Do any of you out there know of a source for yarn made from dog hair or know of a spinner who would spin dog hair?

If you have never heard of this I believe it is called chienangora and once properly cleaned it does not have a doggy odor. It is also supposed to be 10 times more insulating then wool

Many breeds have a double coat. The outside coat is a weather resistance hard hair while the undercoat is often fluffy and is easily spun. I have a Belgian Sheepdog and an Australian Shepherd and they shed coat that can be spun. Your Nordic breeds such as Malamutes and Huskies are also great sources of fur.

I would really prefer to buy some yarn but if I can't find any and can find a spinner, I'll start collecting. I'd like to make mittens.

Kathy

My mother bought a scarf from New Zealand made from collie fur. (She's a collie/Lassie nut.) It is definitely not the softest scarf I've ever felt but maybe you'd have luck with other breeds?

I have spun dog fur and have a book about spinning it. It really varies according to breed. I worked in two dog grooming shops over the years (as a bath and brush person) and was able to collect all sorts of wool to spin from dogs..it is nice stuff. My favorite was Samoyed. I had a gal who had me spin some wire hair fox terrier fur (it was really awfully scratchy) to make a little knit blanket to put under a figurine of a terrier that looked like hers as a little memorial when her dog died. She had cut some of his hair before he died.

I have spun dog hair.
Samoyed and american eskimo were the best, they didnt smell like dog
but they dont have a real doggie smell anyway.
The others ive spun smelled like dog before it was spun, and after it was spun to. :)
in my experience, I could never get the real doggie smelling smell out of it, you could smell it most when you went outside with it on your head, and it got damp.
Spinning the under coat is not as easy as it seems, because it is short .It is almost impossible to get all the guard hairs all picked out, so that they are not prickly.
There is a gal on one of the islands in the San Juans that does only dog hair, but dont know her name or what island.
She spins for people . maybe you can look up on google and find her. thers been several things written about her and also on TV
Good luck

Ooh! This came up in my eBay design group not long ago, one of my fellow designers has done this and posted some great resources, I'll have to dig a little and see what I can find for you. :)

Want any golden retriever fur? I have plenty of it... allllll over. LOL! ;)

I have seen it done, and its very nice.
I did have a chow chow at the time and he had beautiful fur, and I always wanted to do something with the garbage bags full that he would shed.
i imagine his fur would have been similar to that of a samoyd, very soft.

Kathy, I am a spinner/weaver and I have done alot of fibers. I did some dog hair blend for someone who had a pair of older keeshounds and wanted his and hers sweaters done from them. I don't like to do straight dog hair,so I blend with a comparable sheep's wool color. I would offer to spin yours but i am in school full time and working full time, so my time is limited. Good luck on your quest, if you haven't found someone in a years time i would love to take it on. (I graduate next year) jenny louise
