Top o' the mornin' to ya, mavens! (More top for some than others - time change issue and all)

I'll be popping in and out with postings for the next little bit as I try to bring everything we've posted to some kind of order in my head. Yea, I know, "good luck with that one, Karen!"

First check: I'm trying to figure out who's in charge of what. This is what I have so far.......
Dawn - Mama Hen
Amy Grace - Secretary / Seed swapper organizer
Annika - Librarian / Websites, books, etc. (Where to go to be in the know)
Teresa Sue - Badge badger / Wealth of information from personal experience
Me - How to and related info organizer

Did I leave anyone out? Are there duties without an organizer? Maybe we need a database for that.............oh my! Lions and tigers and bears........sorry got lost in my favorite movie ever.

MHO: In the excitement of getting things going, let's make sure we have people that are getting duties they are passionate about. For example, I could have volunteered for seed-swapping duty but it does not float my boat to have to do that level of organization. On the other hand, finding massive amounts of info and making it available, now we're talkin'! So for awhile we may have duties to be filled until someone says, "Me! Me! I want that job!" or people like.........well, I can't find the post now but someone was looking for a role to fill.............. Anyways, it just feels like this thing is going to be huge and the more solid planning we do laying the groundwork, the more it will pay off down the road.

Having said all that and after re-reading most of the posts, I think we should have a blog devoted to the heirloom mavens and have links to Tina Michelle's site since (1) her's includes more than heirloom topics and (2) Dawn said she would love to be the blogger. Anyone that would be more than welcome I'm sure, because again, this is going to be huge and Dawn, my deere, I think this will hit a point where you will need help with the basics and you can oversee and contribute as you have time/energy (oh my goodness you have energy)/etc.

Later..........

God bless -
Karen

I know that through blogger you can authorize more than one person to be an author of the blog. So Tina could, if she wants be an author of the Maven blog. Dawn would just have to add her.

Sounds good to me. Like I've said before, the more we put it out there, the better! Funny thing happened thing morning: I had an old boyfirned call me. Its not what you think, we have remained friends since breaking up in 1990! He thinks its hysterical the change in me. So I was going on and on and on about this project and he was really quiet. Then he's like: "Boy your not the same old Dawn anymore are you? You are a force!" He was really proud of what I'm doing. And I told him he'd better start paying attention to his food. This is a guy who I know will talk about this to other guys out on the golf course....and when he tells his beautiful wife about it, she will take it to the hospital where she works. So I'm telling you now ladies, it pays to have big mouths!! Make it a point to talk or read heirlooms everyday and it wont be such a chore!
Karen: I agree, everyone should want to do something that they enjoy doing. If they dont want to have a job, but want to learn thats cool too. I dont want to force anything on anyone. If something gets to be too much, then the rest of us will back her up.
Tina Michelle: boy, didnt think you'd be talking to me this much after you asked me to write for stliving huh? You have a dynamo in your hands. And you talents (combined with hubby's) are wide and honed. I am glad to have a star networking element like you here!

Okay, I'm finally back to just the posts on this page. Picking up the loose ends on all the previous pages would put me so far behind you'd never see me again.

Amy Grace, I love the seed-swapping information clearinghouse idea. I was trying to figure out if it should go in the seed-swapping area or how to section. I'm thinking it fits your nest better than mine since people could see other mavens' experiences with it to determine what would work best for them from what's available. Were you volunteering to take that one on or do we have a duty waiting for a volunteer?

Okay, just realized I'm charging through the china shop again. I have the best intentions, mavens, but I just have this need to keep things from being splattered everywhere in my brain. A multi-tasker I am NOT.

Dawn,
I loved that story, thanks for sharing. How awesome that you are seeing the change right in front of your own eyes. There is a certain excitment that comes when those that have known us for a long time, see the growth.............Seems like you were ment for "such a time as this".

Dawn, I would like access to the blog so I can post the database info. I found "Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening" on my bookshelf. It has a short list of seeds that are easy/medium/difficult to save. That's the kind of thing I'm thinking goes in the How To nest.

Oh crumbs(!).........there was something else I was going to write but Gussie was adamant about going out and now I can't remember what it was. I'm off to D's now to help her out and then I shall return.

