I have a walnut tree behind my property, and there are now walnuts dropping from the tree into my back yard. They are still encased in their green 'shells'.
I was wondering if they will continue to ripen and be edible, or if they have to ripen and lose their green shell while still on the tree.

They'll be fine Diana. When I was kid, me and my sister and brothers would "steal" the nuts that dropped from the neighbor's tree and rolled into our yard (she hated that we did that) and let the green rind turn brown and then clean, crack and eat them. The nuts filled the shells and were just fine.
You'll want to lay them out in a single layer as the green shell rots and gets really mushy and messy.
