I think it'll work out great. We can all add our various bits of wisdom and all gain so much and in the process, learn so much from each other. Every heirloom we manage to save, the planet is that much richer for.
I haven't worked on the list of links yet, I need to know if we just want them alphabetized with descriptions or by topic? It'll wait til tomorrow when the Maven herself is back =) I'm going to learn how to harvest and save apple seeds. I'll become Annika Appleseed ;). I'm determined to save some of these tasty near wild apples around here.

http://www.organicconsumers.org/monlink.cfm More to chat about. Wow! don't get me started, I'm already mad as a wet hen! I have so much to learn, the more I read, the more I don't know and need to read more LOL! I'm going to try to hit Amazon and buy a few good seed saver and heirloom books. I want to at least have a rough idea what I'm blathering about. I have a lot of room in my life for improvement and direction. I know that I want to be published one day and now I have a subject to work on besides my fiction that I toy with. I am eager to see where we are in a year, this is such a brilliant idea (Thank you Rene!) and a timely one as well.
I'll shut up now =)

Glad to hear you are feeling better Rene. Annika here is my two bits worth on apple seed. From what I understand apple seed is usually not true to the parent tree. Apples must have a stubborn instinct to survive because their seed is always changing. If you really like a particular apple and you and want a tree that will give you that kind of apple, you are going to have to do a grafting. Here is a site that offers many, many heirloom apples and other fruit, but it's mostly northern climate. I've ordered from them and I like them. It's St Lawrence Nurseries www.sln.potsdam.ny.us What's really nice too, is that they have charts in their catalogs and tell you all about the apple and what it's use is and storage, etc. They also have very good instructions on planting and what you HAVE to do to keep your trees alive. When I plant my heirloom fruit orchard on our Idaho place they are who I'm going through. Don't expect any dwarf trees tho-not heirloom. These are the reallly big old fashioned apple trees. Annnnd, if you love roses here is a place to get heirloom roses, I found them when I was trying to find just a plain old fashioned rosa rugosa for huge rose hips, www.heirloomroses.com I'll warn you tho, their catalog will literally make you drool.LOL. Warmly,

Just wanted to add for those of you that don't grown from seed...Seed Savers Exchange also sells 'start'. Of cours you don't have the same variety as you do in their seed, but it's still heirloom.

Rene, are you doing okay today? Sure didn't expect to find that news when I signed on this morning. You be careful, girl!
Mama Dawn, how are you doing, my dear deere? You've had so many shape-ups in your life lately - not by your choice -
Amy Grace, you get my vote - and I'd love to see a picture of that greenhouse when it's done. We want to do the same thing, just haven't gotten our act together enough to get it done. I'm hoping for next weekend. Martha Stewart, huh? The woman continues to surprise me although she's into "beyond the everyday."
Alee, I read somewhere (maybe on this thread but I jump around so much I don't remember where) that you use the ground for the floor of your greenhouse. Just saw in a magazine a HUGE greenhouse that does the same thing and thought of you. It's a great idea! Also love the "How To/Helpful Hints" idea. That's kind of up my alley so if everyone's okay with that, I'd like to be in charge of that. Kind of an ehow for Mavens. It could also include related topics - kind of like "here's some other info you might want to know about ______" since it seems we're also interested in the broader topic of organic, etc.
Annika, I vote for including bulbs, etc. If it's heirloom, I think it's our responsibility to keep it going. Links + descriptions - I love you! Will check out the http://www.countrysidemag.com/issues/90/90-2/Jerri_Cook.html link when I'm done posting.
Wow, you mavens are amazing! Look at all the territory that's been covered and we haven't been at this a week yet. It's a little scary to think about what will be happening by this time next year, but oh, sooooooooooooooo exciting!!!!!!!

P.S. Are we still looking for someone to organize the swapping activity? Alee, I can understand why Dawn picked you because you are really good at it but you definitely have a full plate with a serving of school added to it now. I know myself well enough to know I'm not the person to do it. Is there someone else out there that lights up at the idea of organizing the seed swapping?

