To all of the ladies at Farmgirl Connection some of us are wanting to start a fund so that we can help those in need, but we are not sure how to set it up! I really think we ought to do this and whoever wants to donate could! To start I need to find out if there is an interest in this! I know of 3 sisters right now who could use help and even if we all put in just 5.00 it would really add up, so please let me know what you think and we will go from there! I did ask Megan about this and she said their plates were full right now, but to go for it!

Monica,
Thank you for getting the ball rolling on this. It is an AWESOME idea. Do you think something like a paypal acct. or have some one at the office hold the funds until they can be distributed?

Has anyone else had experience in the fundraising dept. and have some ideas?

Brenda, isn't it past your bed time over there!! I don't know quite how to start! I figured for starters I would see how much interest there is! I have done fund raising before, but on a very small scale! We would need some type of account to put funds into! We would also need to decide who would have access to it and how do we distribute it! Do we keep it among the farmgirls or do we start a non-profit organization!?????? HELP!!!!

Monica, I agree it seems a paypal account would be the safest and easiest route for all to make contributions or to do pay outs from. It's free to set up an account. I know I have one for ebay and I like that I can make purchases without my personal credit card info getting into a strangers hands and also that ppl can make purchases from me and feel the same. I wonder if we need any legal advice on this? There needs to be a treasurer who will take care of doling out and receiving and keeping a good record of funds. And how will we decide who will qualify? Just some thoughts to kick around. Think what a blessing this could be to a sister or sisters who might need emergency funds for hotels or food, gas, etc. during a disaster such as Ike was. Yeah sisters for acting on this one!

Yes to legal input. I think you would be better off to start a nonprofit.I for one would not wan't to have all this money funneled through any of my accounts. You are going to have to have a group say pres vice pres, sect, tres and all too. And a good accountant. Just for checks and balance. But I think it is a good idea. Who would determine need too.

Count me in as a donator, ladies! However, I've got to ask. If you set up a paypal account, do we have to use a credit card to contribute? In my case, I don't have a credit card to use. It would have to be cash, check or money order. And definitely -- any time you do something like this, you will need to get legal input, at the very least. What do the girls at the main Mary Jane's office say? Do they have a legal someone you can run this by?

Julie, I e-mailed Megan and she said right now they have their plates full, but to go for it! I think the pay pal idea would be good, but I think we should also try to set it up so if someone doesn't have a credit card they could still donate! The legal input would be good!

Are there any chapters that are well established that might be interested in running it!

Just to throw this out there, my other thought was to see if maybe a "Farmgirls In Need Forum" could be added that way if we knew of someone who needs help we could post it(with their permission of course)!

Diana, I agree about the non-profit part of it! As far as how to determine need, that would partly be determined how much we had in the fund!

I dont know how much help I'll be, but we have a PayPal account in order for our chapter Heirloom Mavens. Its to establish funds for heirloom seed. We did nominate a treasurer for it and I think with Paypal you can deposit a check. A debit check card would be the easiest. Make sure that whoever you appoint to treasurer will be a good book keeper and be able to offer copies of statements at anytime. I'm not saying any of US would have sticky fingers, that has been my past experience in OTHER avenues. Contact your local tax personnel for non-profit info. As far as legalities, with our extensive network of farmgirls there has got to be a lawyer/accountant around to bounce this off of. I personally think its a fab idea. I simpler idea would be to go to your local bank and set up a contribution fund. They should have lots of info on that. It'd be like a savings account and it'd draw interest.

I love this idea. I work for a law firm and I set up LLCs or non-profits all the time. Let me check with my attorney to see what would be best. You would need a registered agent and mailing address and apply with your Secretary of State in that state. Does that make sense? I also like the paypal idea.

Thank God I live in the country!

Okay, talked with my attorney. He said whoever decides they want to be in charge, could set up a non-profit corporation. This way donations can be tax-deductible. I know here in Ga., we can go to our Secretary of State website, go to the corporations tab, and apply online. The only stinker is it is $100 to set up with Secy. of State. When you apply online, it asks for the name of the company, the name of the registered agent, the mailing address and automatically fills in your Articles of Incorporation which you need. Then you would probably need a separate checking account at a bank and they might require a federal tax id#. It looks like it could get costly.

The other option to get started with if you wanted to start small and just see how much money is collected, would be possibly to start a paypal account and then disburse money from that. I think the only bad thing would be it would not be tax deductible.

Another idea (not from a legal standpoint) might be to have a folder set up online and if the people who are in need would "apply" or put there name in there then people could send money or whatever if they so chose to.

Hope this helps.

