This year for xmas we are doing almost all homemade gifts.
For some we are roasting coffee beans, making candy, homemade quilts, etc.
What I am looking for is an idea that my two preschool boys can make for their daddy.
Last year we took alphabet blocks and spelled out "we love daddy" and stacked them, glued them together with wood glue, then drilled a hole in the top and put a wire photo holder down in it, added a picture of the boys and viola a nice homemade gift.
I am having trouble coming up with another homemade fathers gift idea. Anyone have anything they have done in the past they care to share?
thanks! |

if he works at a desk, you can print out picts of the kids onto some of that iron on transfer paper, then iron it onto some fabric of your choice, hot glue it around an empty clean soup can and voila, a pencil holder!.. if you don't have the printing ability or if he doesn't work at a desk you could do some hand prints on a toolbelt.
you can be oh so smart, or you can be oh so positive. I wasted a lot of time being smart I prefer being positive. |

What about a valet tray, where men can put their keys, change and wallet in one place to keep it organized as they empty their pockets at night. Use those shallow 1" deep shadow boxes from the craft store that have three spaces. Let kids decorate it. |

Hi ---I just saw your posting. Hope you're still following. One of the best Dad's gifts that we did was when I recorded my 4 year old son singing a song for his daddy. I came across it years later unexpectedly and played it---and to hear his little voice again brought tears to my eyes. It's something special to both my husband and I as we didn't have a video camera at that time. OR if you have a video camera---a special made just for Dad would be great! Happy Holidays!

if you have one of those 'paint your own pottery' stores near .. or even if you have to travel to it .. they could make him a big dinner plate and mug .. a friend of mine has a set done by his two sons and he uses it every dinnertime .. and they are so very proud and grin from ear to ear when they see it! |

The 'paint your own pottery' store is such a good idea for all farmboys! Kate and I are busy making scarves for all our farmgirl friends and family. And we have been brainstorming and brainstorming what to make the farmboys, because it is so much more fun to make something!! So we decided on the pottery too because our farmboys (my wonderful husband and her boyfriend, my wonderful brother) can never have too many coffee mugs, as they seem to always misplace them! So, we are headed to the new little pottery shop here in Moscow to do the same. Great suggestion!
Someday I'll make my husband a quilt. A dear friend is pregnant with her first and I think I'll do my first quilt for her first little one for Christmas, as a baby quilt is not quite so daunting. |

I wish we had one of the paint your own pottery shops near here. that is a great idea for the boys. I am having a hard time coming up with an idea for my almost 14 year old couch potato nephew too. It needs to be something I can easily mail. I tend to get him gift certificates usually and feel like it is such a cop out. I am making most of the gifts this year and want to make something fun for him. We did make him and his dad (my brother) marshmellow guns one year. (sort of a blow-darts thing with mini marshmellows) that was a big hit. We have done rubber band guns in the past too. I found a fun storebought gift for both my brother and brother in law and I am making aprons, embroidered dish towells and knitted cotton dish cloths for the gals on my side of the family..but that nephew is my hard one. It will be easy to make something for his 5 year old brother...THAT I can handle.

Does your nephew like to cook? A homemade cookbook with exclusively 14-year-old boy friendly recipes. Or, back to the gift certificate idea, maybe tickets to a sporting event or play or ice skating rink or ski hill to get him away from the couch!

Hmmmmm a cookbook isn't a bad idea..he may be into that..he is certainly into eating!!! The tickets are a good idea too...but not to ski or ice skate..he is in coastal calif where it would be three hours to the nearest skiing..and his parents dont' ski. I COULD make him a barbque apron (his dad is WAY into that) and a cookbook though..I like that idea..thanks so much Meg!!

I just remembered a homemade gift that guys seem to enjoy and thought I'd pass it along. A rice filled heating pad that can be made in a rectangle, square, really just about any shape would work. I've used flannel to make them extra comfy. Just thought I'd pass this along cause most guys are hard to make gifts for. Hugs, Luzy

The 'paint your own pottery' was such fun!! I spent all afternoon painting and painting and I do not consider myself very crafty when it comes to paints. But I really enjoyed it! What a wonderful gift to give, as I thoroughly enjoyed taking the time to slow down and enjoy adding a little color to my day. And I am looking forward to sharing them with my loved ones on Christmas morning.

Don't dispair if you don't have a pottery place! My daughter was given a tea pot for her birthday that came with special glaze type paint. You paint the design and then bake to "fire" it. It is beautiful and was a fun project. So I'm thinking I bet Michael's or some of the other big craft places may have the paint? Plain mugs are cheap...Have fun!
Jenny, if your nephew is a reader, those clip-on book lights (so one can read after "lights-out") are nice and not too costly. Sharon

Sadly, he isn't a reader. I would have a hard time with that (one of my own kids NOT being a reader) but he dosn't have an example to follow. If that were the case it would be easy. ALL of my kids get books on holidays...even the grown ones (heck..especially the oldest!!) I love the idea of the clip on lights for my own kids though..they would love that!! I will have to look at Michaels next trip to Provo and see what I can find in the pottery type stuff..that just sounds fun!! I have to tear myself away from Barnes and Noble first though..haha
