Ok, ladies, what is the consensus on using mayo jars etc for canning? I have a ton of them and put them off until last "just in case", and I would never use them in the pressure canner, but I always wonder "Should I, shouldn't I"? How do you all feel about it?

My grandmother used mayo jars quite often to can. ? I don't know much about it, though, but it seemed to work for her.

We used to use those jars all the time. Hot water bath. I think I still have a few left, but have collected mostly the labeled canning jars. We never had any problems using them.

I just used some recently. Like you, Suzanne, I save them for last. I've never had a problem in the water bath canner.

The glass is much thinner than a regular Mason jar, so I'd think they'd be more likely to break. Other than that, why not?

I used to use them all the time. Have heard recently that you should not put them in the pressure cooker. The glass jars that we grew up with were probably better quality than the newer ones. But then everything is plastic now. I think all things packed in glass should have a standard size lid so we can use them in our canning. I hate to have to throw away pickle jars. But we can't reseal them. Or Can we?

I've seen friends reuse many different types of jars. It's the kind of thing where it often works but it's not as reliable as a real canning jar. I'd hate to open a jar and find that it had gotten moldy because the lid didn't seal properly. Or worse, serve the food not knowing that it was bad!

I have used them alot. They used to be nicer than they are now for sure...I still have some that were my grandma's jars!! I tend to not use them in the pressure canner though. They work great for the water bath if you can find older ones. Heck..it is hard to find GLASS mayo jars these days, isn't it??

I grew up canning. We never used mayo jars for canning as they might crack during the heating process. One idea for your large pickle jars - my kids always used them to collect change, toys or special finds like geodes.

I would never use a jar that the lid did not fit perfectly...or ever re-use a lid (just to clarify that) it would be VERY unsafe for sure.

People save these for me all the time.

They just aren't as durable and mess up the count in the canner. The fatter jars don't allow for many in the canner at one time

They do help w/ dry good storage though

I used to use mayo jars for canning until I had a couple break in the canner. Now I use "real" canning jars, some of which I inherited from my mother and are almost 70 years old but I haven't had a problem with any of them. The glass is thicker than mayo jars and holds up to heat and pressure better.

I have always heard not to use other jars because they could break.

Speaking of which

Has anyone else noticed how difficult it's getting to find certain glass containers?

I wanted salad dressing in glass, and all but a few have turned to plastic!

I save other jars for storage and don't usually can in them. That little extra couscous I bought, the trail mix so it isn't in plastic. I even put frozen strawberries in a jar after I have froze them. Saves me space too.
