I've been bugged (pun intended) by these little moths for some time now in my home. Sometimes I leave the door open, so I though that a couple came in every now and then. I would kill them and not think too much about it. They would fly right into my face, get into my food...one time one flew up in my nose. I opened my storage room door and found several flying around! I probably need to get one of those 'bug bombs'...the ones that spray and you leave it for several hours with your house shut. Any other suggestions other than hiring an exterminator? I think I know what happened. I bought a bag of bird seed some time ago and stored it a metal container in the storeroom. When I opened the bag outside, a bunch of little moths flew out. I didn't bring the bag back inside and threw it out. Probably some of those little buggers escaped in my home.

UGH!!! I hate that kinda thing~ There was a thread earlier about natural remedies, I need to see if I can locate that! R

I've read that if you put a whole bay leaf in with the birdseed that it keeps the moths away.

Hi Judy,
It sounds like these are a grain moth. They are a real pain as I had them. However, I found a product called "Revenge" moth traps at the local Farmers Exchange store. No stink or mess - just open the little cardboad package and set it on top of the fridge or in a cabinet. They are attracted to the little square sex hormone sticker and become stuck to the sticky paper on the cardboard and die and not reproduce. Revenge is not expensive and is the best thing around to get rid of these pests. It solved my problem real quick. Good Luck.

The bay leaf sounds like a good idea! I'll do that...put a couple in the metal container. Tina, I googled 'Revenge Moth Traps' and they are a great idea! I'm definitely going to try that, as I already have the infestation. I like that they are safe around food and don't emit the toxicity that a bug bomb would. I'm placing my order as I write...lol! Yes, the bay leaves really work! If you put them on your shelves in the cupboards it will deter moths, creepy crawlies, from taking up residence. I use them religiously and haven't had a bug problem in years! The bay also leaves a faintly pleasant clean scent for an added bonus. If you put them in with your flour or seed just don't overdo, one is plenty. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at well this works.

If you keep bird seed, pet food, or any type of grain based people food for very long, it helps to put the food (sack or box) and all in a sealed bag and then into the freezer for 48 hours right after you get home from the store. The little weevils can come into your house with the cardbord packaging or the grain. The deep freeze treatment kills any eggs that are hiding in the packaging. Sage :)

Update....Well, I ordered the 'Revenge' product online and they worked great! I bought three packets (two per packet) and set four in the closet that held the seed. The closet had a zillion flying around in there, and I left the door closed. The other two were in the kitchen. After a couple of weeks, the ones in the closet were filled with dead moths and none were flying around. All gone! Thank you again for the suggestions. :)

Don't forget to replace the Revenge product when it's time in order to get the new ones. After about 6 months of these traps, all of mine were gone.

Oh geeesh.
You have moths and as of this afternoon, WE have ladybugs yea. 
Note the enthusiasm.
Thought we had escaped the plague this year. At a balmy 71 today and high 60s predicted for tomorrow, looks like the vacuum cleaner will be permanently parked in the back room this week. yuck
But hey, I can sort of tolerate these kinds of pests and thank my lucky stars we have never had a roach infestation. |

Good luck getting rid of those moths. I never thought about them being inside a bag of bird seed. I'll be careful to keep mine stored outside in the garage. Thanks for the warning.

Yeah, Dawn, that's how it started for me. It would be better to store the bird seed in your garage. The moths are gone....but now I have beetles. The body is flat and wide, and it's about a 1/4 inch in length. It moves very slooooowly. My neighbor complained about these beetles in her home, so I believe other people are bothered with them as well. I live in a townhouse, so I'm attached to other units. This type of beetle begins with a 'b', but I can't remember. Maybe someone knows?
