| Last time my hubby mowed our lawn, he ran over three baby bunnies in one nest and one in another... He felt so sad, but the way they make their nests (which are all over our yard), you cannot see them unless you really, really look for them. Yesterday he mowed again, and by some stroke of luck found a nest of four babies before he ran over them. The kids were so excited. They are "keeping an eye on the babies" until they move out of the nest. They are so cute. It is hard not to "adopt" them. But they are wild and so we leave them be. |

Kelli-baby bunnies are about the cutest things ever! I'm glad that you're letting them be so that their momma can feed and care for them. Baby cottontails don't usually do very well being handled by humans, unless that human is experienced in wildlife rehabilitation. As hard as it will be(cause they're so darn cute!), do not handle the babies or their nest.
It doesn't take very long for them to start leaving the nest, usually 3-4 weeks after they're born. At first you'll see them explore close to the nest, and eventually they'll widen their horizons and venture further from the nest. If you're lucky you'll get to see momma come feed them, but if you don't, don't despair that she's abandoned the babies. Momma rabbits only feed their young once or twice a day, and they don't sit on the nest as her scent would attract predators to the nest.
