What are your family Thanksgivign traditions?
My family always played Bingo while we waited for the turkey to get done. We would have prizes, wrapped in paper lunch bags, that were saved year after year, tied with yarn. There would be a womans, mens and kidlings basket. We played it like cut throuat, it was hysterical to see us all go crazy for this game. I tried to get this stated at my house when the in laws come and they just odnt get into it. Just my family does. My mom and dad basted the turkey all the time with real butter, my mom would always tell the kids that the turkeys name was Tom, which is my dad's name. We all would laugh. He would retaliate with that makes you the 'old hen Peg', which made us laugh even harder.
Our dinner always included: Turkey, duh, mashed potatoes, real ones, gravy, candied yams, green beans, pumpkin and pecan pie with whipped cream and of course, canned with rigdes cranberry sauce. It was so fun for me as a kid to open both ends of the can and shake the cranberry sauce out. Now a days, the bottom of the can doesnt cut off, so your just shake it till it comes out......lol....

I wish I were a part of that family tradition. Sounds so wonderful. For Thanksgiving I cook a turkey, with the trimmings. We give thanks, and that is about it.

Every year about a week or so before the "day" my dh and I sit down looking back at the year and decide who we want to say an extra thank you to. As an example,one year we worked with a company that did our granite countertops and we enjoyed working with them so much and they were very professional and helpful from start to finish, so we baked ALOT of cookies and took them as a thank you to the whole team. It was so fun and they were so surprised...Debbie

We have gone for a more streamlined and lighter feast as years , tastes and health have changed. We ALWAYS make our own gravy and cranberry sauce and sometimes invite single folk that don't have a place to go over. We hold hands at the table and say everything that we can think of to be thankful about and give thanks for our sometimes crazy lives. We have our meal simply, often just turkey, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce and a good green salad or green beans almandine...yum! for desert we try to make something punkin' , not always pie, though I loved our cran-apple rustic tart that we did last year. It was good.

We always get together at my house and have a big dinner with turkey, ham, dressing and all the trimmings. We tell stories about the "older days". Now that we have our little one "Logan", he keeps us entertained without a dull moment. The we have another late dinner at my in-laws and that side of the family makes 4 times the size of mine. They are entertainment enough by themselves! LOL

The past few years we've been creating some new traditions due to the fact that some loved ones have passed on. Usually we'll gather at my aunt's house somewhere near the holiday and have a nice turkey dinner with all the trimmings and sometimes will watch a holiday movie, in between all the ballgames that is. We usually go out to a restaurant on the actual day due to relatives that have to work or that are on call.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday! My Gram always hosted it when I was a child. I was so happy when my husband and I bought our own house that my parents announced that we could host Thanksgiving. I have fond memories of cooking alongside my Gram.  She's been gone 1 year now, brings special thoughts to mind as I prepare for Thanksgiving.
Anyway! Every year we have a Pie & Praise at our church the night before Thanksgiving. Yummy! (We have some really good pie bakers at our church! - I should go for a crust lesson. )
The day of I send my girls out into the yard to find a branch from our tree. We place it in a vase in the middle of our table. Every person gets a leaf and they write down what they're thankful for. My girls (10 & 7) love to be in charge of getting everyone to write on some leaves and taping them onto the branch. After dinner we read from the branch.

We don't have a Thanksgiving Holiday here. But I always try to celebrate it, none the less. Maybe my love for the USA has put this into me, I don't know. I eat a little turkey breast, make cranberry chutney and have a few decorations.
Small but nice.

Our family is pretty fun and crazy so this year we decided we are gonna do the Cole family Turkey Olympics!!!! we are gonna play a bunch of goofy made up games and then give goofy made up awards!!! Then we'll eat!!!!!!

i don't have to many unique Thanksgiving traditions.... but it is definately my favorite holiday! my hubby and i have only been on our own for about 5 years, so we've tried to create our own traditions. we always invite and try to have people over, sometimes they come, sometimes they don't. even if it is just the two of us, we make the whole spread because i can't bear to leave anything out! i love all of the foods! so we have tons of delicious leftovers for days!
the day before, i make my pumpkin and apple pie. i have just started making my cranberry sauce from scratch, so i make that the day before, too.
on Turkey day we have turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, sweet potatoes, rolls (this year we've decided to make a loaf of homeade bread), a veggie (this year, green beans from our garden!), squash casserole (also my new favorite i began making not long ago) and the cranberries and pie! it is always the first day we have eggnog (from the store, i havn't learned to homeake it yet) with our pie after dinner has settled awhile. there have been many years when we take naps after dinner because it's so relaxing and comfortable.
the year before last, we had to celebrate thanksgiving early due to my hubby's work scheduale. but we decided to go into town and bring home a puppy from the shelter. so our black lab, Shelley, was brought home on Thanksgiving. she was introduced to our home during a time when it was full of wonderful sights and sounds! as i cooked, my hubby took care of Shelley, even taking naps with her on the floor! they were both pooped after having such an exciting day! so it was one of my most memorable Thanksgivings...
i suppose one of my traditions is to break out the nice dishes and candleholders and set the table up beautifully. it feels elegant and fun. light the candles, put on some classical music, and enjoy a delicious dinner! after i have everything set up nicely on the table, i like to take pictures to remember our feast and our thanks. afterword, take a nap or watch a holiday movie on tv.

I love thanksgiving. It's my favorite because that's when my family all gets together. We always had thanks. with my family and Christmas with my husband's.
My grandma made this dressing that was so good. She saved all her leftover cornbread, rice, biscuits. She let me start helping her about 5 years or so before she died. It was a great honor to know how to make it. I never knew she put raw oysters in it. I don't put them in mine. She always had fried okra, too. I always tried to sneak some and she'd smack my hand. One year she boiled the okra. I was not happy about that.
But the day after was our big tradition. Mom and I started this one. We'd get up really early and head to Savannah to go shopping! The men kept the kids. My sister started going later with us. So it turned into a girls day out. We'd be gone all day. On the way home, we always stopped at Dunkin' Donuts and got a sackful of donuts.
Now my parents come up here. My stepdad always cooked the turkey. He still does. All night long. He gets up several times and bastes it. It's the best jusiest turkey ever.
Last year I started another tradition. To have everything on the table that I either grew here or is local. I raised a few turkeys and even butchered one myself last year. We'll do it again this year, too.

| i really enjoy thanksgiving, or at least most times i do. i generally like it when i do the cooking.....i'm actually a better cook than the rest of the relatives---i know, it's about the getting together of the family, not the actual food???---but, hey....?..however, i also like to do the cooking because i just love the way the house smells and all the stuff going on. for the past several years though, my mother in law started getting really bossy and was always trying to manipulate all of daughters-in laws. she'd want it where she wanted it, would tell you how to make it, what time, etc. she then started to organize these almost week-long celebrations....group breakfast at one's,group lunch at another, dinner the night before, ...it went on for two days before and two days after. well, last year i mentioned it on line to "the farm girls" and got the great response of just say no, we'll see you when we have the time and do what we want. GREAT Advice!! this year i am so much less stressed! we're having a smaller gathering and then just dessert together at my house....i am so thrilled!! thanks for common, farmgirl sense! |
