LOL..I've had strawberry jam before and know that they mix rhubarb with strawberries in some places but nope never have seen it growing in a field..it does look cool though and nope never have tasted it. I was reading that article I sent you they say its hard to grow in the south..bummer. now I wanna know about this stuff. Oh Dawn you don't have to send me any jam or anything..I'm just amazed that I haven't tasted it before now and I just turned 40 yesterday..it will have to go on my "must do" list though...ha.

Alee~ Thanks, I swear somedays I need you on Speed dial :)....
Annika, I love to can. My favorite part is decorating the jars and passing it along. I try to find out what colors the people have in thier kitchens and make the jars match ( how is that for...........well controlling)...hahahha.. usually I add some cute little wooden spoon or recipe.. anyway, I know this is SOO off topic.. but.................I was thinking of all the things we take for granted, like that old pear tree.. that has been there forever..... and it has survived without spray or man... it just "IS". HMMMMM!

Dawn, While I am totally engulfed in my ADD ways and totally off topic I wanted to pass this on to you. I think It was you who said you had been having some health issues (?) right(?) ...recently I met this guy named Dennis Weaver he heads up a groups called "change your food change your life", and he is "rocking my diet world".. He "introduced me to this Dr. Steve Gilbert. Dr Gilbert is a neurotoxicologist (Studies and treats Neurological disorders) caused by over toxicity....he has a website at www.toxipedia.org he is out of Seattle, WA. There may be info there that can shed some light on what your dealing with.
I know a little of which I speak. I have Lupus.. long story short, I am managing with through a wholistic lifestyle..... anyway, what did Karen call it PMJ???? (LOL)

Hi Dawn!
Okay so here is the story of my nickname so you can choose a pronunciation :D
My best friend in High School couldn't for some reason pronounce my real name Alyssa (Ah-Liss-Ah). So she she nicknamed me Alee, pronounced (Ah-lee). Well then of course my nieces and nephews when they were litter had a hard time so I became Aunt Alee, but the little kids made it sounds like "Aunt Owie."
But mostly, when I introduce myself to people I pronounce it "Alley"

Dawn when we lived in Ariz I didn't have any luck growing rhubard. It grew like crazy in Wyo and I've had pretty good luck with it here in Wash. It's pretty cold hardy and it's the first thing up and out in the spring. It's a very heavy feeder, loves to be mulched with straw, the straw helps hold up the big heavy leaves and keeps the moisture in. I'll use as much as one or even two bales under each plant. I got a new plant this year, can't remember the name, Ruby Red, maybe. I planted this one by the compost pile, I figure if any of that good stuff leaches off, ole Ruby will slurp it up,lol. It's supposed to stay red even after you cook it. Strawberry jam used to be my favorite jam on a hot biscuit, but once I made rhubarb jam, my heart was lost to it ; ) Dawn I'll go look on your blog for the bracelets.

Dawn, come on, Booger Green House? ROFL Oh, that is just too funny. Your bracelets are verra fabu, you'll have to email me your address so I can send the money for it. Can I have several colors in it instead of just one color? So who do we send the money to for our sponser a sister fund? Do we have 15 Mavens before or after the two new ones you mentioned? Okay 20 questions is over, I have to go make some torillias for tacos for dinner. Talk to y'all tomarrow. Have a good night.

Hey ladies!
Springboarding from a post that Tina Michelle posted- what if we not only grow heirloom fruits and veggies- but heirloom animals!
There are lots of great heirloom animals that are facing strain right now too. Think about this- modern cows have been bred to produce mass amounts of milk. Do you really need as much milk as they are currently bred? And pigs have been bred to be so lean that their meat has lost a lot of the flavor that heirloom pigs can have. Do you need a chicken that produces 10 pounds of breast meat? Or turkeys that are so big that they can't walk?
When Doug and I get our land I plan on raising meat animals and I will breed, raise and slaughter heirloom animals, even if that means I have to let the chicken hatch out more eggs than we take for cooking-at least in first few years!

I plan on doing the same thing Alee. I want a real farm, granted we only have 20acrs, but it's amazing what you can do on 20acres. I want everything I can fit on it, orchard, berries, garden, chickens, milkcow, you name it. I been thinking about the heirloom animals for a while now and I'm pretty sure I can talk DH into it. I'm for it, if the other Mavens say, "yea".

Alee- DH and I have already discussed that issue and when we start adding animals to our farm that is what we plan on doing. The only problem with that is sometimes the cost of getting and "old" breed or heirloom animal is astronomical. When a person is on a limited budget sometimes it is hard to do that. Kinda like it being cheaper to buy a regular banana opposed to an organic one.

Me too! Wait, I mean I want to raise heirloom turkeys also. We're close enough Annika that we each could get different breeds and maybe do some swapping. When you order poultry they usually have a certain number you have to buy. Something to think about.

Chickens? Turkeys? Now we're talking my language! You all know whats coming.... we have heirloom turkeys at the hatchery where I work. Blue Slate, Bourbon Red, and Royal Palm's. We also have a lot of standard breed chicks. Its: www.meyerhatchery.com. Browse through and see whats there. Last months issue of Hobby Farms had a huge article about heirloom pigs. Very intersting. Of course I'm all for it. An Heirloom is an heirloom. Plant animal or otherwise. I have tons of stuff handed down to me that works/operates just fine. Thats the problem with society today. Everything is disposable. I hate it. Teresa Sue: You can have one in any color you like. All I need is $2 for the shipping. Who should be our treasurer? Do you want me to hold it until we get a paypal account set up? And I think we have 15-17 Mavens as of now. I say 17 because as I scroll back through I count a couple more that said they were interested, but I havent seen posts. Ta ta girls, gotta pack to go to the big city tomorrow!

Teresa Sue, that would be so cool! I need to build a turkey house first, I'm looking at next spring...hopefully. I don't own the property I live on so I have to see what the landlady is open to. I like the wild type and black Spanish breeds. But I love all of the old breeds really. When I eventually get my own property I would love to have a good sized flock. To go with my heirloom garden and antique fruit trees =)

well..even if I don't have enough land to raise animals..I can always have free range chickens and definitely grow fruits and veggies for sure. and make sure that I buy organic meats that are raised the right way.:0)

don't know what we'll be able to find in Central Florida as far as land/home goes. we know that we want to be in a rural type area...but close enough in for convenience too.but the garden will be a must have.

Hey - too funny, my husband and I have been talking about heirloom poultry too - we only have 3/4 acre in town right now so probably we will have to make do with chickens. Our neighbors are great but they already put up with our very vocal bassett hound so I don't know about turkeys... I was thinking we would embroider the design ourselves on the badge - is that what you were saying Teresa Sue? Oh and eventually I would love to swap poultry with you and Annika.
I was thinking back to yesterday's discussion about Monsanto - not to turn us back to politics, but for me the telling point is that people who are saving seeds have very different motivation than large corporations do. Salespeople from those corporations may emphasize "people-friendly" aspects of their products but bottom line - they are primarily thinking about the bottom line. Their concern is for their share-holders, first and foremost. There is my soapbox rant for the day.... Talk to you all soon Amy Grace
