I want to thank all veterans alive and passed who paid the ultimate price and who have served this great country. I stepped out on my porch this morning and breathed the sweet air of freedom because of America's veterans. Thank you Dad for serving your country in 1944-46 in the Pacific on the New Orleans in the battle of Okinawa. Thank you Uncle Richard for serving your country in Korea. Thank you Phil, Sugar Bear, Tom, Kevin, Steve for serving your country in Vietnam...and thanks to all the veterans of Desert Storm, Afghanistan, and Iraq and those still fighting for the sweet breath of freedom.

If I keep a green bough in my heart, the singing bird will come.

When my Christina was in High School in NY about 12 years ago, her chorus was picked to go to Arlington National Cemetery and sing for Veterans Day. I was a reporter then, and I went as a chaperone and to do the story for the paper. you should have seen those kids' faces as we went through Arlington. They couldn't believe the rows and rows upon rows of crosses was very sobering for them. It was an unforgetable weekend.

For me, the most unforgettable part happened at the Wall. There were many Vietname vets there and they all looked devastated. So I just began walking up to them and saying simply, "Welcome home." Some burst into tears. All hugged me. I felt that I represented the whole dang country with those guys who hadn't heard those two little words that meant so much. I'll never forget it and every Veterans Day, that's what I remember most.

Patricia

Oh man, Patricia,

You just made me cry. What a beautiful thing to do. You have such a good soul. That made a big difference to some folks when you did that. I know when my DH and I were leaving to go visit daughter, SIL & Grandbaby last spring - we saw a Mom and her son in his desert camo @ the airport. They were quietly talking. When he left she sat there silently sobbing. I know my DH thinks I'm crazy, but I just had to go up and hug her and pat her back. She was all alone and it wasn't right. Sometimes we just have to step outside the comfort zone and touch a stranger.

Amen. Our soldier, my cousin, is home from Iraq, with her hubby and little boy. Every time I think of our veterans, I see the picture of my dad and his brother on Anzio beach, they are thin and dirty and so tired. I am so grateful for them and for all who have served the county on our behalf.

Greetings from the morning side of the hill.
