Hi All,
I just got my magazine and I want to make that greenhouse! I decided to do something similar on a smaller scale to put over the existing tomato and peopper plants that I have growing.
Has anyone done the greenhouse?

LOL! Yup! I sure did! I even got my "conventional" hubby to help. It sure makes it easier if you have a helper!
My biggest piece of advice is: use lots of duct tape where you have to poke the wires through the plastic.
Also, leveling the dirt a little at the site helps a bit too.
Overall it is very easy and relatively cheap! I love mine! It's great, though I think I will be re-doing the plastic as we did not use enough duct tape and it tore in some places.
We went ahead and planted in-ground in the greenhouse as we are renting and didn't want to spend money on raised beds.
I am going do lasagna gardening over the winter. I am going to put down lots of cardboard, newspaper, compost and such and next year we will have quite a wonderful spot for planting! I am so excited!! The greenhouse is lots of fun!

| Alee, how do you heat your greenhouse? And how do you keep everything from blowing away. I have had a couple of greenhouses and before I can figure out a reasonable $ way to heat it, it blows away. The greenhouse that I have now is in pieces. At least we found all the pieces after they blew all over 80 acres. |

Have you seen the directions in the latest MJ magazine? Very ingenious! Curved rebar is pounded into the ground to hold the floor down, there is also rebar to hold PVC that you bend in a half circle to help hold the shape. We have had some serious storms here- one even blew a roof off a mobile home and onto the next one. It has withstood all of those storms only a little worse for wear because I didn't put enough duct tape at the puncture sites.
Overall, when the plastic is fully on the greenhouse, it retains heat surprisingly well. During the winter I plan on composting the floor of the greenhouse, and once I put my seedlings out in February, I will probably put a lamp out there with a high wattage bulb to produce a bit of heat. However, the composting will provide quite a bit of heat, and any sort of water or dark painted buckets with earth will also help absorb thermal energy to be released slowly over time.

Alee, where did you get the plastic? Did you get 6 mil?
The compost idea is wht I was thinking about too for heating. Compost made of strw and dung. Manure releases heat.
I plan on putting up a mini one next weekend. A hoophouse style for right now to extend my tomatoes and hopefully get a couple of bell peppers.

Actually I went to the Pay Dirt Farm School hosted my MaryJanesFarm- taught by Sunny Cook. At the end they raffled off the supplies we had been learning with- supplies to make the full greenhouse. So I didn't actually purchase any of my greenhouse supplies-except with a raffle ticket. However, Sunny said she had gotten the plastic from Wal-Mart's garden center.

I'll check there tonight. I am just experimenting to see if I can stretch out this season a little. Dh and I will put up the one we saw in MJ mag next Spring.
I would like to start tomatoes and peppers in March. This greenhouse should enable me to change to heritage seeds and by pass Wal marts vegie section with the ready to go plants!

My dear husband, his brother and friend put up one of the greenhouses for me. My husband couldn't do it alone because he had a broken foot. I love it. I just need to work on what I want to keep in there. Unfortunately, I planted corn and squash this year and they were ruined by little pests.
Squash ladybird beetles ruined my squash and I believe the corn has corn smut. I also have trouble with earwigs. I hate them. I would love to know how to get rid of these pests. I am so sad about the garden.

I got a subscription to MJF....I hope my Magazine comes soon. I am wanting to see how the Greenhouse is built. I wanted to do it before it gets to chilly here. we are getting a nice rain storm now...Thanks goodness for the rain.

We plan to use the pattern in MJs for the greenhouse. I think I will do like you and put a pile of compost on each side, put some holes in the bottom of 5 gal plastic buckets for drainage, paint the outside of the buckets black to absorb heat..set the buckets in the pile of compost and put in some potting soil in the buckets to start seeds in Jan or Feb. We talked about putting 2 or 3 of the panels together to make it longer...I am anxious to see what we can do with it. Hubby loves to garden. I hope you all will let us know how the green house works for you.

My foe is slugs! Each year I have to place beer down in pie tins. I make dh dump the tins
I did go to wal mart tonight. Since we will have to wait till next year to make a permanent greenhouse, we went with the hoophouse style. I got some plastci 3.5 mil for just under $9.00 for 10X25.
Last night some areas around Billings had a slight freeze. DH and I will be putting this up this weekend.
