Ok-Hubby and I have been seriously looking for property in different states. We have a U.S. map with the states crossed out that we wish not to live in. Hubby keeps sending me links to Kentucky. My problem is that I have been through 1 major tornado while driving through Kansas and that was enough for a lifetime (I was 6mo pregnant, had a 2 year old and was a ball of hormones). People have told me that if you live in the foothills you do not have to worry about tornados-is someone filling me full of Hooey, or is that true? I have to agree that the properties he has sent me are amazing and I truely am interested, but I will not live in a tornado zone. So here I am asking for your input. I thank you girls very much.

Well, I can safely say I love, love, love, Kentucky. We have such variety in this state--from the mountains near the border of Tennesse, to Appalachain foothills, flatlands, bluegrass region, gosh--It's endless.
I'm in the northern part of the state and honestly, I can't ever recall a tornado here. We've had wind gusts that do some damage, but being in the Ohio River Valley, it seems to avoid us. Now, that's not to say that the tri state area doesn't see some...usually there's a storm path from West of Indianapolis through Switzerland and Dearborn Counties in Indiana that comes right through the Northern part of Cincinnati and out east to Wilmington, Ohio (where, incidentally, the National Weather Service is located)....but we usually just get byproducts of those storms.

Well I do know that parts of the Appalachian Mts have seen their fair share of tornado warnings and such. Usually the storms die out around the Ashland, KY area. A tornado will hit just about anything, whether you are in the hills, the flatlands, or down in the valleys. Jonni could speak better on the Cinci area. I've had experience in Southeast KY and eastern Kentucky area and central KY area.

Oh Lillian, you want to leave Oregon? That's my most favorite place to live. I loved living in PDX in the suburbs. Country was more like it. The rain got to me a bit, but still and all, everything was green and not brown.
Of course, if you do have family living elsewhere I can understand.

Lillian we live in the south central ares,We have had two tornadoes that did property damage years and years ago, but with all the weather changes tornadoes are hitting unheard of places, most of the time this area gets the winds and rain, Most houses have basements or are close to a church with basements, I am not afraid here, I will tell you property is more reasonable here than anywhere in the state, I have a good house that I am getting ready to rent you are welcome to try it and see if you like it here, We have been here 40 years and expect to live here for the rest of our lives. I would not want to live in an area where tornadoes are abundant either. Give us a try you will love Ky and we will all love you Miss Wilma

Lillian, I don't think there is any state that is exempt from tornadoes. After stating that, Western Kentucky (Kentucky/Barkley Lake area) is beautiful and the weather is relatively mild year round. I have lived in Central and Western KY. Both areas are beautiful and have so much to offer. You can't go wrong by moving to KY in my opinion.

Thanks for the offer Miss Wilma but it will be about 2 years before we move, but we are planners and want to know where we are going.
You girls are so wonderful thanks for all of the info, I will let the hubby know that I am will to consider it after hearing from you girls.

hey gurlfren .. not long after i moved here (5 years ago) .. we had a tornado come through .. i don't think it was a HUGE one .. but i had a cabin full of gurlfrenz spending the night down in our little valley. all electricity went out .. no lights and NO tv or radio to get any weather 'reports' .. the wind was a-whippin' and howling ... but we all just laughed and giggled the night through with candlelight! next morning .. my neighbors at the 'top of the hill' told me they lost 40-some trees as it ripped right through their property. i swear .. hardly a 'leaf' fell off a tree down here. kentucky has much to offer and i have a friend who always gets FABULOUS homes and property to sell .. sooo .. when you are ready .. jus' let me know .. and i'll put you in touch with him!
jobs are not abundant in this area .. but prices are VERY reasonable .. especially when compared to other parts of the United States! if you will be 'retiring' here with a little jingle in your pocket .. you will find it amazingly inexpensive. be sure to let us know if and when you decide on KENTUCKY!
p.s. this 'ole cabin has stood here for going on 150 years .. and the wind hasn't knocked it down yet!

I live in the Somerset area, we have some really windy storms and a lot of warnings but nothing terrible. I live at the highest point. My house has been there for 50yrs and no problems. We did get struck by lightnig a few years ago hit the tree right in front of the window I was looking out(about 10 feet away). That was a little scary. But it is really beautiful here.
