my middle daughter is staying here at the farm for a while and she has terrible allergies, wonder if any of you have suggestions about ways that you have treated allergies with natural remedies, ie honey, pollen etc.
her allergies affect her with a runny nose, etc, those respiratory symptoms.
thanks for any advice, help you can give her.

Get her a neti pot. I have allergies, and that is a life saver for me.

I also take claratin once in a while.

You can buy a Neti-pot at any drug or health food store. I use a special bottle that I got from the allergists office, but you can buy THAT in a drug store too. (not sure about the health food store). The kit runs about $12-$14, but it really IS a lifesaver! I have a recipe for the solution too, so you can make your own instead of having to buy those stupid tiny packets (about the size of an alchol wipe) which really rack up the $$$.

I had TERRIBLE allergies-- so bad that I had to get allergy shots every week (though I was actually supposed to get them TWICE a week, but I lived over 30mins away and it just wasn't happenin'). I turned out to be one of those EXTREMELY rare cases where the shots were actually begining to cause more harm than good-- after nearly TWO YEARS of treatment!!! (it was VERY scary! Even my doctors were getting a little nervous) I sitll use the nasal rinse bottle and it's been a GREAT help-- it's about the ONLY thing I can still do for the allergies since I'm allergic to, or have severe "adverse reactions" to nearly ALL the medication (especially to OTC'S!!)-- that's why we went to the shots in the first place.

Anyway, if it's just seasonal allergies, have your daughter use the nasal rinses twice a day. Once in the morning and once at night. That should help. If not, OTC meds along with the nasal rinses might be better. I'd suggest an allergy specialist if her symptoms are severe. They really DO help most people. I'M just not one of them! Good luck ~~~Tracy

Chiming in with the suggestion of a neti pot. You can also ask your local pharmacist for "saline sinus rinses" - they come in squeeze tubes, and often are behind the counter (but do not need prescription). Good luck!

I stopped taking allergy meds and my allergies actually seem better...hmmmmm.... I know someone who swears by the local honey thing although I can't seem to figure out just how much and how often I need to take it to be effective.... This year seems to be REALLY bad for people with allergies at least around here. I know people who never had them and are really suffering. My honey has actually developed asthma this year after buckin' hay.....
Yipes! I don't know if I could do the Neti pot! I'm too chicken! :D

I have read that taking stinging nettle helps, and you can get this in pill form. I have a friend who's son has terrible allergies and while the daily taking of stinging nettle doesn't make them go away he notices a huge difference when he forgets to take them. Check Wal-mart or your local health food store and try it for a week or two - you should notice a change.
