Toby is my rescue coon shepard cross dog.I really luv him dearly. I gave him a bath and 4 hours later he was sprayed by a skunk mostly on the face and chest. I washed him about 15 times with a combo of natures gate herbal shampoo mixed with basic H and dish soap. He still really stinks.
Then the next evening by hubby takes him out for a walk and he gets sprayed again!!! I couldn't believe it.....sprayed in the face and chest again. This times used the same stuff as the first time then used my homemade bar soap. Then mixed baking soda and vinegar where it was safe to put. I can't really do much around his eyes. He still smells terrible and he is a house dog.
No more walks in the evening you can be sure of that. We seem to be infested with skunks this year. I see those baby stinkers running around all over the place in the evening. We will do morning walks instead.They are cute tho especially the baby ones.
Does anyone have a better recipe for removing stinker smell?

I have read somewhere that using tomatoe juice may help, though I have never had to try it. Oh my!! Poor doggie.

Linda! Oh No!!!!! I ran across these a couple months back just "in case" our Bad Seed got it, running through the woods. We've been lucky, but sorry about your Toby :(
*There are a number of different ways to help remove skunk odor from a dog. Some work a little better than others, and unfortunately, some make bigger messes in the process.
A few of the top ideas for removing skunk odor from the family dog include:
Vinegar and water. There are many who swear by this method for removing skunk odors. The idea is to soak the dog in a white vinegar and water bath, soap him up and then rinse. Repeat the process if it does not work the first time.
Apple cider vinegar and water soak. Substitute apple cider vinegar for the white vinegar to give this one a try.
Powdered douche agents. Many people say this is one of the best methods going for removing skunk odor from a dog. The trick is to use the powdered kind.
Sprite or 7up. This is a remedy for skunk odor that should not hurt a dog's skin or eyes. All it calls for is soaking the animal in soda for a while and then washing normally. Repeat if necessary.
The first inclination after a skunk run in might be to try tomato juice, but many dog owners complain this creates a bigger mess and doesn't really get the job done. The above ideas should not mess up the bathroom or yard too terribly bad and they won't dye a dog's fur.
Dealing with a dog who has been sprayed by a skunk is never fun, but with a little work, Fido should smell like a bed of roses again. Just take steps to protect anything else from picking up the odor of skunk if at all possible.*

I tried the tomatoe years ago and I think it smelled worse. I will try the 7-up since I have some here... I already tried the vinegar and it didn't do much.

My dog got skunked bout a month ago...tomato juice didn't work but hydrogen peroxide and baking soda did...
Also, the company that makes natures miracle also makes a deskunk solution...if you have a local pet store call them and see if they carry it...it is all natural...

Skunks seem thick around here this year. Our two labs just got one in the hay field and now we have some wonderful smelling hay for the horses. I've always use lemon juice. It seems to get rid of the smell the quickest. And it gives our yellow lab beautiful golden highlight. Good luck.

Jen I did call the local places around here and even the vets. No on had a thing for that. I thought that was kinda strange. I put an order in yesterday to Revival for flea control spot on treatments and didn't even think to ask about skunk remover. I could kick myself in the bottom.....Oh well.
Baking soda and peroxide......Do you use the peroxide straight or mix with the soda and then put it on? I am really going to have to watch his eyes because he took most of the spray in his face.
At least I have several things to try. If it stops raining today I am going to give Toby another try.

Sorry to hear about Toby. I've had my Dobe-mix, Lyla, sprayed in the face at LEAST 4 times. My "secret formula" was found on the Internet, and it consists of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and a teaspoon of regular old dishsoap. Use a large bottle of peroxide, a box of baking soda and the dishsoap, mix in a bucket and, while in the shower w/ the dog, apply the mix to his coat, rubbing it in. Be careful to avoid the eyes. Leave the mix on his coat for about 5 minutes, then rinse. You can shampoo him afterwards if you like. I used this "recipe" several years ago when my Doberman Raider got sprayed at midnight! I couldn't find the stuff the store sold (they didn't carry it at the place I stopped) and, at that time of night, you get pretty frantic. Anyway, the mixture totally took the skunk smell out of Raider and has worked for me with Lyla as well. This last time it didn't do nearly as well, but I didn't leave it on her coat long enough.

A friend of mine says that using a douche formula with vinegar works the best. He keeps them on hand for this specific purpose. Good luck.

Tomatoe juice did it for me when my dog, Luck, got sprayed by a skunk. LOL That was funny. You'll laugh about it later when your dog doesn't stick so bad. LOL I also crushed up charcoal and mixed it with the tomatoes. After three baths, it did the trick. Good luck.

My dog got sprayed a month ago..mixture one can Tomato juice, one quart hydrogen peroxide and one box of baking soda worked, Lather him up real good & leave it onhim for awhile * ewwwwwwwwww * yeah I know but give the tomato juice time to do its stuff.say 1/2 hour. Shampoo and let him go try it again........ Aren't dogs fun?

The peroxide and baking soda does work. My dog just got her first spraying about a month ago.

Well I tried the baking soda and peroxide and that seems to have worked best for me. I can still smell it around his face but I know he was sprayed in the eyes and I can only wipe those carefully. Thank you ladies for all the good info. I am sure I will be using the mixture again soon..........he has it in for them now. He cries to go out at night because he knows the stinkers are snooping in the garden.Take care.
