We have Wild Blackberry Bushes. I want to know do wild blackberry vines that turn black, are they dead or will they sprout leaves again and have berries? My husband wants to try to train them to go up trellis. And he wants to thin them out.

THE VINES THAT HAD BERRIES ON THEM ARE DONE, THEY SHOULD BE REMOVED IF POSSIBLE. THE NEWER SHOOTS THAT HAD NO BERRIES THIS YEAR WILL BE NEXT YEAR'S BERRY PRODUCING ONES. Whoops, didn't realize I hit the caps button....

I have a 2 year old blackberry vine, last year I cut it all down, and the new canes came up 2" thick! I had them grow up and over an trellis. This year, my husband built a huge wooden arbor, and I'm in the process of unwinding the vines, and directing the new ones over to the new arbor. It's a lot of work, but my blackberries were so huge and sweet, it's worth it. When I'm done with the blackberries, it's the boysenberries next! I say cut them all down, and then as they grow, anchor them over your trellis. It will be good for the plants, and soooo much easier!

I have raspbery plants that were almost written off and tossed.
Didn't look like they were doing much so I hacked 'em way down earlier this spring.
The black variety came back first with a vengance and produced great big berries. The the red variety is still bearing and producing new shoots. Think all total the bushes have produced well in excess of 5 gallons!

We also have wild blackberries. We have the room to just let them "be wild". We cut them back a little once in a while, but they produce loads every year (on new wood like Karin said above). Our one big patch is a home for a couple dozen quail, so we HAVE to leave it!