Thank God I live in the country!

In reference to a Paypal account - as long as the sender has a paypal account (which you would need to send money to a paypal account) You can use a credit card or you can have the money taken right from your back account. It works like an electronic check.

I think this is a great idea but there needs to be some serious thought into how we decide WHO gets the money and how we will determine that there is a LEGITIMATE need. I hope most of us on here are honest people but when you are dealing with a computer screen rather than face to face you never really know. If we start haveing money to "give" some people will show up looking for it wether or not they have a real need. There will be people who invent stories. I hate to put a negative spin on this but If I were to give I'd like to know for certain that we REALLY knew where the money was going and what it was being used for.

I know it is important to have it all legal and appropriate, but isn't it a shame that the help will have to wait for all the red tape. While we are seeking the best way to have an ongoing fund, couldn't we just send money to Monica this one time and we already know of three farmgirls who need it now and divide what comes in by a certain date and give it to them? I don't know Monica but I would send her money to give out and ask no questions, call me naive but I have higher regard for the gals here and their integrity in the face of need. Or else just get addresses and send individually and by- pass the red tape altogether I know what the world says is the right thing but why does it have to be so complicated to give to someone in need? Just my opinion...but there goes simple...Debbie

Debbie, I am humbles by your trust in me, thank you! I have actually contacted 2 of the ladies who need help to ask if I could let the girls know so as you said just get started now! I am still waiting to hear from them to see if it's okay to post their needs so I will let you know as soon as I hear from them! I have thought maybe the easiest way to do this would be to have something like a Farmgirls in Need Forum if it could be added and then we could send help as we see fit! Alot of us get to know each other better and we could then just make our own judgement call on who to help! Simple is good!

I agree with Julie about providing a way for the group to know if there is a true need. If it is a disaster like Ike was that will make it easier as Mary Jane's office would have addresses/names of people who could potentially be in need. Other things such as job loss maybe showing someone appointed a copy of a pink slip from work. In other cases...a collection notice? I don't know...some of this might feel embarrassing to a person but there should be a way to make this work without causing that? Julie is also right about paypal. As long as you have a bank account they can put money in your account or withdraw some at your request. It is free to set up a personal account. They basically function as a bank. Whoever has charge of the account is able to see all transactions each month on the statement. Wondering if perhaps Rebecca (sp?) who writes the city farm girl column would have more info or even be a good candidate to be in charge of this or is she part of Mary Jane's team and unable to participate? She has a legal background too if I recall...including being a judge?

Call me naive but you know, where I live, every now and then there are people who stand out at the highway with signs saying "need money, out of work, my car died, etc." I used to think no way was I going to donate anything to these people because I thought they were con artists. Then the Lord impressed on my heart to give anyway and he would deal with the people if they were doing it under false pretenses.

I would hope that the honesty of all of our Farm Girls should count for something. I know that I could never take anything from anyone on false pretenses.

I like the idea of the Farm Girls in Need forum.

I've been trying to read this posting whenever I happen to have a bit of time and it is wonderful to see so many behind the plan. Monica has felt the call to champion this need and after reading all of our ideas and input it does truly seem if we are to get this going maybe we just need some faith and trust that our group of women aren't your run of the mill chat group. We're a pretty special lot from all I've seen and read here. Soooo I nominate Monica to take charge of the finances and disperse funds to those in need. I think the money needs to be on a voluntary donation basis but maybe to avoid the red tape we just mail to Monica directly. Any seconds?

Cheryl, I think I am going to shoot you!!! Seriously though I have been thinking what may work best is to see if a Farmgirls In Need forum could be added! That way we would have a specific place to put stuff! Then we could also make our own judgment about helping! I also think for the most part it would be someone else saying "hey this person needs help" not "hey I need help"! I know a lot of us have formed friendships and talk about all kinds of things including rough times! I also think a lot of us are too proud to ask!!!

Right now though Marly/Bear5 needs our help! They had 3 1/2 feet of water in their house from Ike! All of their furniture is ruined and they have a mess to clean up!
She says hi and misses chatting very much! Please keep her and hubby in your prayers!
If you are interested in helping or even just sending a note I know it would be greatly appreciated!!! E-mail me and I will give you her address!!

Thank you Ladies! You are all such a special bunch to me

Gosh I haven't even been here a month and I'm gettin' killed already....LOL Ooohh you know what would be fun too? If we made a care package of soap, dishcloths, towels and things to help them with the cleaning. Something to make her smile a bit in the midst of disaster. Monica, you'll be super at this I have great faith in you to make sound decisions and I think the farm girls in need posting would be helpful