OK, here are some blurbs from the http://www.countrysidemag.com/issues/90/90-2/Jerri_Cook.html page that I love:
Greenpeace chides, "Monsanto-no food shall be grown that we don't own."
Terminator Technology promises to be a big money maker for Monsanto and its subsidiaries. Plants are genetically modified so they won't produce seed, or if seed is produced, it is sterile. With this maneuver they are guaranteed a continuing market for vegetable, fruit, and flower seed.
Six companies Du Pont, Mitsui, Monsanto, Syngent, Aventis and Dow control 98 percent of the world's seeds. These companies are opening research facilities and acquiring local seed companies and farmland on every continent, and they can't do it fast enough.
As consumers are losing the freedom to choose what they will buy and grow, thousands of varieties of garden seed are walking the plank, straight into the abyss of extinction. Consider this, in 1981 there were approximately 5,000 vegetable seed varieties available in U.S. catalogs. Today there are less than 500, a 90 percent reduction.
My favorite part: All it takes to form a seed saving club is for one neighbor to pick up the phone and say to another, "Do you want to trade some seeds this year?" There you have it, a seed saving club.
Imagine if one neighbor called another neighbor and that neighbor called yet another, and so on. The next thing you know black gardeners and white gardeners, southern growers and northern growers, farmers and city folk, church goers and non-church goers, would be united in an effort to prevent the extermination of thousands of varieties of seed. What a beautiful thing it would be.
Before you could shake a dollar at it, the landscape of the nursery trade would change. It's the age old law of supply and demand, if no one wants patented hybrids, then they become unprofitable in short order. The reigning corporate kings of the gardening game would be forced to take their ball and go home, leaving consumers free to choose a more sustainable pastime.
Okay, ladies, get ready to rock the world and make our ancestors proud - not to mention future generations!!!

Karin, I love Countryside mag, I have a subscription. Who ever controls the food, controls the world. I don't what to control the world, but I sure as heck don't want Monsanto to control it! Yes, Mavens, lets go for it.

Karen - I think the swapping activity is what I volunteered for - not sure though so Dawn, let me know. It sounds like Annika is totally on top of the links and readings, and Teresa Sue seems to have a whole bunch of knowledge in her head:) This is really exciting - it seems like we all have a lot of energy for this and lots to contribute too. A true collective effort. Annika - I come to Moscow once a month or so to shop at the co-op - maybe we could get together and work on stuff as things progress. And thanks for the link to Baker Creek - have heard of them but hadn't checked out their stuff yet. I think non-vegetable stuff would be fine - there are some great flowers in the Seed Savers catalog Amy Grace

My husband was in the house as I was reading the web page and he said, "Monsanto - it's the evil empire!"

Sorry, Amy Grace! That's what I get for putting my big foot/mouth/typing fingers/whatever in someone else's territory. Take it away, girl.

No worries Karen - I am not actually sure what I volunteered for so it will be a surprise:) I agree about Monsanto and the evil empire. I have a degree in International Affairs and one of my anthropology classes covered Monsanto/intellectual property etc. It is scary for us but at least we have some options. This issue is downright life-threatening for people in developing nations. It just seems so contrary to what I grew up believing in. Amy Grace

Thanks, I would even be willing to carpool with Amy Grace if she's interested. We could meet at Oakesdale or wherever, not sure which way she goes down. Warmly,

Hey Karen, Good morning, thanks for asking. I am still really sore, but staying off the meds. I plan on laying low today.. Boy one little fall and I feel 90.. that cannot be good right? lol
I was at the farmers market when it happened.. surrounded by all my best "friends", they were laughing so hard that a local DR. who was clear across the park made it to me before they could get a grip... Geez.. talk about needing a better class of friends LOL...
I have another exray today~ but I think all I can do is allow time to heal it..
Can I say, what an amazing group of women we have here.. It is easy to look at corporate giants and feel a little "small and helpless".. until we start standing on each others shoulders and really see how big we really are....Mavens is the perfect name.................
You all "overwhelm me"...Thanks for all you are...............and are willing to be.
