A time when you, your body and your life seems to change direction.

Aug/Sept holds big changes for us - the fairs are all over, the lambs are gone, all our meat birds are butchered and freezer packed, and we turn our minds toward the beginning of school.

The garden is slowing down, but even there we see changes from one season to another - the sunflowers are beginning to pop, pumpkins and fall harvested squash are getting fat, and the annuals in the flowerbeds start to die back. Even our fog smells different. Yep fog has a smell. So Cal is known for Indian Summers - those late season hot spells that can top 100 degrees, but even with the prospect of hot days there is a crispness in the early morning fog that tells you summer is winding down.

We do a lot of garden clean up this time of year. Changing from warm weather crops to those that prefer cooler temps, we plant bulbs and sweet peas for next year. We're not so rushed for some reason. We tend to think more about indoor rather than outdoor projects.

For some reason, some how we know and feel the change from one season to another.

Can you feel it? Do you have special things you do that takes you from Summer into Fall?

Yes I can feel the changes too. I can tell when it's time for the goldenrod to bloom here, we will get a cool spell and the mornings have a different feel to them. Even though it's hot and humid during the day the evenings bring relief right around and just after sunset. Our fruits are either ripe now or very near to ripe. The leaves on our black walnut tree are starting to yellow. I like to go out in the very early morning around sunrise to see the mist, dew, and all the little spider webs with beads of moisture clinging to them.

There is a smell of slight decaying, but it's not a bad smell at all. Just one that I associate with this time of year, right before fall arrives. My spirits seem to lift this time of year because I know the cooler weather is not too far away and that the beautiful foliage and fall plants will be coming soon. The sunsets are beautiful just now, not quite like the ones in Oct./Nov but beautiful all the same. I love the autumn season best of all.

I was just in the stores and all the perty fall school clothes and the stacks on notebooks, pencils, pens and glue sticks all bring me back to the smell of freshly waxed hallways in Elementary school. I remember wearing my green courduroy jumper with white tight and Buster brown Marjane shoes. HA!! And of course, my Bee Gee's lunch box.

It is still boiling hot here but it is a different "hot" now that we are heading into Fall. Different flowers and trees are doing there things and people are out prepping for winter, painting, putting in hardy flowers, sweeping up after tourist season here. The menus are even changing. I love the smell of Coppertone and I smelled it pretty regulary for the past 10 weeks but it is fading. Gone are the deep tans or really burnt ones and the flip flops are on the discount rack -HAPPY FOR ME..sad to see the robust summer go...

I was just talking with my neighbor and mom about this yesterday! Even though we were out in the head of the day sweating away- we could really tell that summer is drawing to a close! The mornings are crisp and I am starting to have to dress Nora in slightly warmer clothes for bed time. I planted some things in my garden much later than I normally would so now I am worrying that they won't produce before the first frosts. If not, I suppose I am growing some nice compost heap fodder!

My months have ebbs and flows, days of high energy and days of NO energy. That's what I thought you were asking based on the topic. My body is changing as it grows, and I'm having to learn to roll with the seasons of my physical life. As demands are met, or my needs are met, as my friends nurture are are too busy, as my kids are well or are sick, my body physically and emotionally responds. Learning to not run against the wind but with it has been a big lesson for me this year.
But as for the four seasons, can I feel them before they're here? I don't think I feel them internally, but obviously the external cues trigger awareness of change. I do know I want the wood cut before long so when I get cold and want to get the stove going, I'll be able to. But I also feel like I just got my hot clothes in and cold clothes put up and I'm not ready for that just yet. Soon, but not yet.

In the fall and winter I am more a homebody than in the warmer months. I like to do more crafty things too. And ofcourse decorate for the season, outside mostly! Bought a few pumpkins and 2 mums and they look real cute IMO!
The goldenrods are in full bloom now, looking pretty too

I love summer and hot weather but for the cosy-ness I like these 2 seasons best. Christmas is just around the corner, peeps!! :D
