I'm trying to deal with this hypothyroid junk, and I'm on the thyroid medicine, but I'm still over weight, by skin and hair is dry and itchy and I'm a stressed out mess with health worries. I have some idea that there must be a way of living and diet that will help me lose weight and live more healthy. My doctors nurse says to just get used to being plump. I'm not convinced of this fate yet.
Same for Irritable bowel Syndrome (IBS)....I know this is an unpleasant topic, but I'm tired of living with both of them.

Do any of you have these problems and have any of you had success or relief from some of the ever present symptoms in a natural way? I'm going to try a more organic and raw diet and see if that helps with my problems.

Just thought I'd ask, they are beating me up

Annika - I am sorry to hear you have these health worries. We all have our own. My mom fought the same battles, and I wonder if somehow they are related? I think an organic and raw diet will help just about anything, and I would agree you should try it and also - drinnk lots and ots of water.

I have hypothyroidism. It has been regulated, finally, with thyroid medication. At least I'm not freezing cold all the time now. My biggest problem is the RA (rheumatoid arthritis) and that doesn't bother me as much as the humongous amount of $$ I have to spend on the medication. I'm on Remicade and will hopefully get it up to once every eight weeks. It is so expensive. I don't have pain and that is a blessing. The problem came on so rapidly after I had arthroscopic surgery and got a terrible staph infection. I'll probably never forgive the doctor for that one. Anyhow, I am gaining weight through inactivity and would like to be thin like I once was. I don't know how to lose weight for me except that I should be exercising a whole lot more.

All I can say is try to follow the doctor's orders because you don't want him/her giving up on you. You can try all the diets and I hope it works for you. I'm sorry you have these problems.

Annika I have both problems and I am not ever going to get used to being "plump". I have found that coconut macaroon cookies help the IBS as does rocking in my rocking chair after eating also trying to keep the stress down to a soft roar. I am taking synthroid for the thyroid problems and not seeing a huge improvement, I try to walk everyday and watch what I eat.
Hang in there you are not alone.

I used to have Hyperthyroidism (Graves Disease). Was on meds, had the nuclear iodine treatment, in isolation for 5 days due to the radiation. Later developed Hypo. Now am Hyper again, yikes. My Thyroid is working overtime. Am always cold, am too skinny, have very dry skin, very tired all the time etc. Seems I have the symptoms of both Hypo and Hyper, strangely enough. I have to have another bloodtest end of this month to see wether these meds did the trick and then might be on others again. YIKES!!

Annika, I have IBS and both my mother and sister have hypothyroid but as yet, I have steered clear of it. For IBS, have you been to the website www.helpforibs.com ? It's an excellent site, I love her products and the forum is very supportive. As far as the hypothyroid...what I do when I can feel my thyroid is acting 'sluggish' is to clean up my diet...no msg, no nitrates, good protein (I eat red meat, chicken...) and as little processed foods as possible. I don't do raw diets because it really upsets the IBS. But it is real important to get the right kind of fiber to keep your 'system' clean if you know what I mean? The quickest way I have found to balance my system is to make sure everything is 'moving' along the way it should (a poop a day keeps the dr away!) I think you'll find the IBS website helpful!

Jeannie, Betty, Kathy and Marian and Kim, I sincerely hope that you get some relief for the various things that are troubling your health, You are all so kind to respond to my post. Jeannie, I'm trying to wean myself of coffee and drink lots of water, which does seem to help a bit. Betty, Your advice is well take. I wish you well with the RA. Can you get on any of the drug plans that heklp you pay for expensive medicines? just a thought. I KNOW how spendy they all are. Kathy, I think I'll go rocking chair shopping! And Marian YIKES! you take care girl!

Kim THANK YOU for the web site. I'm going there now! I'm so sorry that you have it too, it is misery incarnate.

Annika I know the rocking chair sounds odd but it really has helped me. I am wondering if the rocking motion helps the digestion or maybe just is all over calming. I sure hope you get some help as this can be a miserable way to live.
Hugs, Kathy

My thyroid is rather wacked out too. I have nodules and the endocrinologist is treating them (no cancer there) with the thyroid meds. I was high (is that hyper or hypo I forget?) and he is still adjusting the dose..ugh. Luckily THAT medicine is inexpensive for me. My blood pressure medicine is the one that is costly. BUT...it is helping.
Good luck.I didn't even know I had thyroid problems until less than a year ago..it affects everything!

Actually Kathy, the rocking chair doesn't sound at all weird to me, i had just never thought of it but you rock babies to sooth them, why on earth wouldn't it work for adults? Thank you so much for giving me the tips, and I love coconut so no arguments about the macaroons either =)

Thank you *hugs*

You are hyper, your thyroid is working too fast Jenny, and yes the wretched thing does affect everything! I can roundly say that my thyroid is a beastly thing and I'm not liking it much.
Good luck getting yours in balance ok? and the nodules should go away I think.
hugs to you too

I've had IBS for years; sometimes it kept me housebound as I was afraid to get more than 10 steps from the bathroom. Over the years I've tried a lot of things and what works best is a very low fat diet, eating small amounts (like 6 teeny meals a day rather than one or two big ones), and yes, Activia yogurt. Also for me a vegetarian diet is better.

My story is much like Dutchy's with Graves disease first treated with medication and 10 years later radioactive iodine then isolation. My thyroid died and now I have to have medication. I have found that several internal medicine doctors are unaware of the problems we have with big changes in medication so I have found a good endocrinologist who knows just where to keep me. I have also been told not to take generic products since there is a larger variant in the dosage which I tend to be very sensitive to. As for the plumpness... I exercise everyday and never will be thin and never have been. I find that my symptoms are similar with hypo and hyper. It used to be the difference was my heart rate. It was rapid with hyper and decreased with hypo but now I am getting older it can go either way. I wish you well and most of all suggest finding a doctor who knows a lot about thyroid trouble. I once saw an eye doctor who had thyroid cancer and he thought it would be helpful if support groups existed since thyroid trouble causes so many changes including personality. I hope you feel well soon and keep getting checked since my dosage has to be changed often. For some reason it is usually in the spring and fall when I notice problems. Best Wishes.
