Does anyone else have hypoglycemia? Does it make you very sleepy, achey, or get many UTIs? I'm trying to figure out the causes of these things. I have had a TON of soda, but really don't know the drastic effects or not that it could have on hypoglycemia. I'm getting very frustrated and kinda feeling like I'm fighting an uphill battle. When I don't eat/drink some sort of unnatural sugar, I have wicked migraines, when I do, its UTIs and wanting to sleep ALL THE TIME!! Any thoughts..? Please don't refer me to a dr. I don't have insurance and am trying to go the natural way. thanks Jess

Children seldom misquote you. In fact, they usually repeat word for word what you shouldn't have said.

If you're wanting to put your mind at rest, go to one of the big box drugstores and purchase a glucose monitor. I bought a real cheap one for around $10 and it included a handful of test strips (which are expensive). Take a glucose reading in the morning before you have anything to eat or drink (an 8 hour fast) and then have something really, really sugary. Take another test about 20 minutes after finishing your sweet drink and see if you get an abnormal spike. The kit will have a pamphlet in it that will tell you what is the normal range for fasting blood glucose, reactive hypoglycemia and the obvious, diabetes. This of course doesn't qualify for good diagnostics from a medical lab, but it will give you an idea if you are dealing with a blood glucose problem or not. Di |

I have hypoglycemia. You should avoid all forms of refined sugars(soda, juice, candy) and if you have not seen a doctor you need to immediately. Not contolling hypoglycemia will lead to diabetes if not taken care of. I am not sure about the UTI's as this was not an issue. Most likely the migraine are associated with recent fluctuations in bloodsugar. My migraines have gone from 3 days a week to maybe 3 days every 3 months. You need to see a doctor. This isn't something to fool around with.

I am diabetic, and it sounds like you have high blood sugar to me. (sleepy after eating sugar/carbs and migraine headaches) Those were my symptoms, but at the time I was too dumb to even conceive it could be diabetes. I just thought I was burning the candle at both ends too much, and the headaches, well I was just being a big baby.
Like Julie, I urge you to see a doctor to rule out anything serious. In either case, you sound like your blood sugar levels are out of whack. Controling either disease there isn't going to be much of a "natural" route to take. Perhaps you will be able to at first with a VERY strict diet and exercise. But, your pancreas isn't working properly, and eventually it stops working altogether- at least with diabetes it does. Hence the insulin injections and other meds.
Check around, I know our local grocery stores and/or pharmacies frequently offer diabetes/blood pressure etc. checks/classes for free or low cost.
I know in my case the diagnosis was a surprise, but after I got everything on track, I felt/feel so much better, and the sleepiness and headaches are very rare now. Both are usually self inflicted now.

Kate I do not have to take any medication for my hypoglycemia. I have controlled mine solely through changing my diet as well as the WAY I eat (a few VERY SMALL snacks throughout the day). My doctor has never even indicated I needed to take any kind of medications.
Jess you may also want to get your thyroid checked. Those sound like symptoms of thyroid problems as well.

UTIs are typically a yeast infection and yeast is fed by sugar. So if you're eating a lot of sugar and your body is not processing it effectively, leading to hypoglycemia, this is likely why you're getting UTIs. Switch to Stevia for your sweetener. It is an herb and a natural sweetener. And I hope that like Julie, you can control your problem with diet. Good Luck!

Hi Jess~ I had been diagnosised by a doctor for hypoglycemia several years ago. In the end I was properly diagnosed by a CNM two years ago with PCOS (poly cystic ovarian syndrom). If you have issues with weightgain, fatigue, and have with that cramping with your periods or very irregular ones I would ask your ob/gyn to look into the possibilty of PCOS. I have been able to stay off meds just by losing some weight, eating 5 balanced mini meals a day, lots of water, NO SODA, and exercise.
The uti's are most likely due to the lack of water. As well as the headaches. Often times I have been told that severe headaches are caused by dehydration. Although, I believe yours are due to withdraw from either the caffine, sugar or artificial sweetners;or all of them. Cleanse yourself from the soda. It should help and either way it is better for you. Try adding 6 oz. cranberry juice a day for the UTI. My mom swears by it.
I know you are hoping not to see a doctor but I highly reccomend you try and visit one of the clinics that most university teaching hospitals provide. If you think you have a UTI it could become severe enough to damage your kidneys.

Jess, It sounds like you could be suffering from any conceivable illness and should see a doctor. I know you didn't want to, but there may be bigger fish to fry. The longer you wait, the worse it could get.
And Julie, I envy you not having to take any meds. I am hoping after losing a few more pounds I can go off mine as well. Not quite there yet.

yep! gurlfren .. even though you don't want us to say SEE A DOCTOR .. i think you'll see from all the above .. there can be lots of medical reasons for your problems and unless you get it CORRECTLY diagonosed .. no amount of 'good advice' is going to help you .. and perhaps it will indeed hurt BIG TIME. I, too, am a DIABETIC .. and it all started with 'hypo-glycemia'! I am now hooked up to an insulin pump for the rest of my life.
sooooooo .. i agree with most of the other gurlz .. find a way to get a medical DIAGNOSIS. xo, frannie
