I wont be able to get them all seperated and moved before it freezes . I have to haul dirt for each bed i am adding them to. I have a huge fantasy of a dump truck pullinggup to my front yard and giving me a load of topsoil

Lisa, I found I had the same problem this year and gave away hundreds of them and they then reproduced MORE! My beds look like I never touched them. I am in the process of building one more bed which I will not allow it to reproduce, just so I can have lots of berries. I'll let the other beds grow babies and just give the babies to friends or sell at our market.

I know how you feel.

they are a mixture of june and everbearing plants. I am going to have to do like lisamarie and not let the replanted ones have babies. I want to watch for scrap lumber being thrown away over the winter and maybe build a bed on the inside of the longer bed also. I tried to find anyone around her ethat would want plants but all the neighbors raise "lawns" . They think it more than weird to have a garden.Funny how 4 of the neighbors dont mind to ask me if i have ripe tomatoes do they .

The problem with cutting the runners is that the "mother" plants get tired and produce less and smaller berries. So maybe cut it down to one runner per plant and you should be able to keep it in check.

So let me get this straight? You cut off the runners from the Mother plant so she not only doesn't reproduce but has bigger berries? I have just a few to transplant right now and am wondering how to set it up so I don't run inot this problem either. Mine are 6 of June and 6 of Ever bearing.

Mine are all everbearing. I found this year that with the plants I continued to cut babies off of produced more berries. The ones that continued to produce babies had hardly any berries. If cutting them all off tuckers the mother out, then I suppose I could allow one on each plant. I'll try that next year, Betty.

This is what I love about this website...it's like you girls are reading my mind. I have over 400 sq ft of strawberries that need thinning, but we are having record high temps, and I can't last long out there (we're still in summer). I've never thinned them before, the first year was just ok, this was the second year and the berries were huge. They are so overgrown now that I can't even walk in between the rows. Can I just replant the runners, trim up the mothers, and and a new layer of dirt/compost,then straw? I'm really new to all of this and I could sure use some advise. Anyone want to come to California? I could sure use a few "sisters" right about now!

oh no!! 400 ft of them :) I would never get them all straightened out. lisalu --yours did like mine too. I am not sure if i am doing it right but i made new beds and then dug them up and moved them. They were such a mess i couldnt trim anything. Now i will stay on top of them next year when they start making babies. I will be sure to leave a new baby or two like betty said . I went online to library and reserved some berry growing books last night. I Know i can look up info online --but there is something about holding a book and reading :P Next year i am just growing the berries--tomatoes--sweet taters and green beans. That is all i see to have luck with. Squash gets eaten by the rabbits and bugs. The rabbits LOVE green pepper and snow pea plants. They chewed them off to the ground . Darn rabbits dug right under my fence to get in the yard this year.

I love the picture! That will be my cat in a few weeks. My wonderful hubby is building a chicken coop for me! Again - I have NO CLUE what I'm doing out here in the middle of nowhere pretending to be a country girl! But I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! If someone would have told me 10 years ago that I would be living like this, I would have laughed out loud! This is so much more fun than high heels, company cars, and 2 hour lunches, and boring board meetings!
I'll be asking for help about the chickens in a few....hope y'all have a nice day!
P.S.
The "Lu" was added to my name by one of my "city friends"..lol...
