ALL BY MYSELF! I went out to water my chickens. I was pulling the hose out and turned around and noticed something moving about 6 INCHES FROM MY FEET! It was a copperhead! I must have stepped right over it it was so close. Thankfully it was facing the other direction! I was afraid to let the thing go though because then I would always wonder where it was. It was moving towards the pasture so I know I didn't have much time to react or it would be gone. I had to RUN to the barn and grab a shovel. I snuck up behind it and smashed into the back of its head with the blade of the shovel. I saw it's mouth open and venom actually swuirted out of its fangs a little! It was SOOOOOOOO creepy! Eventually it was dead. I put it on the shovel and walked over to my MIL's house where my hubby was. I went to the door and yelled to them to come see what I had got. They both came out and couldn't believe I had killed a snake all on my own! Richie was SO proud of me! My mother in law looked at me and said "Well, you really are a farmgirl!"

I wish I had taken a picture of it but I forgot and Richie had already thrown it into the woods! Bummer!

Yuk! I hate those things. My dad killed one in our yard when I was a little kid. You are one brave gal. I would have been running the other way!

Good for you, Julie. Do copperheads eat chickens? I'm not sure what size prey they go after, but it's just as well you got rid of it or you might have stepped too close at some other time and got bit yourself!

Holy Cow!!!! Julie- you are the bravest girl I know!! Ew. I hate snakes- with a passion and then some. I'm so glad it didn't see you. Yikes. That is one of my biggest fears- that I head to the hen house in the dark and encounter a snake on its way as well. If I do, I'll call your name!

It really wasn't near the chicken coop it was behind my house near the hose. I still can't believe I didn't freak out! The first time I ever saw a copperhead - about 7 years ago - I cried so hard it freaked me out. We don't see them around the house often so I was really taken by surprise. I just hope there aren't anymore around. If there are maybe they will smell the blood of their dead buddy and move on! I'm just mad I didn't get a picture!

Mercy me, that's the farmgirl spirit, we never know what we are capable of when the unexpected comes our way...there should be a merit badge for that kind of thing, shouldn't there!!! I am glad that you got him before he got you...Debbie

Julie,

Wow, I'm impressed! Is there a sisterhood badge you can earn for your bravery? The only snake I've ever killed was a little garter snake and it was quite by accident. He got done in by our lawnmower. I didn't even realize I ran over him-my son had to tell me. I got the "willies"-shows you how brave I am.

Julie!

Congrats! That takes guts! I am not sure what I would do! The one time I was faced with a venomous snake I ran into the cabin and shut the door!

Be careful around the woods as snake venom is still poisonous even after the snake is dead. I know a lot of people chop the heads off venomous snakes and bury them in a hole so deep that they won't be dug up by unsuspecting people/pets.

I agree with Bonne, you need a Snake Handler merit badge. We don't have any poisonous snakes here, but when I lived in Arizona for a while I saw them occasionally...

I wanted to tuck my feet underneath me after reading this! Snakes are a big fear of mine. Good for you for being so brave. I probably would have ran and yelled for someone else to take care of it. I'm glad that you saw it and that it didn't bite you.

Good job, Julie, though I can safely say I might NOT be a farmgirl afterall, if it comes to coming face to fact with copperheads!!! A black rat snake, yes, copperheads...not so much :) Nerves of steel!!!!

And I thought I was so brave for killing a scorpion that got in the house yesterday...but that was nothing compared to you girlfriend! I'm so stupid that when I first moved down here I was gardening and ran across what I thought were great big healthy worms...NOT....baby copperheads I found out later! DUH!!!! Thank God they were really babies and didn't "strike"...but makes me wonder now where the Mother was....someone was definitely looking out for me that day cuz I was sitting right in the dirt with them!
Okay....when I get my acreage I am getting chickens but are snakes attracted to chicken coops/houses? I will be in Northern, Illinois then and I know they have rattlers there usually by the Mississippi Palisades and they have water moccasins and maybe copperheads...not sure about them. But I really don't want to do anything to attract them either!
You go girl! Julie should be the next FARMGIRL of the MONTH!

You know...my father was born in Louisiana and raised in Hot Springs, Arkansas...he was TERRIFIED of snakes. He would actually pass out when he saw them on television on a nature program....it occurs to me now, why he never wanted to go back to Arkansas, Julie and Sandra!!!!

Eeekkkk! You are brave! I have fond memories of visiting my Grandparents in rural Arkansas every summer along with my cousins. Both Dad's would take us swimming in the nearby creek. One Dad in front, the other Dad in rear, BOTH on Copperhead and Watermoccasin patrol. And us kids oblivious to any danger!

Toto, we're not in Kansas any more!
