Using a cold frame this winter for their salad greens? I was just curious what everyone is growing. I am using a black seeded Simpson, Slobolt, Red velvet and Bronz Arrowhead and spinach ( all heirloom of course~ In true maven fashion). We are still having temps in the 80's and my tomatoes are going NUTS, but I am preparing the cold frames and getting them planted so that I will have salad "greens" all winter.

OH.. Jealous.... I would love to have a sun room~ But I have to say, my little cold frames turned out so cute. I found some old windows and this will be fun.. although while I am out slogging through the rain, sleet and snow to get my greens.. you will be warm and cozy in your sun room ....... :(

I have the windows Rene, just need to think about how mine can go together...different size than the ones in the magazine article about this or wherever I saw MJ's article...could be one of her books? I have lost track! Where do you get your heirloom variety plants or seeds?

I just planted some lettuces and broccoli this weekend. We stay warm enough to grow them without a cold frame, but I want to make one for the winter. I read where you can use straw bales to make the sides and then lay the windows on top. I may give that a try. :)

I get them from a variety of places. My favorite seeds are through Seeds of change, only because I found them years ago. This year one of the local landscapers who has a garden store called Yellow Rose here in Prosser carried the FERRY-Morse Line and I bought some of that as well. My tomatoes I get from at plant biologist that works at the WSU experiement stations and they are all organically grown heirloom (he sells them at the farmers market), My herbs I get from another local named Kelly Weigers (she is also one of the prosserfarmchicks) and she has natures gate farm and nursery here in Prosser and some of the most wide variety of herbs I know of. I feel so blessed that I have a whole lot of amazing people right here that are all knowing about Organic and heirlooms and keep me well stocked. come on down this spring and I will hook you up.. OH hey, maybe we can do a HOW2 farmgirl meeting here in MAY.. everyone will go home with tons of heirloom, seeds, plants and info....
As for your cold frame. I just measured the windows and doors that I am using and made a wood box to match the window... added some hinges.. dug out the soil where I was going to plant it about 2/3's the way in depth and planted away.....

Good mornin all. The fall garden is growing and I can't wait for some fresh lettuce again. Using left over seeds, a mix of leaf lettuce.
I've been getting bales of straw for $3 each and will be building a wall around the plants with glass top. I like the cold frame with wood and may make that as well.
Oh to have plants growing in the garden when the snow flies. Blooms are on the green beans so I hope I can save them if we get a cold snap.
Going to plant turnips today, they are ok without protection.
Any way the straw will be used serveral ways. Fall decorations, seats around the campfire, cold frame,bedding in the Hen Den, then composting and the old bales for mulching around plants this coming spring. Haven't tried growing in a straw bale yet. But seen pictures, pretty cool.

Fall gardens are great, but, I havent gotten all of my summer garden put to sleep, we have 25 below in the winter, so no fall garden outside for me, my 14x70 greenhouse MIGHT have greens in it, maybe resting might happen too....cup of coffee in front of the fire,,,sounds good....

I have a sun porch for the first time in my life so can I plant greens in containers and put them in the windows? What all can you grow that doesn't require pollenating in the winter inside?

Sandra - lettuce/greens work well indoors. You don't want to let those grow long enough to flower and go to seed.
I'd love to try the cold frame. I've got some old windows. But I can't be home to open and close it as the temperature changes, so I don't think it would work. |

Ok. Curious once again. How many of you have tried a cold frame and how cold before they don't really let things grow? I love to have my spinach and don't have a sunroom to grow things in. I was reading these old posts and wondered how many of you use a cold frame

Hey Lori hi! I haven't done cold frame but my best friend keeps shelves shop lights on all winter and grows stuff. It works just not as fast. If you Google cold frame farming it will give you information about zones and season length of production. Wishing you luck!

Thank you Vicki. I eat a lot of spinach all year long and thought it would save money to grow my own as long as possible. I'll have to google it and get busy making a frame. LOL
