HI Ruth, isnt it "funny" how one little book can impact us the way it can? I have had several such moments this past year.

Tina, I can't tell you how many times I have had to pack up and it isnt any fun.. Wish I was closer I would come help you :(

Dawn, Hope you make it to the chat. I have another appointment, but I am going to sneak in I think.

Hey Karen.. where are you?

Hi Mavens- Another busy day here. I just got done putting in my seed orders. Thank goodness that is done, it really is a chore on dial up!!! Later on in the spring I wll probably order more lettuce seeds, but for right now I am stocked up. I don't know if any of you are going to venture out and try some new lettuce, but if you are I do have a few reccomendations. I really enjoyed these last year- Forellenschuss, Yougoslavian Red, Oak Leaf and Mascara.

Ruth- I saw those cherries in the store too and it was so hard to resist, but I too will be waiting for the local cherries. Maybe I'll make a cherry pie with the ones I canned last year. Now if I could only find a local Banana. Not likely here.

Rene- How is the Raw diet going? I am interested in hearing how that is working out.

I am going to try and make the chat tonight- Nobody better touch my internet this time!!!

Morning everyone!!! We did get some snow but not enough to stop people from moving>> on the way home from Michigan last night there were 14 accidents!!! Mostly slide offs. The old record set only one week ago was 11. I wish people would just slow down. It might take longer to get where you are going but you will get there!!!

Ruth, I go through the same thing everytime I go shopping and I too wish there was a local banana tree!!!! :)

Tina--I had a great idea for my teen drivers!! A yellow bumper sticker that simply states ROOKIE..race drivers have to have their rookie stripe for their first year and I think mine need it too!!!! Is there a minimum order amount or is this even possible????

I am going to organize my seeds today and see what I really need. I have been talking to my dad about heirlooms and he is interested but lacks the space needed. He lives in a trailer park and its only him and my mom. He loves his plants-keeps him out of moms hair!!!

Karen--I got that set of CD's last summer and really havent made the time to go through all of them!!! Such info!!! I think Baab is a perfect name for any and all lambs!!! Not too many animals can say thier names!!!!

Have a great day everyone and I will be thinking of you all tonight!!!!
And its supposed to get real cold this week..so the smaller cats (winter rookies) will get to come in and tonight I have to make sure the rest of my critters are tucked in!!!

Good afternoon, mavens! I am still here, bruised and battle-weary from shopping today but I'm here. Robbie's off today (he works a compressed schedule and gets every other Monday off). I was so thankful he was here to unload the car. Got the perishables put away and hopped right on the computer to check in.

The MEN CDs are wonderful! It's cryptic - a list of every article in each issue with a small blurb - but what a motherload, er, mavenload of information. If I wasn't so beat I'd post a couple of things right now but they will have to wait until I rest up a bit.

Count me in as another banana-lover. I was raised on a farm where I could have all the veggies and fruit I wanted and didn't like any of it except the "weird" stuff. I traded my ice cream for spinach when I was in elementary school (I think I told that story before). Don't like tomatoes, watermelon or strawberries. I like the taste but when I eat them they give me goosebumps. Well, the melon and berries do, the tomatoes taste like metal to me. I run very acidic.

Last week I made Annika's West African Peanut Soup (you all really have to try it - it's wonderful!) and the recipe called for peppers. I KNEW that I had frozen some of ours last summer but couldn't find them. I told Robbie, "This recipes calls for bell peppers but they aren't in season and I'm not buying any until they are." Of course, we'll eventually have plenty in our own garden next year. I may not like tomatoes but I love bell peppers, especially on pizza. heh heh heh!

Okay, gotta put these tired feet up and read a little. Maybe I'll take the laptop with me and browse some more in the CD collection. Marcy, I think we could start at opposite ends of the collection and wouldn't even meet before the year was out. So much good stuff in there. I definitely will be posting pertinent info as I plow thru.

