I am building a new home on my farm and would like your ideas on how to make my kitchen authentic! It is hard making a new house feel old. I have some ideas on my cabinets and sink but would love to hear some ideas about other touches or even see some pictures.

Mother Earth News recently, within the last two issues, had an article about farm kitchens with photos and designs.

I recently redid my house. Gutted and rebuilt the inside. In the kitchen I have a huge, huge pantry. It is heaven to store things in there. You may think of that. Double doors to the pantry. Shelves galore!!!!!!!!!!! Marly |

I say a HUGE litchen, with room for a big table like they used to have in the Waltons. One that you can eat, socialize or prepare on. |

Definately need a pantry! There are some great pictures in Laura Ingalls Wilder's Country Cookbook (see if it's at the library) of the kitchen that she designed and Almanzo (sp?) built for her.... too darn cute! Maybe a kitchen table or work table made out of barn wood.... oooooo.....

Wow, I envy you! If I could get rid of my husband the kitchen would be redone pronto as a "working" country kitchen! He is a very traditional kind of guy, after 40 years he still doesn't "get" my primitive likes...he lives for hunting and fishing so you'd think he'd "get" it... |

I know that Dover Books, one of my favorite publishers, publishes books with, if not blueprints, detailed plans of many styles of houses. If you go to their website and investigate I bet you can find a book about classic farmhouses.

Yes...magazines are a really good source if only to inspire your o ideas! You will see pictures and some of them will just grab you and maybe it's just one thing in that picture and them something from another one and VOILA...pretty soon you have your own unique design. I always wanted beadboard....can't get enough of that stuff! And cupboards at the bottom with little curtains draped across on twine and glass cupboards...freestanding. I have one old one with glass doors on top and then 2 drawers and then a 2 shelf cupboard with solid doors below. Check out Miss Bee Havens post on her old farmhouse "Got some HVAC" and she has some great pieces and isn't going to put in traditional cabinetry just "pieces" that she has collected. It's not done yet I don't think but the pictures of it just standing there looked SO COOL and I will definitely be doing that when I get my farmhouse! Good luck and let us see your progress! How COOL!!!!

I think it would be wonderful to have space for a little rocking chair in the kitchen just for you...a big single soapstone sink, vintage lighting over an old farmhouse table with mismatched oak chairs around it. Any chance of a fireplace somewhere in there? Some old ceiling tin somewhere. Vintage looking stove and refrigerator would be fun, but high-dollar items, I'm sure. Oh yes, definitely a pantry! Have fun, and post photos when you can. Linda |

Kelly, what an exciting and fustrating time. I too am designing out house so many choices, only so much room. I have made a number of inspiration boards, using clippings from years of collected magazines, anything that tickles my fancy goes on the board. I have a different section for each room of the house. Also I have picked up a few books on making your house feel good, good luck and enjoy creating your home.

Kelly - Last weekend, I bought an old book(orig.pub.date-1934, this is the 1955 ed.) titled "Household Equipment" by L.J. Peet & L.S. Thye. There is a chapter in there entitled 'Kitchen Planning'. It has some neat pics and good ideas I think I'm going to use some of myself. I can print if off for you and mail it to you if you would like to have a copy.

I've also found some pics online of different room styles I like, so not knowing what to do with them, I put them all together in a file and posted them to my blog, so when I'm updating I can look at them and be inspired.
