When we will all start saying "Enough is enough already!"
What can we do to take back our food safety..to ensure that our food supply is safe?
I don't know about you..but I'd certainly rather deal with a stomach ache (from "possible salmonella" than a cancer risk any day.)
Isn't all of this spraying with chemicals getting ridiculous!
What can we do to say "enough is enough! we want untainted/chemical free foods!??

Tina,
I know this stuff makes me crazy. A couple summers ago we went to CA to see our oldest son graduate from the Marine Corp Bootcamp and on the way decided to stop and visit Organic Pastures (Mark MCAfee's raw milk dairy) we used thier product and thought touring the dairy would be a great activity for our youngest son Matthew.... During our visit with Mark he told us that "Raw Nuts" would soon be illegal in CA. I was Stunned...I know that Mark has done a lot to reverse this insanity.. but wow~~~~~ Thanks for the reminder....

well..what can we do?
it's o.k. to read about this stuff and go.."oh wow"..and I've been guilty of doing the "oh my"..."oh wow" and then just ignoring it/forgetting it...thinking surely things will get better...but they aren't.(and Renee please hon' don't take this statement personal..I am not meaning it that way at all..I am meaning we all sometimes tend to read things then quickly forget the impact it is actually having upon us/our children/ and the impact it will have on future generations...so that statement is not meant to be taken personal/a lot of us read things in the news then quickly forget them)
so..what can we farm gals do? any ideas?/suggestions on how we can back these farmers that don't want to have to use these dangerous chemicals. How can we make our voices heard?what differences can we make? We are a strong online community..can we make a difference by uniting against the dangerous use of chemicals on our food supplies?

I know the first thing that I did was to plant my own almond tree. I am not afraid to be an activist. I have signed up with people like Mark and others, using my "vote" as my voice. I am active with local groups such as slow food, and Washington State Tilth, our local farmers market and attend all the local meetings... I think one person can make a difference, and should.

Personally I think $$$ always talks and I refuse to buy products that don't meet the standards of "food". And I join those organizations that need numbers to build a voice bigger then one.

I think it is one of the reasons for the HUGE growing success of things like CSA's, and farm clubs and the like.. They keep farmers from having to go to the bank for $$$$, and having to jump through a lot of "hoops" that go against what they know as farmers.

I think MaryJane has the right idea.. and that is we make the biggest changes by 1st us doing what is right, and then we teach someone else and they teach someone else and so on and so one (you will see this a lot in the sisterhood).. I think the biggest waves start with a ripple and they build momentum.

Personally, I would love to see every farmgirl commit to spending $20 and joining the sisterhood, and going through the program getting our "general farmgirl requirements" out of the way, as a ways to say, LOOK I am committed to the "farmgirl way of life" and to my "sisters"~ and from there we all know that when one of us "breaks out" Like Dawn is doing with the MaryJane Maven's that she has the "sisterhood" backing her up. I have said it time and time again the sisterhood isn't just a "cutesy" program.. it is a crash course in being empowered.

I know for me.. I could hear about things like the CA Almonds and get upset about it... and go back to my old ways.. OR I could say OK.. I am committing to change ME, then my family, then my "world”, then the bigger community.. But it absolutley has to start with me. I have to put my $$$$ where my heart is, and then educated others. Teach my kids we don't buy almonds that are dead... we just don't, because we are committed to eating "live food".. Then I ask them to read books about raw food, and books like diet for a new America, and then my little "ripple" moves out into my circle of influence....

And don't worry I don't take it personal, and I totally "get" where you are coming from, it is maddening and really beckons one to make a stand somehow. Yet I know what I am doing, I know the shift that has taken place in my life and my world and I know that I am in action daily. There is a lot we can do. And it starts by educating ourselves, changing our own habits, then educating others, writing to local politicians, supporting farmers through CSA's, and farmers markets, setting up buyers clubs, partnering with independant film makers who have great investigative pieces out there and buy thier DVD and have a showing, join clubs, and so on..............and for those of us that write, or public speak.. then we speak and write and go back to our chapters and our farmgirl sisters and educate......

Hey Tina, I love your blog... I hope you will join the MaryJane Mavens as well... I personally am SO thrilled to see so many "sisters" step up and step out and say, "I am going to plant my own Heirloom garden next year and I am willing to learn from another sister to get it done". I think we are in for an awesome winter of learning much~ and how GREAT is that?

All I drink is almond milk.

What can I do now???

Have never seen truly organic almond milk either.

I know Blue Diamond and Pacific. Have never seen another company. Otherwise I'd make the jump in a heartbeat.

An no thanks on soy and rice milks.......too many carbs/sugars

Anna,
You can make your own almond milk (Just soak the almonds in water overnight, then add water, soaked almonds and some organic cane sugar (or honey)to the blender and then after strain through cheese clothe. Again the challenge is finding almonds that haven't been irridated (as it kills the live enzymes, which is the health benefit of the almond). It is best if you can find a source where you know the growing conditions of the almonds....Mark McAfee use to sell them through his website at www.organicpastures.org but I haven't checked latley. I also use www.azurestandards.com and www.andysmarket.com

I was reading topics on this site (www.farmland.org) and came across this link about food heroes. As we were asking "what can we do" I thought sharing what some are doing may be fun!

Interesting topic! One of the nut orchards I plan on growing organically is almonds. I'm surprised California is doing this; they're usually so forward thinking on social and environmental issues.
