when can i start feeding my chicks eggs shells? the guy at our fed store said to be careful about giving them too much until they are about ready to start laying. peace connie in alaska

We didn't start feeding egg shells until after they had produced some eggs. Even now, they only get about 10% of the shells they produce, and we still have very strong shells.

Be sure to look at the label on your feed and see if there is "calcium added" in any form.

If you're feeding "refuse", cottage cheese, yogurt, oyster shells, shrimp shells, etc are all sources of calcium, too.

There is really no need until they start laying. Your starter feed should have some added calcium.
