Karen,
On the topic of "finding local growers" these are two of my favorite places to look. www.localharvest.org and www.foodroutes.org... for any of us that want to grow for retail or are thinking of building a CSA you might want to register with them. For any that are thinking about raising grass-fed animals, or are wondering HOW you may want to also try www.eatwild.org

It use to be that the Extension offices held classes and organized Homemakers clubs, I have been doing some research on these and sadly they went away, Lucky I suppose for us. But if you are a chapter leader I would encourage you to let your local extension office know about your chapter maybe leave them some hand outs... You will be surprised at the amount of ladies you will be connected with.

Good Morning Dear Mavens! It was a bit quiet last night. I am just glad that you are going to be ok Karen, I've grown rather fond of you =)
We will have a grand time at BBB and will likely be the terrors of the event, slappin' bumperstickers on people and waving brochures...ok, maybe not that terrible, but a fun lot never the less

Good Morning ladies! Just wanted to let you know I will be a bit absent for the next few days. I will be checking in at least three times a day, but I have a LOT to get done. I have a friend coming to visit, my mom coming to visit, an accounting test today that I am still studying for, and lots of homework due now through Sunday.

So my question for today is:

When do you start sprouting your seeds for spring? And are you going to winter garden in house or greenhouse?

usually here I begin gardening around Valentine's day..that's when things like potatoes and onions can be set out here.
and when I usually start any seed indoors.I like to use an area almanac for my region to determine best 'start by" dates and try to go by that as much as possible.
A lot of the "old timers" here usually start gardens around Valentines though..first moon in Feb.
--------
this coming year I won't be having a garden at this home..in fact I have been busy the last couple of days working on trimming trees, and things that need doing in the yard from leftover summer chores..it was way too hot in the summer to do quite a bit of these things so now that cooler weather is here we can whip things back into shape.
--------
since we are scheduled to put the sale sign up in Jan. I won't be gardening here this coming year at this home.(and oh my am I going to miss it something fierce...but I will be planting a few flowers in beds "for looks")
I am crossing my fingers and toes though that this home sells rather quickly and that I will be able to have time to put in a small garden or grow things in pots at a new home. ..by Spring next year.
or mid year at least.
the good thing about Florida is you can usually grow things through til about mid November without any worries of freezing out.
but from late December to about March you always have a chance of a freeze..and a frost date usually right around Easter.
----------
anyhow sorry to be long winded in my reply.:0)

Morning Everyone! Glad to see everyone is on the mend. I must agree that www.localharvest.org is a great tool. I have used it many times to find different product in my area.

To answer your questions Alee- I start my tomatos and peppers in the green house around the first week in March. The other seedling don't get started until a bit later, around May. Yes- I do garden in the greenhouse throughout the winter. My DH has built me a heated bed in the greenhouse and I actually can grow things in it. This weekend I will be planting peas, green onions, and kale in it. There is already 4 rows of lettuce and 2 Tobasco pepper plants (cabbage too) in it. Also I keep some herbs in pots and they will winter over in the greenhouse.

I always grow my carrots in a raised bed (to keep the moles out) and then harvest them all. This year I planted a 2nd crop in July so I could winter over the carrots. I have never done this before so I am pretty excited to give it a try!

I am anxious to hear if anyone else is gardening this winter. I'll check back later-I gotta get some chores done!

Ok. Karen, as for my Dawn-ism...that was supposed to be 2-3 DAYS afterwards....everone else got it! Right?

My computer has been hacked. I am in the throws of downloading worm fighter as we speak so I too willbe a little absent!

Poor Teresa, first it was just me, now its Me and Karen! I-yi-yi....

Corrine: what a treasure we have in you! So knowledgable with all the fancy french lingo...!! Ha! Between Karen-ese, Dawn-isms, abbreviated Maven/MJ talk and a little flourish of Francois' (I probably butchered that!) no one will understand our message!

Amy: why are you going to FRance? How come the only place I get to go is the chicken incubators? NOT FAIR!

Update: I am fine. My caboose, however, is a lovely shade of yellow-ish green, sooner blooming into a nice indigo/violet mix I'm sure! (Bruises sound nicer when you give them rightful color names...)

Alee: I asked for a hoop house for my b-day or Christmas. I am hoping to start sprouting in January. NOt that I really know, I'm just guessing that if I start in January, they should be pretty tall/leggy by the end of March and maybe I can move them to hoop house in April...in the ground by May.

No one has gotten back to me on Spring Fling dates for May.... I'd like your imput please!

C-ya!

