Alright gals, I was just over at the Vermont Country Store's website. I love that place. Well I was checking out a few items & all 3 that I looked at were made in China!
Man I thought that was as true blue as you could get.. Kinda sad.
I know this is the world we live in, but it sure is nice to see made in the USA every now & then
PS, plus still kinda upset that those underage gymnasts beat our girls, even though they were better |

I was going to buy some indian baskets while on the Navajo reservation a few days ago. Something didn't look quite right (I grew up in and around the res's of Arizona) and checked the bottom of the basket...made in the Philipines...gah...

That is very dissapointing to hear that! We definitely need more "home-made" items available. I feel that is is worth the extra dollar for the better quality and the fact that something was made on our own soil.

Yea, I know what you mean. When we remodeled our bathroom, I wanted a claw foot tub. I got one. Right on the back part of it (where one can rest one's back) stamped in blue is "Made in China". If I had seen that, I wouldn't have got it!

I totally know what you are all saying. I am completely torn about this issue.
I used to be disappointed when I saw the "Made in USA" Label going the way of the Model T...but then I met some amazing families that have gone and lived in third world countries. They told me about their experiences there. The thing I didn't realize before was that commercial farming (brought in by "Developed" countries" has destroyed natural habitat and ecosystems that supported indigenous populations. Often times the factories and workshops are the only way left for these people to bring in an income since their land is destroyed by slash and burn farming practices, genetically engineered seeds or for other reasons.
Now, of course I don't support a sweatshop like system. I firmly believe that everyone has the right to a clean and healthy work environment for a fair wage.
I also think that if you can find a local or American made product- that is great! Especially a farmgirl artisan! That's best, right?

I think "Lehman's" stuff is all American made, but I'm not 100% sure. I know that they advertise a lot of "Amish Made" products, and the Amish people are some of their biggest customers!!! It's all non-electric stuff-- right down to the wringer washers! Very COOL catalog (and website) if you've never seen it. They have wood burning cookstoves, REAL Aladdin lamps, hand pumps for water wells, non-electric garden tools (including those old rolling PUSH mowers--- wow! Talk about a WORKOUT!!! Who needs a gym if you've got one of THOSE things?!) They also have some food stuff, toys, games, all natural cleaning procuts, old fashion "Medicine chest" items -- all KINDS of neat stuff. Check it out! Just type in "Lehman's non-electric catalog" and see what pops up.

My family took a trip to the U.K. in February, and we had the opportunity to visit some family. I wanted to take something uniquely American as a gift - but everything that I looked at seemed to be made in another country! It was quite an eye opener!(Having said that, I totally agree with what you said, Alee.) I finally found some things at a nearby living history museum's gift shop.

Sorry to let you down, but it's funny, a few months ago my friend & I were looking at Lehman's & were amazed at all of the different countries the products came from. Some were USA, but there was a very broad spectrum. A large portion of the products just say "imported", like the old time board games. WHen I see a product that says Amish made & THAT says made in China I will definitely be scratching my head though. |

Hey Lisa, I didn't know that about Lehman's. I do know that they DO have "Amish made" products. But I guess I shouldn't be surprised that a lot of their stuff comes from other countries too. Although, you do know that MOST of the materials they use in China to make those "Made in China" products come from America! We send the raw materials over there, they turn them into stuff and then they SELL THE CRAP BACK TO US!!! But if more Americans REFUSE to buy that stuff... well, that just MIGHT make a difference. But a lot of it goes along with what Alee originally said.... cheap labor. Those big companies don't HAVE to pay fair wages, they don't HAVE to provide health care or worker compensation, and they don't HAVE to employ fair business practices like they do here in America. Sadley, it all comes down to ONE thing--- M-O-N-E-Y.
Hey, want to know ANOTHER Irony? The US is the FOURTH largest rice producer in the world. (Ca is a BIG contributer), but we IMPORT a great deal of the rice that is sold on the commercial market from CHINA. Is that ridiculuos or WHAT?

I find the made in China label distressing also. The way I cope is first I ask myself do I really need this item. Then if at all possible I look in second hand stores, garage sales, freecycle, etc. for the item I need before I buy new made in China stuff. I'm at a place in my life that the "stuff" isn't so important anymore so that makes it easier too. But I still drool over all the "homesteading stuff" tho. That old saying-use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without- is also something I think about to keep from buying so much "stuff".
