| I tripped and fell last week, breaking my right wrist in two places and boy, am I ready for this to be over! Just when my big new veggie garden was taking off, money was coming in that will allow me to get my office running properly again (like getting the electricity turned back on) and -- well, I guess these things are never convenient. I can't drive, am 100 % dependent on others for rides to doctors' appointments, business meetings, grocery shopping, etc. I'm trying to follow doctor's orders about keeping my arm elevated, even in bed at night, and it still hurts, though not badly enough for me to think it's abnormal. Sisters, I want your good advice -- how to simplify housework, which must go on, how to tend the garden without getting the cast all sweaty, and maybe even how to get my husband to learn the manual shift on my pickup truck so we can get our garbage & recycling to the landfill. Random hugs much appreciated -- ouch! Careful! -- |

OH Mara,
I am So sorry! I am guessing the hardest think will be is letting this go that be let go and just taking care of the immediate.... So prioritize! lots and lots of hugs and sympathy!

| Oh Mara, how terribly inconvenient! Timing is everything, as they say, but there is not a "good" time to break anything....I hope you are left handed (like me). How long will you be in a cast? If you are meaning that money was coming in from veggie sales, can you have your customers pick their own? Do you have any nearby youngish nieces, grandkids, etc. that could come and spend a few weeks to help with the "two handed" chores? The big stuff has just gotta sit until you are able to handle it, so try not to worry about those. Sending you lots of love and a big hug. Nance |

That really sucks Mara! So sorry you are going through this! First off, don't worry about the housework, it will wait until you are better! Seriously, if you can get help with the vacuuming & washing floors, the other stuff can truly wait. Don't worry about the weeds until they are tall enough to pull out easily with your other hand. You can give your husband driving lessons on a street by your home that doesn't have much traffic. Most of all, take care of you! The more you do that, the quicker you'll heal & get things back in order! Hugs to you!

I am really sorry for you,
I think it would help if you could get hubby and some of the others in your family to help with the work
When I am sick or something wrong; my hubby helps out quite a bit.
He has also learned to cook some.

| Thank you all so much! Nance, my veggies aren't my source of income, though it does save us lots of grocery money -- once we've amortized the cost of the anti-deer fence and start-up seeds! I'm a graphic designer by trade, computer-based. And right-handed, by the bye. Dawn, I like your advice about the weeds -- I'll heed it in the perennial beds, but the veggies need to be kept well-weeded. Happily, I've been lucky that there haven't been too many so far. I also like your take-charge attitude about teaching my husband to drive my truck. We can do it right on our property somewhere -- a good thing since I wouldn't be able to drive it to a nearby road to get him started. I don't understand his refusal to budge on this, but I won't give up! Cheryl, you've touched on a real problem for those of us who live in the country but lack the old once-a-week-at-the=Grange (and/or church) way of life that we think of as traditional farmgirl life -- and that we're trying to generate here, as best we can. (And we do a pretty good job, don't we? :-) I guess women almost everywhere have the same problem; our communities are so seldom set up to nurture across fences, or courtyards. I'll tell you what, sisters, when I get over this, I will never pass by a person wearing a cast without asking how I can help them. It's incredible how it changes your life, and how frustrating those changes are. It took me about 20 minutes to type this post with my left hand! Arrgggh! Thanks again for the farmgirlhood :-) |

| Sheila, my husband is a terrific cook! Even before this happened, he started making the most wonderful authentic Indian dishes -- he's discovered an Indian grocery store near where he works and has taken over the kitchen ever since. Lucky me! Now, if only he'd put his dirty clothes in the hamper...not to mention the driving thing. A friend of ours came over yesterday to take our trash and recycling to the landfill for us. You'd think he'd have been a little humbled by that, but no. I try to remember that not many women wake up in the morning to the sound of Schubert on the piano downstairs, and I do :-) There's really a lot to be said for that. |

Mara, I hope you get to feeling better. I broke my big toe a month ago and boy, it stinks (literally, not physically...ha!!!) My mom broke her wrist a few years ago and she would write in cursive, stir in a bowl, use a light 1lb weight to stregthen it back up (of course, this was after waiting an appropriate amount of time and getting the doc's approval).

| Gosh Heather, how awful about your big toe. I'll bet that hurt something awful. But about your mom: is it really difficult to write again afterward? You make it sound as if your mother's accomplishments (which I'm so glad she achieved!) were out of the ordinary. What do I have to look forward to? I make my living using my hands, and my purest joy is in using my collection of fountain & dip pens to write letters. What did your mom do to get her hand function back? Anything PT-wise while the cast was still on? I'm sure there's PT after it's off. I see the orthopedic surgeon tomorrow & will know then whether or not I'll have to have surgery. It really hurts today -- lots of ouches all of a sudden that don't seem related to any movement. Is that usual? What's supposed to happen as time goes by with broken bones? Can anyone tell me? I've been surprised to find so little practical advice on the 'Net, considering how common an injury this is. Maybe the doctor will be more informative this time than he was last week. Sure hope he doesn't have to reset me. I don't think I could go through that hell again. |

She started really really really slow...it was like 2 months in a wrist guard thingy, taking it off to soak her wrist and I think after a week or so, they had her doing exercises (ask your doc). Trust me, it took a long time to heal and she still has some aches. I used to sprain my ankles alot and I was told to "write" the alphabet with my toes and feet. I am sure a doc can give you the low down. Start slow and build up and always be a bit cautious and listen to your body. She is back to doing yoga after 2 years of intensive therapy. The yoga has helped build up her bones and muscles again. Good luck and let us know how you are doing.

| Wow. I can see this is going to be a longer haul than just time spent in the cast. My doctor okayed me for no surgery, so that was a relief. I managed to wash & blow-dry my hair this morning all by myself. I guess I'll manage, but wow. Still hurts, even though I'm dosing full-time on Tylenol 3 now (codeine). Heather, thanks for the detailed feedback. It really helps to know what to expect. Everyone's case is different, of course, but I suspect I'll be doing something like what your mom did. Say hi to her for me! |

I broke my wrist when I was in 8th grade- it was pretty simple break and of course I was pretty young, but I just had the cast time and as soon as they took it off- I was back to normal. The arm was a bit weaker, but I found just doing my normal things brought it right back to speed. I hope your wrist continues to heal quickly! *hugs*

| Thanks, gals! I actually took Fate into my (mostly left) hand and drove my truck into town today! Such freedom!!! Shifting was tricky, but living at the whim and availability of other people was driving (no pun intended) CRAZY. But I left my wallet at home, can you believe it? Thanks to ours being a really truly Small Town, the cafe let me order what I needed to fortify myself, knowing I'm good for the money next time I'm in. Wasn't that nice? |

That's great Rosemary! Once the initial fracture starts healing, the pain starts to go away a bit unless you bang the cast around a lot. You'll learn how to do things in a whole new way!
