| Dumb silkie question--how do you know if they're male or female? We have 5 who are only about 3 months old; at least one is attempting to crow. . .so--who is who? Or do I have to wait a few more months?Thanks! |

My silkie roo was a bit older then yours are (maybe 5-6 months) before he started crowing, but I had my suspicions as his comb grew larger and his tail feathers got longer and curved. Watch for those kinds of things, also check to see if you can see any spurs starting. You might just have to wait and see who starts crowing, though. Good luck!

Yep, Molly is right. It's just like any OTHER chicken, but the silkies are a bit trickier to figure out. If it IS a boy, he might also be chasing the hens around a lot. My Millie Fleur rooster (still very young) thinks he's Valentino!! The ladies are NOT impressed!

Oh tell me about it!
i recently had to find better homes for 2 silkies that were both roos. The final straw was when one beat the other up so badly it had to be carried back to the coop. Of course he was fine the next a.m. but in this heat, that's just too cruel. I though for sure this time i had way more hens. Luckily, the one white silkie roo is exactally what I had wanted.
The flock is only 5 months old, and there are still 1 or 2 suspects that aren't crowing, but have bigger wattles.
