My uncle died last week. He was the last of my father's family. He lived in Vancouver, Wash. for a long time. I saw him last in '99 at our Schwab family reunion in Calif. He was cremated. His memorial will be Nov. 1st. in Wash.

I said all this to say I am going to go to the memorial service. All my cousins will be there and I wish it were not because of a death in the family, but I am so exited to be going.

Everything is just working out and falling into place for this. Never before have I had someone stay at my home and farm sit. I have foung Ellie Mae! (My cousin said I need to get Jed and Ellie Mae to farm sit) She's coming Sun. morning to meet everyone. I thought I might have to dry the goats up but she's milked before!

My sister has already paid for airline tickets, so I can't back out now. I am working a little job that will pay for most of the trip. And the most profound thing is, the job I have is taking care of my friends parents while she's at work 3 days a week. This week is Wed. Thurs. and Fri. Same next week. But the week I'll be leaving, Oct. 28, she gets off early. And then she's off the week I'll be gone!! So it's like everything is working out for me to go.

I'll leave Oct. 28. Drive to Col. Springs to my sister's. From there, we'll drive to Denver, fly to Portland, Oregon, rent a car and go to Vancouver.

The whole reason I am writing this post is because I AM TERRIFIED of flying. Totally terrified. I have flown before but when I was a kid. It's been 32 years since I've flown since. I have nightmares about flying now. I have had several opportunities to go to Italy and the Virgin Islands with a lady I care for. I won't go because I'd have to fly. But if I make it through this , I am going.

So I am asking that you all would remember this poor ole Georgia girl on my road trip and esp. while I'm in the air! I will probably be drinking a lot. Do they still have those little bitty bottles of liquer? I'll probably need a few pints, though. Maybe some type of drug that will knock me out.

Also if anyone has tips for scardy cats on an airplane, I'll need those, too.

Thanks , ya'll. I hope I can look back on this time and laugh at myself. But I really am very nervous. The worst thing that could happen is I'll just lose $180.00 because I won't get on the plane. Then I'll miss the memorial because I'll have to drive to Vancouver from Col. Sprs.

Oh, well. It's only money, right?

(((HUGS)))...my tricks are lots of gum and a sleeping pill. I usually bring Tylenol P.M. or you could try just some melatonin, which is not as potent but will relax you a bit. Bring a book, buy some magazines, sewing, anything to keep your mind and hands busy and most of all B R E A T H E!!!! I hope it all works out for you.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. I too was a member of the flight fright club for many years!

I'm severely claustrophobic, so that's why I hated to fly. What really helped me was to bring a small journal and I wrote down everything I saw...clouds, the description of the land below, my feelings, etc. I made sure I was very detailed and descriptive, so that helped keep my mind occupied on my journaling and not my fear. I also brought my Ipod to listen to, which I had loaded soothing music, and of course I brought my knitting. I requested a window seat so I could look out and I even took photos of the views I saw.

I set a reward for myself at my destination (our flight was to go on a cruise to the bahamas)My reward was to do the dolphin encounter, which has to be one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had!

Avoid caffeine or alcohol before and during your flight. Bring gum to chew just in case you experience ear popping during the takeoff or landing.

I've flown several times since, and I'm actually starting to enjoy it!

You might want to talk to your doctor. They have some very safe prescription medicines that help with anxiety. I took Propanolol when I had anxiety attacks a few years ago and it worked great. It didn't change me, but just seemed to give me that little something extra to be able to cope. The pharmacist said he takes it when ever he has to do any public speaking.

Thank you all for the great advice. We'll only be in the air like 2 hours. So I'm so hoping time will "fly". Ha Ha.

Diana, they let you take knitting needles? I have no idea what is allowed on planes anymore. I didn't think they even allow any liquids, like even shampoo. So I shouldn't drink, either? I was kind of hoping that might help. Oh well. I'm not a drinker anyway. Maybe a glass of wine now and then.

I'm sure I'll take the journal idea. I do that every day, anyway. And lots of magazines, too.

Thanks, ya'll. I'm sure I'll have a great time with my sister and the cousins.

And my uncle was 95. He had a great life. Died in his sleep. What a way to go.

Kris

i'm not crazy about flying either. the ipod with one of those little soothing masks to put over your eyes is a good idea. (at bed/bath/beyond you could find one of those eye masks probably with a little aromatherapy in it!) also, i prefer to sit in an aisle seat! that way you are NOT looking out the window and won't feel so closed in. just keep thinking...my body is attached to the floor--also, the pilot and his/her crew all have families and want to arrive safely, too! weird, but works for me. hey, good luck!!!

A mask is a good thing, too. I would like to see the pilots first. Make sure they are all ok and in their right minds. I wonder if they let passengers up there?

What I'd really love to do is just go sit on a plane for a few minutes, but I doubt they let people do that.

ask to sit up toward the front, it's less bouncy and less noisy (from engine noise) also, you'll be closer to getting out at the end of the trip. you probably won't get to see the pilots because of security, but don't worry--you'll do fine. dress real comfortable, and in layers in case you feel a little apprehensive and start to get warm, you'll want to be able to cool down. take some life savers (or one of mary janes task bars for your tummy)

Kris, yes, knitting needles are allowed now on planes. I have taken them several times since the new regulations have been in place. Just remember to take your pocket knife out of your purse...those are not allowed! How do I know this? I tell ya, girl...it was like taking away my right arm.

Best wishes with your trip. I think all of the girls have given some great advice. Diana has it down to a science and knows herself well. Kris, sorry about your uncle. Hope the memorial gathering is a great celebration of his life.

I just have to say how exited I am to be going on this trip! And I have found the perfect farm sitter! She's milked goats before, so she's ok with that. She came this morning and did all the morning chores. She'll stay here at night. And the best part is she's wanted goats herself and I just happen to have 2 I want to sell so we're bartering !! She'll work here one week for the 2 babies, produce from the garden, milk and some gas money!! How neat is that? I am thrilled and I feel so confident in her that I don't think I'll worry TOO mich while I'm gone.

So it looks like everythings going pretty good here so far. I just need to talk my daughter into letting me use her car. And if gas prices stay as low as they are right now, I should be good to go!
