Marcy, if you have some rhubarb seeds to spare, I would enjoy it. Please let me know what you want for them, I have some french heirlooms, leeks, tomatoes, salad, beans, squash and a special watermelon that is bland to eat raw but makes a sumptuous jam. Rene, thank you so very much for sending me the book plate and the book mark from Lynn Coulter, now I have to wait for our container to arrive to put them into her book, Mavens mail is the best mail ever. Next week, I will send another list of the Mavens, we are blooming and it is wonderful. Please check your planting zone, I have to correct Cheryl and Gail's ones and yet a lot of them are missing. Amy, glad you made it back, so sad I've missed you. Tammy, I will email you latter this week about the leeks. Have a great sunday Mavens, Corinne

Corrine, I am so thankful to you for keeping up with our growing garden of gals....hee hee.... say that 5 times fast....
Rene' I dont think I thanked you either.... so THANK YOU for that envelope of farm goodies and the book plate.
I have T-shirt info posted in the henhouse. We really had to watch pennies. This came out of Lora's pocket and she is donating the money to the maven fund for seed bank start up. With what we have in the account and what we will have after Spring Fling and the tshirts, I think we will be able to purchase a good amount of seed to share among us next year.
Happy Sunday!

Sorry I have been so out of the loop again. Wedding coming up in June and I just have sooo much keeping me hopping. We are hoping to get some of our garden prep done before too long. Hard to get days where hubby and I are both in the same place at the same time. He is really into this SF gardening. So plans are under way for that this year. We will probably be late getting started with everything that is going on, but I figure some is better than none this year. Will check in when I can.

Kristen and Corinne--I will send out those seeds this week. And if you have some extra seeds just surprise me!
Its warm and sunny here. Saturday the DH and kids made me a cold frame and then Hannah and I promptly planted some seeds. Not real sure if anything will grow but it was great to get into the dirt. DH and Devon turned the garden mixing in all the critter poo while Hannah and I cleaned out the barn and coop. It was such a nice day and we got so much done!!! I know the cold weather will show up again before spring stays but I am enjoying this.
Rene I got the book SFG and planned out the garden. I know he said we can plant whatever in each square but I am having a hard time getting out of that row mentality any suggestions?

I am looking to get my garden going and am interested in any heirloom seeds anyone can spare. I live in Louisiana and am wondering if seeds that do well in other parts of the country will also do well here? I am a novice and would appreciate any advice I can get. Thanks.

Rene', I love the cold frames you built(saw them on your blog). Were they very hard to build? I have a bunch of old windows which some are going to the chicken house, but would love to try to make some cold frames with the rest.
I have seeds sprouting in my raised beds!!! It's lettuce sprouting up everywhere and I'm so excited. I also have a shallot starting to sprout to. Inside I have Basil, sunflowers and tomatoes sprouting up. I am so ready for warm weather.
Do you need anything special to participate in the live garden chat that happens on Monday night? I'm new to all of this! But would love to chat with everyone.

Rene, I just went to your blog and saw your cold frames. We just had all new windows put in and I saved all the old ones. I will have to make cold frames now. Thanks for the inspiration!
Marcy, I am looking forward to getting those seeds. I think all gardens should have rhubarb in them. It's so old-fashioned. And hollyhocks, too.
And Tina, I am jealous! Green beans already! I am usually the first around here to have green beans at the farmer's market. I need to get going. Or the weather needs to get going. I am just waiting for the ground to dry out here after a weekend of rain. Then we can get it tilled and planted.

Hi Mavens!
Kristen I'm going to be making some cold frames, too... not this year since I suspect I'm going to be moving, but for next spring certainly.
Rene you're such an inspiration!
Several of my hollyhocks are sprouting - I decided to go ahead and sow a bunch indoors to try to get them to bloom the first year, since I may not be here next year to enjoy them! If anybody remembers that ugly spot by my neighbor's yard that I'm trying to cover up... well... methinks that's where the hollyhocks will go! I realized that if I put up a little mini-fence with a piece of garden lattice and two posts, I can hide all my "stuff" like bags of mulch and so on behind it and grow flowers in front of it. Score.
So far my winter sowing is going pretty well - my peas are about to bust out of their container! And the seeds I started indoors and subsequently decided to quit fussing over them after they got fuzzy... well, they're sprouting after all.
Can't wait to get some things into my square foot garden but I still need the sun to move over a little more.

The weather says to expect an inch or more of snow today...WAAAAAA!!! but the robins have arrived and are chirping happily, so spring will be here some day soon.
Can't wait to till and plant! I'm gonna have to buy some starts this year, but they usually have heirloom starts at the farmers market so I'm happy.
My dad is doing better and his broken arm is healing, all be it slowly, but I think he is going to avoid surgery this time. He can do more things on his own now so I'm home for now.
Anyway, hi ladies! sorry I've been gone so much...we are coming up on lambing and kidding on the farm here, so it is going to be a busy spring as usual. But I wanted to dash through and wave hello!

Oh, no, Annika, more snow! :(
Quick question - my azaleas seem to have been struck with a fungus - they have black spots on the leaves! They are just now starting to bloom so I'm afraid to mess with them.
Anybody know a good organic, non-toxic rememdy?
I also want to move them to the backyard where they'll have morning dappled sun instead of afternoon sun - do I need to wait till they're done blooming?
Thanks gals!

Hey guys, does anybody know how long it takes hibiscus seeds to germinate? I'm trying to start them inside and don't know much about them.
Also does anyone else have trouble with watering their seeds that are in those seed starter domes? I put water in the bottom part and it's like it doesn't distribute through the whole thing. So some get to much water and others don't.
I've got seeds sprouting like crazy inside and out! YEAH!! I had to transplant my sunflowers from the little cell packs into peat pots. I'm hoping I didn't start them to early! Tomatoes of all kinds keep sprouting every day. And all my beets have sprouted. Guess I'll have to learn how to pickle them! Hope everyone has a good night! Tammy

I planted more lettuce and spinach yesterday. Had to put chicken wire over the top to keep chickens out. The lettuce bed is right next to the compost pile and they like to scratch around in there and end up in the bed.
I got 5 lbs. of Blue Lake beans and 5 lbs. of field peas and about 25 lbs. of white potatoes the other day. I just got all I could because he may not get more. Now we just need a dry garden. It's supposed to be dry a few more days then a chance of rain but very little here. I have 75 lbs. of potatoes and 12 lbs. of onions that need to be in the dirt asap. They are not heirloom or even organic, but from here on out they are going to be as organic as possible since I don't use any fertilizer other than my animal's manure and no chemical sprays at all. So I don't feel so bad.
Tammy, did you sew the beets directly in the ground? And what kind do you grow? I have gotten the Bull's Blood and they are so good. And of course the good ole Detriot red.
My hubby wants to make one of the cold frames today. We'll see. The boy has too much time on his hands. He needs to weed eat the strawberry field soon, too. It's about time for them to be uncovered.
Happy plantin', ya'll! Kris
