...my silly, car chasing dog chased my neighbors car down our driveway and went under the tires. She had an similar accident last November and lost an eye. Animals succumb to so many fatalities in the country, but this one comes after a series of fur baby losses over the last 6 months (another dog and four cats--three cats in the last month) and I'm falling apart. I bent over backwards to make sure my neighbor knew I felt it was an accident (he's just a kid), but I blubbered like I did when my mother died. This is life after all, but I feel so guilty for somehow allowing my babies to be in harms way (like by living in a world that has cars and preditors in it!) Sorry to rattle on...I know people here will understand where I'm coming from. I just feel so foolish.

Dogs are great but sometimes that instinct to chase can take over regardless of what you do to protect them. I am so sorry for your loss. I lost a dog this summer and I was expecting it. I know how difficult it can be. I will keep you in my prayers.

Celeste, You are not foolish at all!!! I am so sorry for your loss! Sometimes things happen that are just out of our hands! I found a baby cactus wren that I fed for three days before it died and I cried for a week! I kept thinking did I feed it too much or not enough! Please don't feel guilty if you know in your heart you did the best!

Thank you all for the kind words. I'm usually so much more 'controlled' in my grief over losing pets. I guess all the recent loss was just too much and I'm just feeling all of it at once. Anyway...this too shall pass. I've told my daughter in the past that these animals all come into our lives for a time, some shorter than others, and we have to feel blessed with whatever time we have with them. But, sometimes you just feel there was something you could have 'done' that would have made the situation different...

So sorry. Pets bring such love, joy and compassion to our lives. They are family to me and it hurts when we lose one.

That certainly was not your fault at all. Things like that just happen sometimes. I always figure there must be someone up in heaven that needed them more than me. Sorry for your loss. Beverley

I'm sorry to hear of your loss too Celeste. It's tough when we open our hearts to those furry critters-- especially when we get so attached to them. I had a bad lambing/kidding season this year. 4 out of 7 lambs lost, and 3 out of 7 kids. (Hmm.... now that I look at the actual numbers it's kind of an interesting pattern....) I tried to save one of the kids, but he didn't make it. He was so tiny and week. It just broke my heart. All but one of the lambs was gone when I found them-- nothing I COULD do, and the other... well, lets just say she had an Excellent mother, unfortunately, her mother can't COUNT! (first set of twins for that ewe-- she's had singles up 'till now)
I guess we have to just love them while we can, and be thankful for the time we got to share with them. And there's nothing wrong with crying and feeling such loss over a PET. They are a big part of our lives. We just never know HOW MUCH until they are gone. Hugs ~~~ Tracy

Oh Celeste, I'm so very sorry for the loss of your beloved puppy. Sometimes there is just nothing you can do when a puppy gets into that car chasing mode. My folks share a little pomm with a neighbor lady. It loves my mom and comes to visit her whenever the neighbor lady lets him out to potty and he chases cars. My folks and Sandy are all worried that he'll get his little fanny hit by a car or truck. My mom so wishes he was hers cuz she says she'd put a shock collar on him and train him not to go near the road. I don't know if those things work or not and not sure I could do that kind of tough love but maybe a thought for the future to prevent future heart break. Hurt for you....lots of huggggzzzzz

| How awful for you! I understand completely. Our wonderfully, young, energetic pup bounded out the door about 3 years ago and was running around the mailman's car right in front of our house. We are on a private road. He gunned it for some reason and ran right over him (in front of my 5 year old!) Talk about tears! When my husband got home from taking the dog to the vet (he was already gone), all three of us just climbed in my bed and cried. It was heart wrenching. I didn't think I had bonded to that dog but I had been very sick and he had hardly left my side while I was home recuperating. My only other dog had lived till he was almost 15. I wasn't prepared. It will take time and lots of hugs. I'm sending a couple your way! T |

Celeste, I am so sorry for you having to endure the loss of another beloved pet. I've had many dogs and cats (including those belonging to the neighbors but I fell in love with). Some were here for a short time, some for many years, but it always was heart-breaking to lose them. You can be strong for just so long and then the emotions have to come out. You've had so many losses in such a short time that you just haven't had the time to heal enough from each of them. The healing will come and the memories will be sweet. But there will always be a hole where each special little friend lived and that's how it's supposed to be so we don't forget them. Bless you for caring for them and loving them so much.

Please know that my heart knows the pain you are going thru and no words will be of comfort. I wished I could be there to give you a hug but again I know that this will not ease the pain. All you can do is go thru the pain, give permission to cry whenever you feel the need and time to remember all the joy that you shared with your furry friend. I still will cry buckets when I think of my four legged family memembers who have passed on - there has been many - but if I could pass on one thing it is this - It is because I love them so dearly that my heart breaks and I would not have it any other way.
Know that you are loved, cared about and I stand beside you....

Celeste, sorry about your pup...it's always hard no matter how we lose them. Those chasing instincts are just that, instincts and hard to break. Lost a dog this summer to chasing our horses (heeler) and she finally got knocked in the head hard by a stray hoof. Kicked myself for getting lax on scolding her out of the horse pen...still miss that little stinker. She was very devoted to me and just as hard-headed (not quite hard-headed enough though) as I am so we were 2 peas in a pod. Know just how you're feeling. Take care.

Oh gads!
My heart is in my throat for you.
We live on a dead end dirt road and our neighbors at the last house have a very bad habit of driving too fast.
Our dog is a herder, so she won't run straight. It's so scary
I'm trying to train her to get onto the porch whenevr a vehicle approaches but sometimes we are in the middle of the yard or in a chicken coop and it's hard to drop what we are doing
I miss our last neighbors who would actually stop and let her pass or give us a chance to catch up

Celeste- I have been there myself, many times, as some of you already know. One of the hazzards of having farm dogs, I guess, and it sucks! I know the guilt you are feeling, and believe me, it doesn't help the situation. I have lost a lot of pets in the past year and a half and it can be very overwhelming at times still. I am so sorry about your dog and other pets and hope you feel better soon.
