Arlene,

I would also see if you could leave a box at the local grocery. Make sure you have fliers up or get some free space in the local newspaper, church bulletins, etc. The more people that know about the drive, the better.

At my church they have a slip of paper for specific children that you can take and buy for. It will say " girl age 5, barbies" or whatever their want is. It works really well. Last year I picked a 13 yr old girl who wanted hair care products. I also slipped in a sterling silver chain and pendant because all young ladies should have something special to open. It was fun shopping for someone, knowing you are getting something they really want.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Arlene- If your church doesn't have any children eligible, there would always be your county's Social Services Youth and Families division, they will definitely know who needs help.We also have a Children's Home society that we have helped in the past.My mother in laws church adopted children whose parents are in prison and just contacted the prison chaplain. There are also residential facilities for developmentally disabled children that might be interested.

Our church does an angel tree where you get the first name, age and size of the child so that you can fill their request. They are usually small or easy things but like some of you mentioned it's always nice to slip in a few extras.

Don't forget to let your community know...one year we had a contractor call us and ask how he could help and his suggestion was to buy Old Navy gift cards. We thought oh how nice, we'll save them for the "big" kids and when he came to drop them off he had bought one for every child on the list!We were just astounded but oh so grateful and his heart was full because he did something that made such a difference.

Good Luck, it's a big project but so worthwhile!

with a happy heart

Bramble,
My chiropractor's office does this same thing.
It seems so much more sweet and personal to know the name of the child and what they are truly wishing for.We like to add a little handwritten note inside.
Last year the girl we picked was also 13 and she wanted "fancy purple pillowcases" for her bed. It was fun to search them out and we added
a few extra purple things to the package, as well.

PS. oh yes! EVERY kid loves an Old Navy gift card!!!

Our community does something like the angel tree, it works great. We also have a list of names that are given to the local food closet, they each get complete turkey dinners.

At church we do a free gift drive. Last year 100 children (0-15) were allowed to come in and pick a donated gift for everyone in their household as well as their grandparents and one for themselves. We then wrap the gifts and put tags on them, and feed their parents and them a hot lunch (usually chili). Last year we gave out over 700 gifts. Not bad for a town of about 1100.

The gifts are all donated, and we chaperone the children to help them pick an age appropriate gift. (when we set up the gifts we also set it up gender and age specific (youth male, youth female, baby, etc.)
