Okay. This should make all your hairs curl. We are on a budget plan for fuel. Just got our new coupons as the year runs from August to August. Our Budget plan per month is $600.00!!!!!! We rent our house....and yes, it's an old farm house, but the thing is we don't have a hot water heater! I can get up at 3am when everyone is sound asleep...no water running...heater not turned on.....and the blasted thing is running! I do all my laundry in cold water and we all take 3 minute showers once a day. In the dead of winter we have it set on 62, turn it off at night completely, and have kerosene heaters which we can't afford now because Kero is $4.99 a gallon! We are paying more for fuel than we pay in rent! Okay. I feel better now. You're the first peoples I've told about this. Thank you for listening! Susan |

Fuel prices are just ridiculous! I can't believe how much you all are paying to heat your homes. It's downright criminal! I want to build a windmill in our back yard for power but I suspect the city might have something to say about it since it would be visible from the historic parts of town. I'm dreaming, I know. But wouldn't it just be perfect if we could all get off the grid?

I think if they keep jacking up prices without having income grow at the same rate- there will be more people living off the grid. I know for a fact that when we get out own house, I am going to make sure that we can heat the whole thing with wood and passive heating! If our kids have to share a room so we have a smaller house- so be it!

It really is an issue for people who rent their old farmhouses because the landlords may not be willing to add additional heat sources. I would love a gas fireplace, potbelly stove or something but I doubt he would go for it. This will be my first winter in this farmhouse with my two kids age 5 and 8 (I just went through a divorce) so I am totally scared about making it through the winter. I can't turn down the heat too much when I am not here because I have a dog and a bird so I guess I will be looking into those insulated drapes and space heaters...

Yeah, the problem for the landlord is the cost for the insurance. Some of the rentals around here had to pull the stoves out because their insurance company was raising their premiums because of the stove.
