A rough winter in the Northeast is :
*Late October to Late April either cold, snow or mud season *Commuting on ice packed roads or heavy snow without any options of staying home safe *Digging your car and drive-way out twice a day or more *Days of being in the single digits temperatures *Icicles are big as your arm hanging from the roof edges doing damage to shingles and guttering *Cutting back on the family budget to afford the monthly delivery of heating oil and finding other sources to keep the house warm *Snow mountains from plowed snow in store parking lots over 10 feet high that don't melt until late Spring *Frozen pipes in the house *Keeping an emergency kit in car in case you become stranded *Cabin Fever
But ---- it is also
*Skating and building bon-fires on frozen ponds and lakes. *Sledding and skiing *Creating snow people and snow forts with your kids *Feeling cozy inside the house on snowy days with something slow cooking on the stove *Pink cheeked babies in snow suits discovering their first winter *Hanging gleaned items from the woods (berries, evergreen and dried vines) to adorn your doors, window boxes and fences *Snow ice cream *Homemade doughnuts, maple syrup poured on snow and dill pickles served at skating parties on frozen lakes & ponds *Candles or luminaros to light the night *All those boots and mittens lined up in the mud room after a fun day in the snow *Catching snowflakes on your tongue *A silence and beauty in each new fallen snow that can't be described

I have no experience with that kind of winter! I really don't think I'd be able to drive, much less walk in lots of snow. LOL Marly |

You would do great .
We could build a Farm Girl snow woman complete with apron & fresh from the woods greenery hat --- and am sure you would like to try one of the maple syrup rendering farms "sugar shacks" that feature all you can eat pancakes with all the trimmings.
When living in Houston, I traveled to Louisiana a few times a year. The food was incredible --- and the people very friendly.
Going to Louisiana with my family are some of the best memories when living in the south.

It's hard to think about winter coming, fall is always my favorite season of the year, the leaves change, the light becomes very dramatic, it is such a lovely time of year. The heat usuallly disappears as well. I don't mind winter too much, as long as we have a nice blanket of snow on the ground, to keep the plants safe and brighten up the landscape. I had my house painted a beautiful green color just so i'd be sure to have something green to see in the winter...
This winter I am going to make insulated curtains to place in the windows at night, my storm windows are starting to crumble, and my heating costs have more than doubled. It is always easier to appreciate winter if you can keep dry and warm. There is something very comforting to me when the days shorten, when it is time to settle in to make a pot of chowder, get a book to read or some sewing...

Karin, you are so right. Fall is the most beautiful of seasons -- especially in New England.
I always have to take one last trip to see the ocean before the snow sets in. A favorite destination is York, Maine to see the Nubble Light House and sample a bowl of chowder at a nearby restaurant. And of course, a stop at Maine's famous Stonewall Kitchen, to pick up a jar of their blueberry jelly and sample bread at When Pigs Fly bakery.
You are very fortunate to be living in such a beautiful state. Maine has so much to offer.
Good luck with the insulated curtain project. A very good idea to conserve energy with winter approaching. Our old house (built in 1929) has 37 windows, which were only replaced from the originals this last Spring. We will be shutting off rooms soon and winterizing the house.
Your suggestion of insulated drapes has inspired me to give it a try for a few rooms. With the price of heating oil, we have to do everything we can.

I LOVE summer, but would really like a real winter like that!! It has been AGES since we had a real winter: Ice skating on the ponds Building a snowman Needing warm mittens and a hat Sledding.
Nope we won't get that here anymore :( Global warming robbed us from that. Like I said I really prefer summer, but Fall and Winter can be SO cosy, sitting by the fire with a good book and hot chocolate.
Ah well. I WILL sit by the fire, with a book and chocolate, even if it is not THAT cold hehe

Gotta say I'm not a huge fan of winter! Maybe that's because we get ice storms here in Missouri that take down the power lines and leave us cold and in the dark for up to a week or more! I'm always sad when the first hard frost/freeze arrives and wipes out all of my flowers and veggies. But on the bright side, the snow/ice also wipes out the mosquitos :)

Hmmm...all the bads sound familiar, but I can't remember the last time I went ice skating or did any of those other fun things. Seems like the winters we have these days are just cold and snowy enough to be uncomfortable, but not enough to have fun. Last winter, I never once got to use my cross country skis. The snow all fell during the work week and was slushy by the weekend. How's that for unfair? |
