I just wanted to share that 1500 women, men and children (and an 82 year old grandma I know) joined together in Anchorage yesterday to let the world know how they feel about a new political choice. We are women, for the environment, against wars and not for this choice in government. Women that organized this rally had their lives threatened publicly. Yet this rally was attended without fear of political or neighbor backlash.

The reason I'm posting this is because I'm not sure if it will be in the newspapers and how proud I am. It is strong women across time that fought force feeding and being chained to the wall to vote in the women's suffrage movement. We have stayed behind during war and political strife. We will not allow our country to be poisoned with mining and corporate political poison.

So that's my soapbox today! No negative responses today....... we all have our own belief systems. Stand up in your communities, vote,

Thanks for telling us about this. I have not read anything about it in the Sunday papers so far . . . will search for some coverage.

I agree -- women do need to stand up and be heard!! Too much is at stake.

I am so glad to hear this. Sometimes we don't hear about the smaller efforts people are making to try and save our environment. Bravo!

Thanks Jo!! It for sure won't make our newspaper - there is a lot going on - good and bad - that we never hear about. It makes it hard to make informed choices, but I think it is our civic responsibility to be educated.

Thank you for sharing Jo! I know what you mean, there's an awful lot that doesn't get covered by the (local) media.

And if it's okay with you, I'd like to post this from last night's SNL for a little levity:

Hey Jo - I am so proud of you - thanks for sharing - the slant that the news stations cover things not cover things is shamefull. After the DNC week here in Colorado and then the following ballon convention I am just ready to climb into a hole - We have wondered from the mark - way away from the mark.

Stay well, Stand up, Be counted and please everyone no arrows - it is America - land of free speach.

Side note - Jo when you have a chance email me of site - do not wish to disturb any down time.

Isn't this not allowed? We dealt with this last week or so ago. Do we have to go through this AGAIN this week? I'm sorry, this was all over "Across the Fence" about not allowing to say something either positive or negative or anything to do with political matters.

I just believe if it's not right for Frannie in KY to speak of her political background - it's not appropriate to bring this up again.

Well I'm confused, sweet wonderful Frannie is not even in this thread, why bring her up? We got people rallying for what they believe in--on both sides. What's wrong with that? Relief is just a click away. JoAnn

I know Frannie is not in this thread. Only a week or two ago, this type of thread was brought up and Frannie also told of her political background and people didn't like it (which I have no problem with her doing, btw) -

It started with a pro-Palin thread - which people didn't like - someone said it shouldn't be posted because of the rules here. it was taken down. Then there was an anti-Palin thread - which people didn't like - someone complained - then that was taken down. Frannie gave her political background - someone didn't like that - and so forth .........

I had no problem discussing political issues with someone who doesn't agree with me from the start (you can trace it in past posts) but, apparently, that can't happen here.

So okay, the rules are to refrain from having political threads - so don't do it. People are going to get hurt - so please respect Mary Jane's wishes.

sorry Sweet Brooke, I took a liberty because the news in the lower 48 doesn't speak for all alaskans, I feel silenced here. Do you know how it feels to be a woman silenced in her own community? It is a terrible thing, a very lonely thing, I was rejoicing because I didn't feel silenced anymore. It was about rejoicing, not about politics necessarily.

You need to know that in this place right now terrible things are happening, peoples lives are being ruined. It's like a hurricane, but an emotional one. I have never experienced anything like it before. You won't read it in the newspapers because it's about a huge machine that creates politicians, it's about people that infiltrate a place and work to destroy innocent people. So this is not about politics for me right now, it's about human suffering and the community it is dividing.

I love to quilt and sew, bake pies, embroidery and everything else that exists here, but I am also a very bright, involved woman in environmental concerns. I am here to protect Alaska from mining companies, oil companies that would destroy everything in their wake. These industries can happen if they are done responsibly. My job as a wife and mother is to see something left behind for your children and your children's children. If I do not have a conscience, who will, will you?

Dearest Carol, please close my thread now, I have taken liberties and I apologize. I meant no disrespect to Mary Jane or anyone else. Where is the sanity, civility in our world right now and where can you express yourself without exploitation.

The sanity in our world right now is in the hands of people like Mary Jane, but also people like you Jo. I strive to be someone like you and someone who just might leave a worthwhile impression on a younger generation as well, an impression that might involve material sacrifice and does not include greed...for the greater good for all. We must never give up, there is too much to lose that can never be recovered. Information is power.
My two cents...

Jo, I thank you for this. It was not done in a gossipy way or ill-informed...these are just facts that are out there. I see no harm in any of this. You certainly weren't ude to anyone and there are moderators out there somewhere so if they think something is not appropriate, I am sure they will let you know. Women NEED to get involved and stand up for what they beleive. Being a "good girl" and keeping quiet would never have gotten us the rights we enjoy today so I personally thank you!

Hello girls.
Unfortunately, lilwing is right - we blocked the discussion a week or so ago where Frannie talked about her political background (also not in a gossipy way or ill-informed) because it quickly got into an argument about political views. There are many forums on the Web where you can talk about your political views until the cows come home (or don't), but this isn't one of them. People have very strong opinions about politics and religion which tend to alienate those on the other side of whichever fence they're on, and in our experience it just leads to arguments and hurt feelings. Please refrain from discussing those subjects on this forum.
Thanks!
Carol
