Looking once again to find some kindred spirits close to home. I live in the western suburbs of chicago, near the Brookfield Zoo. I love farm-girl activities: vegetable gardening, making soap and lotions, cooking from scratch, making my own to save a buck, and raising three kids, ages 16, 6, and 5. I also teach yoga. It would be great to find a similar mind close to home. Anyone out there? Perhaps start a chapter in the near-west suburbs?

Judi-I'm not a Chicago farmgirl (but I may be someday!....we may be moving there sometime soon) However, I am a city girl as well, AND a yoga teacher! So I think we'll have alot in common, aside from our names. (Judi/Judes) I also am a crazy cook, avid DIYer, artist, crafter, gardener, and am very into making homemade masks, lotions etc. So don't despair!
Lots of Love

Hey Judi!
My name's Laura and I live in Oswego, IL, about an hour's drive SW of Chicago. I also love farmgirl activities: gardening, crafts, cooking, and anything outdoors! I would love to live in the country one day, maybe start a farm, be self-sufficient, but for now I'm stuck in the suburbs! I'm 20 years old and I don't know too many people like myself, let alone people my own age. Sometimes I think I was born in the wrong century! How long have you taught yoga? I've always been interested in doing yoga. I hope to talk to you soon! Have a great night!

Hi, guys, thanks for your response. haven't checked here for a while. Laura, I have a friend that lives in Oswega, but i haven't talked to her for soooo long. She is remarried now, and i'm not sure of her new last name, but her first name is Suzanne. She was a good buddy in my "go out and dancing" years.
Joceyn, I would recommend a certification of some sort. I took a 9 month course here in Chicago at a place called The Temple of Kriya Yoga. Even though it is a bit more expensive, both in time and money, than a quick weekend course, it was great to really emerse and learn continuously for nine months. The confidence it gave me was as valuable as the knowledge. And of course, besides the knowledge, you need the ability to articulate it well. And make the class fun. I do love teaching. However, I'm really picky about going to a teacher. I have found one that I like, but i can only go to him through a health club that costs $80 a month. Oh, well.
Laura, I know what you mean about being born in the wrong century. My dream is to build a sustainable house on an 80 acre farm we have in the country, and live out there with my chickens, goats and horses (oh, and husband). We have two small girls, and a really nice home and school thing going here in the city, so i don't know if it will be a reality until my husband retires. But i plan to spend as much time out there as I can.
I hope you guys reply....I'll check on this subject sooner next time!

Hello Judi. I live in Homer Glen, about 25 minutes south of you. I live on a one acre wooded lot. I love to garden, grow herbs & tomatoes, and cook my little heart out! I've lived out here all my life. It used to be all farms out here, but sadly the city folk found us & now it's mainly one subdivision after the next. I make my own face cleanser & am looking for face lotion & eye cream recipes. I've joined Amanda's Chicago Urban Farmgirls chapter. I can't wait until we can all get together. I like doing simple crafts. I have more enthusiasm then talent though! I do Pilates on a daily basis, along with chasing after my 3.5 year old youngest son. (My other two sons are 22 & 25!) You will find a lot of us share your interests, you don't have to live on a farm to be a farmgirl.

Hey, Judi! I'm Kaylyn, I live out in Saint Charles. That means the only easy way to get here from Chicago is due west on the Union Pacific line into Geneva!

I have no land, but I'm never going to give up hope that I can get out of the suburban rat-race and get some land west of here some day. (And by west, I'm not picky: it can be in Burlington, IL...Galena, IL...Missoula, MT...Jackson Hole, WY.) It just needs to have a bit of land and a great deal less traffic.

In the meantime, I make my own *stuff* - whatever fancy strikes me - and visit forest preserves, go camping, and hang with the dudes (my family.) Welcome to a fun group of like-minded women!! ~ K

Wow, to me anything around Brookfield Zoo is CITY!!! I live west of you, waaaay out in the corn. I have corn to the north, south, east and west of me. Well, sometimes it's beans, but usually it's corn. My hubby and I raised our daughters here, and now have one dog, two cats, and 5.5 horses. (Mare is due to foal soon.) We used to have Jersey cows, feeder pigs, and chickens when the kids were at home. I still grow a nice little organic garden, and cook from scratch. I love it here! The mayapples are up in the woods, and there's a carpet of white, purple, and yellow violets, and the purple trillium are coming up. We've been here 24 years.

So I'm only *sort of* in the area, but I sure recognize a kindred spirit!

I've been gone for a while, but I'm in northern IL also, although west of Chicago. We're just south of Sterling Rock Falls.

We have an 'old fashion' farmstead. Do a lot of the farm work with the Belgian draft horses. Keep chickens for meat and eggs, as well as various other poultry. We have a Jersey for milk, a steer calf for beef, a couple Berkshire hogs for pork. A couple of honeybee hives. We've planted an orchard of apples, pears, cherries, peaches & plums as well as a grape arbor. Some herb gardens, a vegetable garden and new this year a berry garden with cranberries, blueberries, blackberries, red, gold & black raspberries.

I've made milk soap since 1999, lotions, balms. I love the fiber arts and spin, weave, crochet, knit and locker hook. DH is a blacksmith & furniture maker.

We sure have fun!
