Any fellow soap makers out there? I have been making cold process soap for a year now, and I am hooked! What a feeling to create something so wonderful that everyone loves. I now have over 30 varieties! Among other products I make.

I used to make soap all the time and loved doing it. Someday when my life isn't so hectic I plan on taking it back up again.

Yup! I make cold and hot process soap. I love it. Soap making is such a fun thing to make! I love how all the different oils and fats lend a different quality to the soap!

Hi Connie! I'm a soapmaker. I've been doing it for about 3 years now. I love making soap!!! Every single batch I make is exciting to me. I can't wait to unmold it and cut it!

I was in the midst of a move and wasn't able to make any soap for about a month. I finally made a batch at the beginning of last week and it felt so good!!!

I make soap...havn't for awhile now..about a year I guess..but have all the supplies and have been asked to teach a class in Sept..so I will do a batch soon just to brush up and then will have samples for those who take the class. It will just be a small group at my house..two different sessions a week apart. I do love homemade lavender soap!!! I made my first soap about 18 years ago. ( I had to think how old my second son was to remember how long ago..anyone else do that??)

I have read and printed out quite a bit of information on soap making. The one big stumbling block I have encounted is where to get lye? I have tried all the hardware stores, outlet stores and any place else I think of. Do any of you have any suggestions?

Thank you so much, by the way I bought some great soap from one of our farm girls, goat milk and it is lovely.

Hi, Barbara! Have you checked to see if there is a Lowe's near you? Most of them carry a product called 'Roebic' in their plumming aisle (not in the cleaners/ Drano stuff, but with the actual plumming), and it is 100% lye. Look online at Lowe's website to be sure the one by you has it in stock, to save you a drive! This has helped me out many times in a pinch and I've always had good success with it. Otherwise, check out a chemical/ janitorial supply place; most carry sodium hydroxide. Good luck on your search!!

Gee--I know I'm a want-to-be farmgirl when I read how y'all are making soap! I though growing a garden was something. This is the best thing that happen to me in a while, finding this Farmgirl Site. I have just learned so much. I'll have to give soap making a try. Do y'all sell the soap? Such interesting postings. Thanks.

I hope you can find lye near you. I know the soap supply places don't like to ship it (or won't I should say) it is easy to find around here and where I used to live in Calif I didn't have a problem either. I would check for soap supply type places near you if none of the hardware, discount or grocery stores have it. (the brand I always find is Red Devil lye..right in the grocery store by the draino and stuff) I have bought bigger amounts a couple hours away at a soap supply place..they sell by the bucket.

Barbara - how close are you to Chicago? Columbus Foods in Chicago is a big supplier but I don't know if they ship lye. Also try Kangaroo Blue. I'm lucky enough to be able to drive across the river into Portland and pick mine up. Most places that ship lye charge a hazmat fee of $20 in addition to shipping. That makes it kind of expensive.

Super ideas all, thank you. I am actually closer to Mpl/St.Paul, about 120 miles. What I am finding is that none of the stores carry the lye as it can be used in the making of drugs. I was so surprised as I had always seem the cans of it in the stores. I think the suggestions of the plumbing supply might help. Where I live is in the middle of corn fields and the biggest close town has 500 people. Even some of the larger towns in Mankato have very little in the way of soap making supplies. I have also had major problems finding my supplies for cake decorating and now use the internet to find what I need. You all are great and thank you so much. Barbara

Debi, I have some soap that I made that I think would go great with your towels. It removes all those smells from your hands, like onions and fish. It has coffee grounds and oatmeal. Send me an email and I will get with you.

You can also get lye at www.chemistrystore.com. Yes, there is a hazmat fee, but even with the shipping, I find it is cheaper than trying to find Red Devil Lye in the stores.

I have been making hot and cold process soap for 19 years. I'd be happy to answer questions (not that I know everything, but I know something!) and I have soap ingredients for sale on my website. I do this as my living.

I would be happy to trade soap for handknit washcloths! And I can make pure olive oil soap.

What I make is natural, no synthetic scents or colors, no petroleum ingredients or fillers. I can make soap to order as long as the soap requested contains natural botanical (essential) oils and herbs.

Roses are red, Violets are blue; But they don't get around Like the dandelions do.

Hi Betty
Yes all soap has lye, you cant make it without it. After the saponification (chemical reaction between the lye and the fats/oils) process is complete, no lye actually remains in the soap.