Hi, Rene'~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Good afternoon mavens,
I am waiting for the mail delivery, Expecting book from Amazon and another seed catalog. I feel kinda off today. no energy and have an earache.. Dh just went to his routine Dr appointment & I requested a strawberry milkshake upon his return..I sometimes crave weird stuff like this when I am feeling under the weather. It is so pretty outside & the sun is pouring in the patio window. Thermometer says 60 degrees directly on the back porch.. Think I will go out & soak some of it up & watch my chickens from there. I do plan to connect with "chat tonight". Sure feels like afternoon to nap...after a cuppa....off here til later

Hi Lillian~ Thanks for asking. It is going well. The biggest hurdle has been changing habbits and settling in to something "new". But for the most part I am finding my way. I cant believe how much better I feel, lighter more energetic. As FATE would have it, I heard that there is gal in my community who actually "teaches" RAW food living in Tri Cities, so I have enlisted her help as well. I find that as long as I have a mapped out plan I do well.. if I DONT then I derail rather quickly.. SO.......... Most days I am eating an 80% raw and 20 % cooked, allowing me to eat rice, or beans or fish....

My routine to date looks like this: First thing in the AM I drink Hot Water and Lemon juice ( it makes me feel like I can have my cup of joe, without actually having my cup of Joe)...then I take my green drink ( either Barley or wheat grass)... I then get my little "spud" ut the door to school and put in the old excersise videos ( I have several I like and I trade them off)... then I hit the shower and come back for some juiced carrots, spinach and apples.. YUM (so much better then it sounds)... about 11:00 I make a large salad with organic raw nuts in it.. or seeds....Some days I will add some smoked salmon or shrimp... most days I dont need to now. at about 2:30 ish, I want something sweet so I have a fruit salad, or some raw milk yogurt or kefir with fruit. At about 5:00 I drink more green drink and 6:00 p.m. I fix dinner for the family.. I have a HUGE salad, but this time I allow myself a little pasta, or rice or something.. but usually only about 1/4 C.

I have made it a habit to allow myself a cup of Teeccino in the evening... My favorite has become the Vanilla Nut. it has organic carob, organic barley, chichory, organic dates, almonds, organic figs and vanilla bean.......YUM. then before bed I drink a fiber drink.. I use garden of life or Hallelujah acres products.. Just because I like the companies.... OH the only thing I use for salad dressing is Flax seed oils and fresh Organic herbs, sea salt and ground pepper. You can really change the taste of things depending on the herbs you put on it.

Well that was more than what you asked, but................there it is.

Hey, maven friends! Well, I slept for three hours and would have no problem staying in bed and sleeping until morning. I am beat, beat, beat! The heart is not only willing but craving to be at the chat tonight - the body, however, may override. So if I'm not there, be assured I am with you in my dreams. Lillian and Cheryl, would so love to chat with you since I haven't had that pleasure yet.

Rene, you are going to town with the RAW, girlfriend! I fell off the green drink wagon for a couple days (maybe that's why I'm so tired) but I'm back on it again.

Will check in tomorrow if I'm not at chat night.

God bless -

Hi Mavens!

It looks like we won't be moving until Fall! Yay! So that means I can start planning my garden! I am SOO Excited! Plus I am going to be moving out unpacked boxes from the other half of my sewing room (the part with the door) and moving my desk with Computer, Printer and sometimes Sewing Machine in there. I am also going to be building some book shelves-

Why is this important to me as a Maven? It's a Eastern facing room with HUGE glass windows to the North and to the South! I am going to start sprouting seeds and I might even grow some tomatoes and potatoes inside in re purposed garbage cans(bought new of course cause using old garbage cans to grow food makes me shudder)! Since I will be Doubling the space that I have to use I think I can get away with more plants! Doug hates those rooms, so whatever makes me happy, right? :D

Good morning, mavens!

Welcome, Diana! Like you, we won't be starting our seeds for a few weeks either. Couldn't if we wanted to since we won't be ordering them 'til this coming weekend. Hubby's in charge of vegetables, I'm doing flowers and herbs - with crossover input allowed.

Alee, explain more about the potatoes in tubs. I read a little blurb about growing no-dig potatoes using hay and tomato cages. I need to find it again as I was getting a little bleary since I'd been reading for a few hours by that time. I'll post the info in the henhouse when I find it again.

Okay, off to structure my day.............

Hi Karen!

What you do is put a small later of dirt in the bottom of your garbage can and plant your seed potatoes. As they sprout and grow, you keep layering compost, shredded newspaper and or straw over the shoots. So they keep forming more and more potatoes as they grow up. You just keep them growing and wait for them to indicate that harvest is ready. Then you can pull them up all at once because the growing material was kept light or if the can is outside you can tip it over and dump the growing medium out into a garden and collect your potatoes that way too!

