after we moved in here for my husband to start fixing up the house. But other things have been a higher priority for him. Finally, I just picked up a brush and got started. I may not have his strength or experience, but having a pretty house means more to me than to him. It's taken me 2 full years, and the help of a hired painting crew to do the really high bits, but my house is no longer the eyesore of the block. Yay! |

My mom has taught me by example about plowin' through. One example I remember most: A single mom with two hungry teenagers living in one of the countries most expensive places (Hawaii), my mom worked two jobs to take care of us. . . one night we sat down to a simple dinner of rice and chicken. I looked at my mom, who had no plate in front of her, and asked "Aren't you eating?" "Oh, I'm just not feeling too hungry right now, " was her reply. Looking back I realize she must have been famished, there was no other food in the house. But she did what she had to do, she provided for her children.

for me plowing through means that no matter if I'm the only one doing a certain task that needs doing..that yes I have the ability to go at the task head on until I get it accomplished and done..and I can plow through what needs doing with a proud farm girl spirit.
