Good afternoon mavens,
I ws busy this morning putting a tapr coverover my chicken yard. IOt is supposed to rain & possible snow this weekend & the darlings need to be able to get out for fresh air. That done I repotted with Dh help a few house plants that were house bound.
Stirred my "mother" & passed the recipe on to a friend. Dh wants to go to the movies this afternoon. Has anyone seen The Benjamin Button movie? I think that is the one we are going to go see. I will let you know...
Dinner tonight is planned Chicken Cesar Salad & the rest of my sourdough bread...* not to heavy I will have to have popcorn at the movie., I guess that will be my lunch...ha!
I mailed out all my valentines except two that needed out of the country stamps will get those today.
Thanks all for entering my give away... on the barndoorcreation site. Will check back in later.. Havea great afternoon... Cheryl

hey gals..waiting to find out if a certain house is "the one" for us or not...am keeping my fingers and toes crossed and saying my prayers. if so it would be on .43 acre which is still a bigger yard(almost twice the yard) than here and a much bigger house also.and absolutely perfect for my outdoor photo business plans (It has a gorgeous gazebo in the back yard)/ perfect for my gardening plans..the yard is a virtual "blank slate"/I'll know more in a few days.(I don't require a lot of land to be able to grow a slew of things)..I can grow more than enough for our family and then some in quite a small area... in either regard..I'm still in the packing up stage..getting the kids room packed up/cleaned out today as much as is possible.Of course even when we do find a place we will have to sell this one.hopefully we can find an aggressive realtor who is eager to get the place sold...and maybe, just maybe I'll be able to at least have a fall garden planted in a new home this year. Please keep us/and this particular house in your thoughts and prayers as this house is just so nice and we'd love to live there.

Amy, your experience with (not) planting the seeds last year is one that I have most years with flower starts that I buy. Until last year! Robbie had the garden worked up for me and our starts had been sitting under the tree almost two nights. He came home one night and I said, “I want to show you something.” It took him a few minutes. He kept saying, “Something looks different. What is it?” Finally I got, “YOU PLANTED YOUR FLOWERS!” So I have 100% faith that you will have a gorgeous garden this year.

As I was going through this week's posts for the newsletter I saw what I wrote yesterday and thought, "WHAT?" If the starts stayed in their containers two nights I wouldn't have felt so bad. They were there for two weeks at least. Of course that's less time than in years before which was closer to a month - at which time DH would take me out of my misery and dump them on the compost pile.

But after last year, things are looking up. I'm a maven now! Better times ahead!!!

Tina - hope the house works out!!
Cheryl and Karen - I am lucky enough to have Bachelor's Buttons growing wild in my "back 40" - more like 1/5 of an acre but any way - that was a nice surprise my first year here. Plus a bunch of peonies and allim.
Annika, Diana, Teresa Sue and Rene - is there a day of the week that works better for any of you as far as maybe meeting for lunch?
Dawn - I am so glad you will be coming for the BBB!!!!!!!!!
Finally got my SSE catalog today, very nice!!
Now to make some decisions:( "what do you mean I can't order them all??"
This has been a kind of stressful week - problems at work again, I've been grinding my teeth. I would like it to be done with but the person in question is going to drag it out. Can't we all just act like grownups?
Okay enough belly-achin'. Gotta figure out what to make for dessert - it was going to be bread pudding but Annabelle ate a whole loaf of bread off the table so I need a backup plan
Talk to y'all soon

Yes, Karen I am and outhouse hollyhocks! My Gram used to have hollyhocks growing in her back yard. Does anyone have beeding hearts or honeysuckle growing? I don't know if they will grow here but I am wanting to try. Another memory og my Gram.

I too would love to grow the bleeding hearts/don't have them here right now. I don't have honeysuckle either, but I do have carolina jessamine which smells heavenly with gorgeous yellow flowers.

hey there..I'm not sure if you would actually call it a jasmine..it is the state flower of one of the Carolina's..I'm thinking it is South Carolina..anyhow..the vine does not grow as aggressively as a confederate jasmine..it is much easily trained to a fence or arbor and has a softer scent, and has a bright yellow trumpet shaped flower, the bees love it.grows a lot slower than a jasmine vine. I'm thinking that I will have an arbor of this at the new house. We had an arbor of confederate jasmine here but it was quite the hassle to keep it trimmed back and out of the trees as it was super aggressive..we eventually had to take down the arbor and dig out the jasmine as here it just wanted to be a bit too invasive.
The Carolina jessamine on the other hand... you just have to trim the off shoots about once to twice a year to keep it looking great...and trim it into shape a little.
------------------
p.s. thanks to those of you keeping us in your thoughts/prayers about the house.I've been busy today cleaning out the kid's room/packing things up from there.
Next on my list is tackling the remainder of the garage and the linen closet in the hallway...then having that big garage sale that I keep adding things to the pile for just about every day.I'm already to the point when I will be glad when this is behind me.

I've heard that it can take anywhere from 3 to 7 yrs for wisteria to begin to flower.
here's a "fact sheet" about them.

I so underestimate our Maven Power. Even when I get the bulk of the newsletter together, the amount of ground we cover still blows me away. As I flesh out the newsletter each week, I go into it thinking "well, at least this was a light week" and then.........well, mavens, you are simply amazing.

Go.......Read.......Enjoy

And set your alarms now (Cheryl ) for Maven Chat Night with Lynn Coulter. As TS said, even if you don't chime in, just sit in the background and absorb. This is an amazing opportunity. Thank you, Rene' and Teresa Sue!

God bless -

P.S. The Mother Earth News mentioned in the newsletter also had an article called "Finding Great Garden Seeds." It highlights three companies: Johnny's Selected Seeds, Seeds of Change AND, just for you, Rene', they devoted six wonderful paragraphs to Baker Creek and Jere Gettle.

Rene', first, be sure you actually want your wisteria to proliferate because they can become a major nuisance (written from personal experience). My dad planted one near our garden and it took over a lot of the plants and trees around it. They shoot runners from the roots so they should be planted by themselves so that the area around them can be kept cut.

I love the pictures in country magazines with the wisterias hanging down from the trees. They look beautiful hanging from the tree near the garden - until I remember that they're choking it.

Last spring, we drove through the neighborhood where we go to the farmers market and there was a beautiful wisteria plant in one of the yards. Robbie said, "If you're going to have a wisteria, that's how it should be done. Plant it where nothing else is around it so you can keep it under control."

Having said all that, maybe it needs to be moved away from the house so it can spread its roots. It may just need a good foothold.

God bless -

Good Saturday Morning All-

Not sure what the plan is today, I do have some chicken chores to tend too. This is the first weekend in forever that DH and I haven't had things going on so who knows.

I received my order from Baker Creek yesterday. I am now ready seed wise for spring! Sometime this week the onions will we getting started. When going into the greenhouse on Thursday, I looked down at the 2 pots that designate the entryway and there were chives coming up! They are about 3 inches tall. I also noticed that my garlic is starting to poke through the mulch which means it is about 6 inches tall! Somebody has spring fever-can you tell?

Karen- Great newsletter once again!

Tina- Hope you get the house!

Rene- The deer ate my Wisteria-Sorry I can't help you.

Amy-There is always one co-worker that is a pain. Hang in there.

Everyone Else "HI"

Gonna run and get to the shower before anyone else, I am going to enjoy the HOT water!

Have a great weekend.

Lillian