Hello dear Mavens, sorry to have been away for so long but I had a lot to do here and the internet connexion hadn't been good for the last week.
Still no date for our move, we are playing it by hear.
Still only once seed catalog has made it up to now and anyway, I think I have a bit of everything for a very small garden this year.
How have you all been ? And what is new in your parts of the world ?
Have missed you lots, hopefully this week I will be able to chat more often.

Alee, thanks for the potato tip! Our soil is still very clay-like so this may be the way to go with our potatoes this year. And congrats on the delayed move. Isn't that such a relief???

Cheryl, hope you're feeling better today. Yesterday must have been a day for the drowsies.

I managed to check in about half-way through chat hour and poor Tina was out there by herself. Sue popped in to say hi - and maybe more after I left.......

Corinne! So good to hear from you, my dear! Are you all packed up with nowhere to go? How frustrating. You have been missed, dear maven, more than you realize.

This week I'm going to try something new re: the DOE. I plan to check in three times a day: morning, noon and afternoon (approximately 8, 12 & 4 CST). Maybe I'll get more done around the house that way and not get sucked in while I'm "just checking things out."

Mornin', Ralph! Rene? TS, hope you're having a productive cocooning time.

Hey, Rene'! Life's a bit slower here finally. Taking some time to at least plan in my head what needs to be done to make life work a little better for me. Even if the plans don't get carried out right away it still helps to have a plan!

How's 'bout you? Life treatin' you ok? How's the raw food plan going?

Afternoon mavens, I do feel better today .. Good night sleep 9 hours and oj.
Mailman just brought my new Seed to Seed book and the organic Gardening in Cold climates.. Guess you know what I will be doing tonight.. Just came back from the Farm Co-op had to buy a dung fork.. Those messy chickens.. I love them.
Also Stopped by the organic market got some more honey and some organic flour plan to make some MJ bread..
Thinking i may need to do some major amending to our garden plot.. really got some clay soil here. It is still too early to work out there, covered with snow.. but I will be ready when it is time.. Going to start some seeds in the sunroom I think. & today I bought some paperwhite bulbs to get Spring started in my kitchen window..

Hey, Alee, I was showing Robbie your potatoes-in-a-garbage-can brilliance and another question arose - how big is the garbage can? Are we talking bathroom-size, kitchen-size or out-on-the-curb-33-gallon-size?

HI girls. I just thought I'd pop in now.... I have no clue as to when I might be on here again this week! So who's in for the big midwest winter storm? I think we are expecting another 3-5 inches on top of the 4-6" we already have and we have a major cold front coming in. Nightime temps are expected to be about 12 below for the next ocuple of nights.... this is what winter used to be like here in Ohio. Snow would fly around Thanksgiving and not let up until the first of March, now we get hit hard in Jan and Feb and the last freeze is in April. Oh well, I'm excited for the change... I like to see the snow clinging to the tree branches and icicles off the barn roof. I hope to get some good pics.

I see it's been quiet around here. We all must be nesting. That's good, let us draw inward and wrap ourselves in warm quilts, relax and dream about garden's and lady bugs. We will need to save this energy for our Spring Awakening. Then we will all stretch up to the sun like tiny blades of kelly green grass....

Alee, great idea about the potatos... You're freaking genius. No wonder you's a college student!! haha.

I hope that everyone else is doing well. I miss you all. I got to send out some chick catalogs today and wrote a little something in them.... hee hee....

Speaking of chicks, I haven't been here because I've been so busy. The phones are ringing off the hook and I think I talk to about 400 people a day. I dont talk much when I get home, nor am I on the computer as I'm pretty sick of it by 5pm!

Cheryl, I visited your blog... very nice. I really like the style.

Okay. I'm outta here. See? I'm all talked out. Love you guys!

HI Diana! So glad you stopped in!!!!

Well I can't take credit for the idea! I read about it on the internet! LOL But thanks for the Ego Boost, Dawn! You are such a sweetie!

I made HUUUUGE progress in converting our storage room into an office. I am super excited! I got a bunch of things condensed down and was able to get rid of about 7 huge boxes without getting rid of anything. Everything in the storage room is things we want (like Art that I haven't put out) or things we need (like winter gear) and books. But there were some mostly empty boxes packed by my husband that really needed condensed! I also set up a radio in there for when I am doing sewing and such!
