Doesn't that sound like something out of Little House on the Prairie? Well, it is an issue at my house - and I always related to Laura :). I actually did have a Mrs. Ingalls for a teacher in 1st and 2nd grade - and thought that she really was Laura's mom, or at least closely related. Back to the hollyhocks... any natural solutions?

I don't know of any solutions... but I'd sure like some seeds if you have any to spare...as I'll be starting over from scratch on gardening next year sometime.Aside from just yanking the plants out whole I don't really know what you could do to solve the problem.

I've never even heard of a hollyhock problem; hence no tried and true solution for your dilemma. Pulling them before they go to seed would be the only thing I can think of. Unless you want to try a mixture of vinegar and salt which kills pretty much everything.

I'm with Tina, save your seeds for a seed exchange later in the year. I'm sure lots of us would love some!

I'd be happy to save some seeds for anyone who would like. The flowers are a deep red. Thankfully, the plant is still standing. We had a very bad thunderstorm on Tuesday. My inlaws were visiting and we had the kids at a park. We drove home, avoiding tree limbs (one almost landed on our van), and found a policeman in our drive, a tree on our road, no electricity, and a huge section of our willow tree fallen in our yard. The huge branch smashed a white wooden swing that was hanging from a tree, and damaged a handmade twig bench that was right by the hollyhocks. All of the plants near the bench were fine. Nothing like being without electricity for 5 hours to realize just how blessed we are and how much we take things for granted. 5 hours is really no time at all.

I just found out that some friends still have no electricity! It was actually Wednesday - I mixed up my days.

If hollyhocks are your biggest problem you are blessed indeed! But I know how you feel; I have the same problems with violets, wandering jew, and spider plants.

Wow, Ann, that must have been some storm. Glad all is ok despite the broken bench and tree. Deep red hollyhocks sound just beautiful. I'm in for those.