I'm thinking of turning my spare bathroom into a growing center for heirlooms. I need to get the shelving and all, but I could do it and water is right there, so it would be easy. I don't know. I don't think my sweetie will go for it though. =/

This is just a lovely book full of encouragement to read and it has a nice resource section in the back. If you happen to see it, give it a look. I'm enjoying reading mine...One more book for the list

Dawn I hope you rescue your computer from the hackers =(
Dawn, I'm pretty poor and it all depends if I can make the Spring Fling on that faithless hussy...money, so I'll just have to see. I'd LOVE to come, I really would.

Well its been a tough morning. I THOUGHT I was protected....but was not. $80 later and I think I stopped it before it got worse. I was on this forum when all of the sudden my screen lit up with WARNING! WARNING! DANGER WILL ROBINSON! It was even telling me that the MJ site was dangerous! I'll say!! .... HMV's and CPS's...

HAHA... yea, I do like to have a good time. I am a bit of a show off so I'm sure I will keep ya'll in stitches.... I do the stupidest stuff sometimes... I amaze myself. Hubby just shakes his head and says..."that's my girl!" ;0) He has no control.... hehe!

TM: I will look up and see when I should start stuff here in Ohio. I'm itching already!

Has anyone else browsed their SSE magazine? HOLY HOTCAKES BATMAN! I am only about halfway and I think I used up all my yellow highlighter.... like Amy says we should consult eachother before ordering because I sure as heck don't need 250 lettuce seeds!

Off topic: I am making sauerkraut. I've got it fermenting in my kitchen. Its been 3 weeks, can I put it in the fridge??? Man, it stinks!

Dawn, six weeks of fermenting before it goes in the fridge. It shouldn't stink if it's sealed air-tight. And you're not supposed to break the seal (lift the lid, whatever) to let it get exposed to air while it's fermenting. Not speaking from experience, just reading about it before I start mine. Want it to be in the middle of fermenting while we're on vacation.

And by the way, unless I do something weird like dislocate a rib, I'll be at your get-together. It's just a (long) day's drive for me. Then you have to find a place to put me (oh, help me now, girls, help me now).

I did order another catalog ..from one of the sites I shared..starts with a D. and an L..oh gosh..forget the name right off hand.(supposed to be a really old seed house) Anyhow..and I just got a Stark Bro's catalog in.
----------
Spent over an hour today outside craning my neck looking for the little hummingbird that visits our bottle brush tree this time of year.
Got a few cool photos of it..will post those on my blog later this week.
-----------
Going to order some more catalogs probably in the next few days.

My goodness. I think my head is spinning with all this reading. It was a crazy busy day here yesterday. We had so much to do that I didn't make it on here. I guess I shouldn't wait until the last day before our homeschool coop to make out the 270 memory cards for the kids. What was I thinking.
Karen and Dawn~take care of yourselves!!!
I can hardly believe what all of you are getting accomplished. I need to get my SSE catalog. I have to go back through the pages and find the info.

I'M FINE! I'M FINE! I'M FINE! I was just being a smart-aleck thinking that Dawn would make me sleep with the chickens, hang me from the attic rafters, who know where she'll put me - it's my deere Dawn! I have not had a sharp pain yet today so things are looking up. Yesterday I had a runny nose ("thank you for sharing that, Karen") when I was laying on the chiropractor's table and every sniff sent a searing pain through my dislocated rib. Today I sneezed and no pain - I mean, NO PAIN - at all. So Dawn, my lovely drama queen, everything's okay. (Yes, she really did call me NOW)

TM, like you I don't have the SSE catalog either. Like you, I ordered one from another site. And like you, I don't remember which one it was. Mine doesn't get mailed til around December so I didn't bother to file the name away - just thought I'd let it be a surprise. No help am I, huh?

Okay. I just emailed Sunny as I dont have access to the "coop" yet... Have we decided on what we wanted to do about the member bio's? Do we have a mission statement? Am I shouting out too many orders at once? I am working on the brochure. And reading that Heirloom magazine I got. i will mail it out to whomever wants to read it next.

To the best of my recollection (another one of my daddy's favorite expressions), we're combining our putting our gardening "experience" in our bio's so we have an idea of who to go to for info, who's at the same place we are, who we can lend a helping hand to, and to give us some direction for the next step or two we want to take.
[Added: Oh yea I remember now. We're going to do a "what heirloom means to me" kind of thing on them too - kind of an explanation of why this topic touches you personally.]

Mission statement - I don't think we even have a draft of this one yet (or did I miss it, mavens?) but this is one I personally don't want to rush into. My concern is that we don't make it too limiting but at the same time have enough direction that people get what we stand for. I think an more detailed explanation taking off from Lora's "Save Our Seeds - Feed Our Future" bumper sticker would be a good place to start. "MJ's Heirloom Mavens are dedicated to preserving our heritage......" Next person take it from here. Just looked at the clock and have to get ready for the next bone-cracking session.

God bless -
