Okay Lisa!

My strawberry plants are thriving and even producing some normal looking strawberries! Yay! Now one is sending out little runners! Yay! There is a long stem and then a cluster of leaves at the end like the spider plants you were talking about. So...how do I separate the baby from the momma? I took some wed dirt and molded it around the bottom of the baby and weighed the stem down... Will it put down roots? Should I just cut it off from the main plant?

alee, i am not lisa but perhaps this will help. you dont have to do that even. they will root all by themselves! cut it from the main plant after it roots or just let it stay where it is if you have a bed that will accomodate it. peace connie in alaska

Yup, Just what Connie said. Do remember that when they start sending out runners they will be putting less energy into producing strawberries.

in "normal" years we get tons of berries off our plants. they are planted every eyar since they wont "winter over" in these terribly cold temperatures. we never cut the runners and never pull a blossom. good luck with your berries! peace connie in alaska

Yep, like Connie said. But also, what Lillian said. That's why I'm building another bed that will not be allowed to reproduce and I'll just keep my small established bed as a baby factory. They do not produce as many strawberries if allowed to send out runners.

Good to know!

Lisa- do you remember what type of strawberries you have? I can't remember- are they June bearing or ever bearing?

Mine are ever bearing. They are called Tristar. Did you still want babies? I'll need your new address. I'm going out to our farmgirl garden after dinner tonight and cut them all off to send to two other gals and a couple of local folks.

Lisa-

Probably not right now- maybe in a month or so? We have some bills we need to get taken care of first.

That's cool. I might have more in the fall. Just let me know when you're ready.