Here is a table with some seed saving info, such as seed longevity and such, just something to look at.

http://books.google.com/books?q=slow+food&source=web
And a google searched book list on the slow food movement
Seems like a lot of study this winter =)

And some more books from the slow food movement from Amazon
http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=slow+food+movement&tag=googhydr-20&index=stripbooks&hvadid=1149146501&ref=pd_sl_13hl0i424a_b
indeed, more study!
I will be looking up heirlooms next. Once we have the hen house we can start link and book lists

Somehow I knew once I stepped out of the shower there'd be a whole 'nother page.... I was just thinking that I've lived in this area of Ohio for 7 years now. Not once in 7 yrs have I found anyone with similar interests as me. Oh, I have friends, but its different. One, who looks to junk, garden, and create still looks at me as if I'm off my rocker when I talk about MJ's.... how cool is it that this brought us all together??

Ok. Someone tell me how to add authors to the blog... I can decorate it, and write, but technical stuff just makes my eyes glaze over....

Karen: I googled Whole Foods. The closest one is 97.01 miles away from me! Sigh...there are times when living in the boony-ka-loonies doesnt pay. They are close to Columbus, I will try to go when visiting my pop this wknd!

Wow Mavens!! I was only gone a day or so and so much has happened!! I just checked out the blog..Beautiful!! I too, am interested in the BBB, where oh where can I get more info? Do we have a spot yet for all the web links? My brain gets a bit dizzy trying to locate everything I need to check out. I think I read about having regional groups..are heirlooms specific to regions or not? Being in Indiana there has to be something here that I can do...my brain is storming... I will start with the county extension office see what they can tell me about local heirlooms and go from there. Sorry to hear about everyone who has been under the weather, hope you are all on the mend as it sounds you are!!! I agree with you Dawn--this is so cool that we all have such common interests!!

When I stand before God at the end of my life I hope that I would not have a bit of talent left and could say “I used everything You gave me”.(erma bombeck)

Suzanne Ashworth's "Seed to seed " is another good book to add to our libraries, if you don't have it already. I've heard nothing but good things about it. I am about to order it myself along with the book by Lynn Coulter on heirloom seeds...my splurge for the month =)

oh crumbs all over the floor.....................I just typed a post and it got lost in the internet black hole after submission. Here's the basics:

Annika, you rock, chick! You have definitely found the right nest to hatch a wealth of info for us.

Dawn, there are huge sections of the country without a Whole Foods. But stay alert. When we were in Asheville, NC a year or two ago they had a really, really nice local Whole Foods-like store. They're doing a lot of good organic things in Asheville and it's surrounds.

Maybe that could be a badge-ish thing for the henhouse. Go on an expedition to find heirloom/organic/slow food/etc. resources within a 50-mile radius of your house. When I went to the slow food website that Rene recommended I discovered not only the monthly meetings in St. Louis, but there is a farm they visited or are planning to visit that's no more than 15 miles from my house. I think there's more out there than we realize. It just isn't that well known since it's a grassroots movement at this point in time. And we all know how invasive grass is so look out, world, the mavens are a-comin'!

Really need to nap now. I could hardly keep my eyes open the first time I typed this. Won't tell you how many times I've had to retype this one since I fell asleep holding a key downnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn Oops! did it again..........................................................

God bless -

Wowzer, I go to work for a few hours and you'all just keep adding pages.
I would be honored to be the official MJ's Heirloom Mavens Badgebadger. But, I will not wear the mask. ; )
Sorry, it's been a long day already and I might as well admit to you'all right now, I have a warped sense of humor.
I'll start doing the research and we will officially start as soon as the hen house is up and running.
Something else I'm going to admit to is that I'm a WSU Master Gardener. I've told Annika this, basically I don't feel it's a big deal because all they really teach you is how to look things up. Sure, we do get to have some of the cream of the crop profs from WSU and the UI(Idaho, not Iowa or Illinois)lecture us, but frankly most of them are boring as rocks. I also have very strong feelings about the land grant universities, how they are government and big business controled and their part in the agricultural mess this country is in. With that being said, I will do whatever is in my power/knowledge to help this group soar because it is a Cause dear to my heart.
Now I'm off to my other job. I'm also the groundskeeper for our small town cemetery and I have people to mow.
Your Servant,
Teresa Sue

Some places I've found will let you buy heirloom seed in bulk if people want to grow a LOT of something, or go in together on an order.

I'd help with the sisterhood fund as well.

good gracious..I'm gone for a wee bit and here it is several pages more.
o.k. I can be an occasional author of a topic on the blog and would enjoy that/the doing research and so forth is up my alley.and yes, as the gals mentioned my personal blog is a mix of quite a few different things..I think having the one that Dawn set up as a "straight on topic" blog serves the purpose much better.
But I of course will gladly let folks know the link over to the Heirloom mavens blog though.
And I'd like to contribute to the writings/info from time to time.
